An Integrated Framework For Last-Mile Delivery Optimization Using Reinforcement Learning And Social Media-Based Traffic Prediction In Underdeveloped Megacities, Vasanth Bhat Jan 2026

An Integrated Framework For Last-Mile Delivery Optimization Using Reinforcement Learning And Social Media-Based Traffic Prediction In Underdeveloped Megacities, Vasanth Bhat

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Supply chain management has become increasingly critical as transportation costs rise and urban delivery systems place additional pressure on already congested networks. Last-mile delivery—the movement of goods from distribution centers to end users—represents the most expensive and operationally complex segment of the logistics process, particularly in underdeveloped megacities characterized by unpredictable traffic, limited infrastructure, and sparse real-time data. This dissertation proposes an integrated framework for optimizing last-mile delivery in such environments by combining social media–based traffic intelligence, machine learning, and deep reinforcement learning. The framework leverages unstructured, real-time data from social media platforms to enhance traffic prediction and incorporates these …

Detection And Discrimination Of Targets In Infrared Imagery, Adam T. Cuellar Jan 2026

Detection And Discrimination Of Targets In Infrared Imagery, Adam T. Cuellar

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Automated infrared (IR) imagery analysis is essential for persistent surveillance, defense, and security, yet it remains difficult when sensors move and when unknown objects appear. This dissertation addresses two fundamental problems: (1) detecting small moving targets amid platform-motion induced parallax and (2) distinguishing between known stationary targets and out-of-distribution (OOD) objects.   For detecting moving targets while the platform itself is in motion, auxiliary Global Positioning System and Inertial Navigation System data are combined with image analysis. Direction Cosine Matrices from calibrated inertial measurements enable sub-pixel frame alignment unattainable with purely image-based registration. The stabilized sequence is processed by a Reed–Xiaoli …

Repeatability And Reproducibility Of Likelihood Ratio Estimation For Forensics Using Machine Learning: An Application To In-Silico Fire Debris Data, Cameron Ezazi Jan 2026

Repeatability And Reproducibility Of Likelihood Ratio Estimation For Forensics Using Machine Learning: An Application To In-Silico Fire Debris Data, Cameron Ezazi

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

The importance of using statistical evidence to help inform the interpretation of forensic evidence has grown greater over time. This is especially evident in the field of forensic fire debris analysis, where the reliability and reproducibility of statistical results are crucial. This thesis investigates how the application of 5 different common machine learning methods on an in-silico fire debris dataset can be reduced to a univariate forensic score to create score-based likelihood ratios (SLRs), and how these ratios should be interpreted. These SLRs are crucial in supporting or rejecting a Prosecutor’s or Defense’s hypothesis, thus making the previously mentioned reliability …

High-Efficiency And Compact Virtual Reality Displays, Zhenyi Luo Jan 2026

High-Efficiency And Compact Virtual Reality Displays, Zhenyi Luo

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies are revolutionizing the way humans interact with digital information. However, current near-eye display systems still face critical challenges regarding optical efficiency, image quality, and device weight. This dissertation focuses on addressing these limitations through innovative liquid-crystal (LC) optics and system-level design strategies to achieve high-efficiency and compact VR displays.

First, to solve the longstanding problem of severe chromatic aberrations in ultrathin LC optics, I proposed an achromatic diffractive LC device. By stacking three LC layers with specifically designed spectral responses and polarization selectivity, I successfully reduced the chromatic aberrations. This idea enables …

Calculus In Context: The Five College Calculus Project, James Callahan, Kenneth Hoffman, David Cox, Donal O'Shea, Harriet Pollatsek, Lester Senechal

Open Educational Resources: Textbooks

Calculus in Context: The Five College Calculus Project is a thorough reframing of what it means to learn calculus. It starts with a “clean slate;” there is no presumptive commitment to any aspect of the traditional course. Instead, the curriculum is guided by the following principles:

  • Calculus is fundamentally a way of dealing with functional relationships that occur in scientific and mathematical contexts. The techniques of calculus must be subordinate to an overall view of the underlying questions.
  • Technology radically enlarges the range of questions we can explore and the ways we can answer them. Computers can be engaged as …

Physics-Informed Temperature Prediction Of Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Decomposition-Enhanced Lstm And Bilstm Models, Seyed Saeed Madani, Yasmin Shabeer, Michael Fowler, Satyam Panchal, Carlos Ziebert, Hicham Chaoui, François Allard Jan 2026

