An experimental determination has been made of the eddy current effects on the nuclear magnetic resonance lineshapes of Al²⁷ wires. Eddy currents in the metal result from the applied radio frequency (r-f) field used to obtain resonance. Due to the induced eddy currents, this r-f magnetic field is attenuated and its phase is shifted as it progresses toward the center of the sample. A quantity defined as the skin depth is a measure of this attenuation. However, disarticulated parts such as otoliths and conodonts cannot be effectively used unless they can be recognized. Otoliths, although somewhat unrecognized in the geological record, are far more abundant than articulated skeletons (Frizzell, 1965, p. 86). Therefore, much investigation is being conducted to reveal the origin, function, morphology, and usefulness of the otoliths of fishes.

Consideration of the relationship between the magnetic field produced by a magnetic shell and that produced by a current loop requires the evaluation of the line integral ɸH̅ • dl̅, where a portion of the path must cross the dipole layer. The correct line integral to be evaluated must be ɸB̅ • dl̅. The evaluation of this integral leads immediately to the correct Maxwell equation in ∆ x H̅. Gaussian units are used.

In recent years, interest in an enzyme which catalyzes the oxidation of a variety of aldehydes and purines has been growing steadily. In fact, this enzyme commonly known as xanthine oxidase, has been implicated by some (1) in the regulation of nucleic acid synthesis and cellular growth - an important consideration in the study of caner. Unfortunately, detailed investigations directly pertaining to biological aspects of this enzyme have as yet been somewhat limited. Nevertheless, the amount of information concerning the nature of the enzyme and its catalytic effects upon different classes of substrates, through far from complete, is indeed significant.

Addition compounds of the monosubstituted derivative of sulfur tetrafluoride, trifluormethlysulfur trifluoride with the Lewis acids PF₅, BF_3, AsF₅, and SbF₅ were prepared, isolated and characterized. On the basis of their infrared spectra, it is suggested that these new compounds can be classified as types of fluoronium adducts and that their ionic formulation can be expressed as CF₃SF₂⁺MF^-_n+1 where MF_n represents the acceptor used. Upon oxidative hydrolysis of trifluoromethylsulfur trifluoride, trifluormethlsulfonic acid was prepared. This paper deals with a survey of soil cadmium concentrations in Kittitas County, Washington, using atomic absorption spectrophotometry as the analytical method. The purpose of the survey was to establish, in an area relatively free from cadmium contamination, background levels for a wide variety of soil conditions. The results showed cadmium concentrations ranging from amounts below the detection limit in remote areas to 2.58ppm in cultivated, inhabited areas, with an overall average concentration of 0.12 ppm cadmium

This thesis derives a confidence interval for the external component of variance o²_a with a prescribed lower bound on the confidence coefficient. This method is compared with various approximations and with Williams' procedure [12], the only other bounded approximation. This thesis presents varieties of information regarding teaching science in elementary school classrooms in the State of Washington. Included are Washington State Laws, National Fire Codes, general rules, and an annotated list of materials and equipment. This list was developed from items suggested in six elementary science programs. Each item was judged for safety either by scientists or by judgements found in the literature.

Recommendations included use of this material by schools, colleges, and textbook companies. Additional research was urged.

The preparation and characterization of select cyclic ethynyl carbinols is presented as a preliminary step for a more detailed investigation of the Rupe rearrangement. The objective of the research work was to attempt to predict abnormal chemical behavior from spectral characteristics of each of the cyclic ethynyl carbinols. Preparation of the starting carbinols was accomplished by a modified Grignard synthesis. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy were used for characterization of each new carbinol prepared. The spectral data available from the characterization work were then used to establish a correlation between ring size and appropriate absorption maxima. …
