Small Mammal Census And Control On A Hardwood Plantation, Andrew Radvanyi Mar 1974

Small Mammal Census And Control On A Hardwood Plantation, Andrew Radvanyi

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

For centuries, Man has been at conflict with and has suffered untold crop losses to ubiquitous small mammals. Such losses may range from unnoticed removal of vegetation in hay and grain fields to 95-99 percent losses in unprotected orchards or forest plantations. A most dramatic and conspicuous type of damage occurs where large numbers of meadow voles cause excessive tree girdling damage to a wide variety of plantation grown trees.

Surveys of small mammal populations carried out on a hardwood plantation in southern Ontario during 1971-72-73 indicated the magnitude of the rodent problem. Control measures using broadcasting of anticoagulant-treated grain …

Animal Damage Control Research–"Are Present Priorities Based On Actual Need?", Richard N. Smith

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

Priorities regarding Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife vertebrate damage control research are in most cases based on actual need. Need is influenced by economic, political, legislative, and biological incentives. These incentives affect private industry, state and local governments, academia, and the federal government but in different ways. The Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife has 24 percent of its wildlife research budget invested in vertebrate damage control research. Its programs deal with predators, birds, and small mammals and research programs are problem oriented. Priorities are generally developed within the organization and are usually determined by biological need.

A Safe Approach To Natural Home Ranges, As Applied To The Solution Of Edge Effect Subjects, Using Capture-Recapture Data In Vole Populations, Ryo Tanaka Mar 1974

A Safe Approach To Natural Home Ranges, As Applied To The Solution Of Edge Effect Subjects, Using Capture-Recapture Data In Vole Populations, Ryo Tanaka

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

Capture-recapture work was performed in 1970 and 1971 with Microtus montebelli seeking to disclose the edge effect subjects. For the purpose, in principle, it is needful for us to approach the reality of home range in size and shape. As the result of these studies, it has been established that the method using observed range length and width is highly available for searching after natural ranges and that the natural range of the voles (Microtus and Clethrionomys) is ordinarily on the order of 0.05 for females and of 0.10 for males in acres and generally oblong in shape such as …

Weight Distributions Of Some Classes Of Binary Cyclic Codes, Carlos R.P. Hartmann, J. R. Riek Jr., Ralph J. Longobardi

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

Let h1(x)h2(x) be the parity check polynomial of a binary cyclic code. This article presents a formula for decomposing words in the code as sums of multiples of words in the codes whose parity check polynomials are h1(x) and h2(x). This decomposition provides information about the weight distribution of the code.

Seasonal Changes In Water Quality And Primary Productivity In Doe Valley Lake, Edmond J. Bacon, Stuart E. Neff Mar 1974

Seasonal Changes In Water Quality And Primary Productivity In Doe Valley Lake, Edmond J. Bacon, Stuart E. Neff

KWRRI Research Reports

Primary productivity and water quality were studied in Doe Valley Lake, a 147-hectare impoundment on Doe Run, a spring-fed stream in Meade County, Kentucky, from 13 June 1969 to 31 July 1972. Doe Valley Lake is monomictic during most winter seasons, but it is dimictic during more severe winters because of its morphometry and location on the borderline climatic region for dimictic lakes (37° N latitude). Oxygen depletion in the hypolimnion is severe, and anaerobic conditions usually prevail by late June. A hypolimnetic areal deficit of 0.038 mg/cm2/day was calculated. Supersaturation of oxygen in the epilimnion was common, …

Development Of Prediction Relationships For Water Requirements With Irrigation Cooling, Billy J. Barfield, John N. Walker, F. A. Payne Feb 1974

Development Of Prediction Relationships For Water Requirements With Irrigation Cooling, Billy J. Barfield, John N. Walker, F. A. Payne

KWRRI Research Reports

A model for predicting leaf temperatures during an off-on mist cycle is presented. The model uses a combination of energy budget and aerodynamic techniques. The model was tested for dry leaf temperature and evapotranspiration predictions using average hourly data from Arizona. The accuracy was good. It was also tested for dry leaf temperature predictions using two to three minute data with a widely varying net radiation. When reasonable values of stomatal resistance were used, the agreement was again good.

The model was tested for prediction of wet leaf temperature prediction with a ten minute on, fifty minute off mist irrigation …

Eikonal Approximation Applied To Atom-Atom Excitation At Intermediate Energies: Excitation Of H By H, Richard H. Shields, Jerry Peacher Feb 1974

Eikonal Approximation Applied To Atom-Atom Excitation At Intermediate Energies: Excitation Of H By H, Richard H. Shields, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The eikonal distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) developed recently by Chen, Joachain, and Watson is applied to atom-atom excitation in the intermediate energy range. In this paper the excitation of a hydrogen atom to the 2s, 2p±, or 2p0 state by hydrogen impact is considered. Differential cross sections are presented. Total cross sections are presented and compared to previous calculations. It is shown that the eikonal DWBA results for the total cross section approach the two-state distortion-approximation results in the limit of high energy and very-small-angle scattering.