Physics-Informed Temperature Prediction Of Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Decomposition-Enhanced Lstm And Bilstm Models, Seyed Saeed Madani, Yasmin Shabeer, Michael Fowler, Satyam Panchal, Carlos Ziebert, Hicham Chaoui, François Allard

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Accurately forecasting the operating temperature of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is essential for preventing thermal runaway, extending service life, and ensuring the safe operation of electric vehicles and stationary energy-storage systems. This work introduces a unified, physics-informed, and data-driven temperature-prediction framework that integrates mathematically governed preprocessing, electrothermal decomposition, and sequential deep learning architectures. The methodology systematically applies the governing relations to convert raw temperature measurements into trend, seasonal, and residual components, thereby isolating long-term thermal accumulation, reversible entropy-driven oscillations, and irreversible resistive heating. These physically interpretable signatures serve as structured inputs to machine learning and deep learning models trained on temporally …

Markov Chain Wave Generative Adversarial Network For Bee Bioacoustic Signal Synthesis, Kumudu Samarappuli, Iman Ardekani, Mahsa Mohaghegh, Abdolhossein Sarrafzadeh

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a framework for synthesizing bee bioacoustic signals associated with hive events. While existing approaches like WaveGAN have shown promise in audio generation, they often fail to preserve the subtle temporal and spectral features of bioacoustic signals critical for event-specific classification. The proposed method, MCWaveGAN, extends WaveGAN with a Markov Chain refinement stage, producing synthetic signals that more closely match the distribution of real bioacoustic data. Experimental results show that this method captures signal characteristics more effectively than WaveGAN alone. Furthermore, when integrated into a classifier, synthesized signals improved hive status prediction accuracy. These results highlight the potential …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This research addresses cyber risk by defending against backdoor attacks on Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). We propose the Explainable Complex System-Mitigation Triangular (ECSMT) Framework, which integrates Robust Training, Graph Regularization, and Data Sanitization into a lightweight, hardware-efficient defense layer. To evaluate structural generalizability, we conducted empirical evaluations across three distinct benchmark domains (AIDS, MUTAG, and PROTEINS) using a Graph Isomorphism Network (GIN) backbone. Under a baseline 5% backdoor subgraph trigger injection ratio, ECSMT achieves excellent utility retention, securing a Clean Accuracy (CA) of 97.33% (±0.62%) while reducing the Attack Success Rate (ASR) from 97.00% down to 69.45% on the primary …

Generative Ai-Driven Optimization In Flexible And Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems, Salah Hammedi, Hicham Chaoui, Lotfi Nabli

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Flexible and Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (FRMSs) are essential for coping with variability in modern production environments; however, efficient scheduling and rapid reconfiguration remain challenging. This paper presents a hybrid optimization framework that integrates Colored Petri Net (CPN) modeling with Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to enhance scheduling performance and system adaptability. The CPN formalism ensures verifiable modeling of system dynamics, while a transformer-based generative model produces candidate scheduling and reconfiguration strategies. Simulation experiments were conducted under static, dynamic, and adaptive scenarios, including machine breakdowns and dynamic job arrivals. Performance was evaluated using makespan, mean flow time, machine utilization, and reconfiguration latency. …

Generalized Inverter Fault Detection Using Normalized Current Features And A Lightweight Bilstm Network, Mohammad Zamani Khaneghah, Mohamad Alzayed, Hicham Chaoui

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Fault detection and diagnosis of three-phase inverter-fed motor drives is essential for ensuring system reliability, safety, and continuous operation in applications such as electric vehicles and industrial automation. This paper proposes a data-driven fault detection framework based on normalized current features and a lightweight bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) network which can be generalized to different motor power rating in the same controller system. A compact set of six time-domain features, consisting of the mean and root-mean-square (RMS) values of the phase currents, is extracted and normalized with respect to the average RMS value. This normalization effectively removes dependency on …

Making Unsafe Sequences Unexecutable: Formal Protocol Enforcement For Cyber-Physical Systems, Arthur Amorim Jan 2026

Making Unsafe Sequences Unexecutable: Formal Protocol Enforcement For Cyber-Physical Systems, Arthur Amorim

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Cyber-physical systems execute physical actions in response to software commands, making their communication protocols a primary attack surface. A stealthy attack is a sequence of individually valid messages that violates a required ordering, driving the system into an unsafe state without malware or protocol violation. Existing defenses examine messages or physical state in isolation, not protocol level sequences, and cannot prevent them. Preventing them requires enforcement that makes unsafe sequences unexecutable at the communication boundary.

Formal methods offer a principled path to enforcement, but no tool spans specification to safe deployed hardware. Model checking automates proofs but has no certified …

Non-Gaussian Phenomena In Light Scattering And Applications, Shubham Atul Dawda Jan 2026

Non-Gaussian Phenomena In Light Scattering And Applications, Shubham Atul Dawda

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Physical reality is rarely deterministic; which, when probed by electromagnetic fields that also fluctuate, leads to observables that are most efficiently modelled as statistical processes. At equilibrium, this is usually achieved by invoking the Gaussian statistics of underlying physical processes, however, in practice, one often encounters out-of-equilibrium conditions where Gaussian descriptions may not suffice. Such situations are plentiful in nature– from biology to astronomy. This dissertation addresses several non-Gaussian phenomena associated with light scattering, and includes specific models’ derivations, experimental techniques developments, and demonstrations of potential applications. The systematic presentation will consider circumstances that infringe upon specific assumptions of the …

The Nature And Origin Of The Strodes Creek Member Of The Lexington Limestone, Central Kentucky, Claire J. Mendenhall Jan 2026

The Nature And Origin Of The Strodes Creek Member Of The Lexington Limestone, Central Kentucky, Claire J. Mendenhall

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The Strodes Creek Member of the Lexington Limestone is a small, unusual member that is largely known for its beds of fragmented and overturned stromatoporoids. The Strodes Creek Member occurs as two distinct stratigraphic bodies, wholly encompassed by the Millersburg Member, which represents a shallow, open-marine, mixed-clastic-carbonate platform, characterized by thin-bedded to nodular, fossiliferous calcarenites and calcirudites interbedded with shale. In contrast to the Millersburg, the Strodes Creek exhibits a lithologic background of dark, organic-rich, calcareous shales with a westward-thickening section of very irregularly bedded, stromatoporoid-rich, fossiliferous calcisiltites (packstones and wackestones). The calcisiltites are commonly associated with hummocky crossbedding, pinch-and-swell …

Study Of Fire Regimes In Southwestern Australia Using Geospatial Techniques, Ana Do Carmo Carvalho

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The Northern Jarrah Forest in Southwestern Australia (SWA), part of a global biodiversity hotspot, is home to fire-sensitive tree species such as marri (Corymbia calophylla) and jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata). As climate change intensifies drought and extreme fire events, understanding the drivers of fire severity is increasingly critical. This thesis analyses fire regimes within the Mundaring drinking water catchment to better understand the spatiotemporal complexity of fire severity in relation to fire history and environmental factors.

The thesis commences with a review of three Fire History Databases (FHDs) used in SWA, highlighting significant inconsistencies and data gaps across time and space. …

Development Of Virtual Reality Learning Environments In Science To Engage Secondary Students In Hazardous Activities, Luke Spartalis

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research examines the need for change in including hazardous activities in education. As different learning technologies develop, platforms that retain authentic outcomes via virtual reality are needed. The main objective of this research is to examine the inclusion of Virtual Reality Learning Environments (VRLEs) to determine their value in areas that include hazardous conditions. The research considered the ways that VR tools could be optimised to support these activities, as well as considering the challenges of VRLE implementation. The study examined whether VRLE’s allowed for authentic experiences to sufficiently drive an acceptance of VR to complement existing teaching and …

An Investigation Into The Mechanisms, Barriers, Degree And Sphere Of Risk Influence In Corporate Security, Nicola Lockhart Jan 2026

An Investigation Into The Mechanisms, Barriers, Degree And Sphere Of Risk Influence In Corporate Security, Nicola Lockhart

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study investigates the sphere of corporate security risk influence within organisations, addressing the conceptual and practical ambiguity surrounding the activity’s capacity to shape organisational decisions, behaviours, and risk priorities. While corporate security’s protective role is widely recognised, its broader organisational risk influence remains under-theorised. The study defines the sphere of risk influence as the range of organisational stakeholders and environments with which the corporate security activity interacts, and within which it may engage, persuade, and mobilise action. This sphere is analytically constituted through the intersection of three dimensions: the mechanisms through which influence is attempted, the barriers that constrain …

Eeg And Imu Gait Signal Processing: A Comparative Assessment Of The "Reza" Exponential Filter And Classic Filters, Reza Pousti, Daniel M. Russell, Derek C. Monroe, Christopher K. Rhea