Pb And Bi L-Subshell Ionization Cross-Section Ratios Versus Proton Bombarding Energy From 0.5 To 4 Mev, Don H. Madison, A. B. Baskin, C. E. Busch, Stephen M. Shafroth

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experimental ratios of L-subshell cross sections are given for ionization of lead and bismuth by 0.5-4-MeV-proton bombardment. The ratio of the LII to LI cross sections exhibits a maximum near 1.75 MeV. Individual subshell cross sections are obtained from the experimental ratios and previous total-cross-section data. These subshell ratios and cross sections are compared with the theoretical predictions of the plane-wave Born approximation using nonrelativistic hydrogenic wave functions, of the binary-encounter approximation scaled from Mg K-shell cross sections, and of the binary-encounter approximation scaled from cross sections obtained using L-shell velocity distributions. It was found that both approximations …

Diffusion-Controlled Intrachain Reactions Of Polymers. I Theory, Gerald Wilemski, Marshall Fixman Feb 1974

Diffusion-Controlled Intrachain Reactions Of Polymers. I Theory, Gerald Wilemski, Marshall Fixman

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A theory of diffusion-controlled intramolecularly catalyzed reactions of polymer chains in dilute solution is formulated. A closure approximation yields a soluble integral equation for (essentially) the transient rate of the reaction. The time dependent solution consists of a sum of simple exponential terms whose coefficients and decay constants can be readily calculated. The theory is also applied to luminescence quenching and ring-chain interconversion.

Diffusion-Controlled Intrachain Reactions Of Polymers. Ii Results For A Pair Of Terminal Reactive Groups, Gerald Wilemski, Marshall Fixman Feb 1974

Diffusion-Controlled Intrachain Reactions Of Polymers. Ii Results For A Pair Of Terminal Reactive Groups, Gerald Wilemski, Marshall Fixman

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The formulas and results of the preceding paper are used to calculate the rate of reaction between reactive groups attached to the ends of a polymer chain. Extensive numerical calculations have been made for both transient rate processes and steady state luminescence quenching. The results are restricted to chains in dilute solution, in either the free draining or nondraining limits and with no excluded volume forces present. A discussion of the qualitative effects of excluded volume forces on the results is included. The results suggest that experimental studies of these processes may be feasible.

Biochrome Analysis As A Method For Assessing Phytoplankton Dynamics Phase I, Richard L. Meyer Jan 1974

Biochrome Analysis As A Method For Assessing Phytoplankton Dynamics Phase I, Richard L. Meyer

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Selected chemical, physical and biological parameters were determined for a man-made lake, Beaver Lake, on the White River of Arkansas and Missouri. The research program determined the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the temporal and spatial distribution of the algal subcommunities. It was determined that the epipelic, epilithic, epizooic and metaphytic subcommunities had little influence on the euplanktonic subcommunity. The relationship between the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the biochromes chlorophyll-a, -b, and -c and the phytoplankton species clustered into biochrome sets is discussed. The temporal and spatial distributional patterns of temperature, oxygen, ammonia-N, nitrate-N, ortho phosphate-P and silicates are …

Effects Of Mosquito Control Chemicals On Aquatic Fauna, J. L. Lancaster Jr., M. V. Meisch Jan 1974

Effects Of Mosquito Control Chemicals On Aquatic Fauna, J. L. Lancaster Jr., M. V. Meisch

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

No mosquito abatement districts have ever been organized in Arkansas. Mosquito control efforts have been largely adulticiding operations by either aerial application or ground thermal fogging machines. Practically no chemical applications have been directed at the larval stage in residual water in ditches and depressions from which adult populations arise. Some larviciding with ethyl parathion has been done in ricefields. Although the treatment is very effective in mosquito reduction, voluntary treatment has not been completely successful. Because relatively little insecticide has been used as a larvicide in Arkansas, it was possible to evaluate the effect of recommended larvicides on non-target …

Reduced Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Dehydrogenase, Piericidin Sensitivity, And Site 1 Phosphorylation In Different Growth Phases Of Candida Utilis, S. Grossman, John G. Cobley, T. P. Singer, H. Beinert Jan 1974

Reduced Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Dehydrogenase, Piericidin Sensitivity, And Site 1 Phosphorylation In Different Growth Phases Of Candida Utilis, S. Grossman, John G. Cobley, T. P. Singer, H. Beinert

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Reports in the literature indicate that during the exponential phase of growth of Candida utilis NADH oxidation is insensitive to rotenone, that rotenone sensitivity is acquired during the transition to the late stationary phase and is again lost on catabolite repression. The acquisition and loss of rotenone sensitivity appears to be accompanied by similar changes in Site 1 phosphorylation but does not appear to be reflected in the rate of oxidation of NADH (by mitochondria) or of NAD-linked substrates (by mitochondria or whole cells). In the present paper evidence is presented that these fluctuations in sensitivity to inhibitors of NADH …

The Recognition, Investigation, Interpretation, And Treatment Of Landslides In The Pacific Northwest, Harry Ludowise Jan 1974

The Recognition, Investigation, Interpretation, And Treatment Of Landslides In The Pacific Northwest, Harry Ludowise

Dissertations and Theses

Certain features unique to the Pacific Northwest influence landsliding in this region. Weakly consolidated sediments, dense vegetation and seasonally concentrated rainfall all contribute to the distinctive conditions that are encountered here.

This study gathers together information applying to the recognition and correction of Pacific Northwest landslides. Treatment practices common to this region are discussed.

A large slide located about 30 miles east of Portland, Oregon along the Clackamas River is used as an example. Exploration, instrumentation, analysis and corrective measures are illustrated.

Incoherent Scatter Radar Observations Of Westward Electric Fields And Plasma Densities In The Auroral Ionosphere, 1, M P. Banks, C L. Rino, Vincent B. Wickwar

All Physics Faculty Publications

This paper reports the results of incoherent scatter radar observations of high-altitude ion drifts and other plasma parameters made February 24, 1972, at Chatanika, Alaska (L = 5.7), during a period of magnetic disturbance. For this experiment, conducted between 0909 to 1303 UT (2309 to 0303 AST), the radar line of sight was held fixed in the magnetic meridian plane so that the observed north-south ion drifts could be interpreted in terms of a westward electric field that ranged in magnitude from −10 to +35 mV m−1. The results confirm many effects found previously through other experimental …