Rehabilitation Sciences Faculty Publications

Noise degrades both EEG and gait signals, and classical IIR filters (Butterworth, Chebyshev, elliptic) involve trade-offs between passband flatness, ripple, and roll-off. This study compared a novel exponential "Reza" filter with these designs for neural and locomotor data. We analyzed an open-source mobile brain-body imaging dataset with EEG and gait data from 49 healthy adults (EEG: 256-channel, 512 Hz; IMUs: six APDM Opals, 128 Hz). EEG channels were grand-averaged and band-pass filtered at 0.5-50 Hz, while IMU axes were averaged and band-pass filtered at 0.5-5 Hz. The outcomes were signal-to-noise ratio SNR (dB) and band-integrated Welch PSD (EEG:0.5-50 Hz; IMU:0.5-5 …

Guidelines For Standard Basic Notations In Applied Statistics, Abhaya Indrayan, Shivani Saini Ms Jan 2026

Guidelines For Standard Basic Notations In Applied Statistics, Abhaya Indrayan, Shivani Saini Ms

COBRA Preprint Series

Whereas some statistical notations are standard and uniformly used by different workers, many are not. Varying notations lead to confusion among the readers, particularly those engaged with applied statistics material, such as medical professionals. This communication proposes that all basic notations be standardized so that the same notations are consistently used by different authors, in different books, journals, and articles for the benefit of those who are not rigorously trained statisticians. Guidelines for such standard notations are also provided. The lead must be taken by statisticians.

Rehabilitation Sciences Faculty Publications

Smartphone-based sensors may provide a complement to laboratory-based force-plate balance assessment; however, validation studies have not established whether smartphone–force-plate associations and agreement vary across combined manipulations of visual input and support-surface reliability, or which smartphone-derived metrics are most sensitive to sensory challenges. Therefore, this study compared smartphone-derived and force-plate-derived sway metrics during virtual reality-based clinical test of sensory interaction and balance (VR-CTSIB) conditions. This secondary analysis included 40 adults (20 with chronic ankle instability and 20 healthy controls). Participants completed 30 s double-leg stance trials under six VR-CTSIB conditions combining firm or foam surfaces with NormVision, DisplayOff, and SwayRef visual …

A Knowledge-Driven, Ai-Assisted Cyber Defence Framework For Iomt Remote Patient Monitoring, Kulsoom S. Bughio, David M. Cook, Abdul M. Unar Jan 2026

A Knowledge-Driven, Ai-Assisted Cyber Defence Framework For Iomt Remote Patient Monitoring, Kulsoom S. Bughio, David M. Cook, Abdul M. Unar

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The rapid adoption of Internet Medical Things (IoMT) technologies in remote patient monitoring has reshaped healthcare delivery by enabling continuous, real-time clinical observation outside traditional care settings. However, this shift has also expanded the cyber-attack surface across heterogeneous, resource-constrained medical devices, wireless networks, cloud services, and third-party platforms. In cyber warfare, healthcare has become an incorporated target of geopolitics, with hospitals, remote monitoring systems, and emergency health systems being used to broaden the attack surface for adversaries to exploit. Existing security approaches for IoMT environments remain largely manual, fragmented, and reactive, limiting their effectiveness in dynamically assessing vulnerabilities and supporting …

Rrto: A High-Performance Transparent Offloading System For Model Inference In Mobile Edge Computing, Zekai Sun, Xiuxian Guan, Zheng Lin, Yuhao Qing, Haoze Song, Zihan Fang, Zhe Chen, Fangming Liu, Heming Cui, Wei Ni, Jun Luo Jan 2026

Rrto: A High-Performance Transparent Offloading System For Model Inference In Mobile Edge Computing, Zekai Sun, Xiuxian Guan, Zheng Lin, Yuhao Qing, Haoze Song, Zihan Fang, Zhe Chen, Fangming Liu, Heming Cui, Wei Ni, Jun Luo

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Deploying Machine Learning (ML) applications on resource-constrained mobile devices remains challenging due to limited computational resources and poor platform compatibility. While Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) offers an offloading-based inference paradigm using GPU servers, existing approaches can be divided into non-transparent and transparent methods, with the former necessitating source-code modifications. Non-transparent offloading achieves high performance but requires intrusive code changes, limiting compatibility with diverse applications. Transparent offloading, in contrast, offers wide compatibility but introduces two challenges: performance degradation under MEC's low and fluctuating bandwidth, where per-operator remote procedure calls (RPCs) inflate end-to-end latency and energy consumption; and black-box logic reconstruction, which …

Psag: Projection-Based Stabilized Attribution Guidance For Online Continual Learning, Hang Yu, Kun Hu, Zhuqiang Lu, Steven Qiang Lu, Zhiyong Wang, Fengxiang He

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Online Continual Learning (OCL) aims to incrementally learn from non-stationary data streams in a one-pass setting, facing the dual challenges of catastrophic forgetting and insufficient training. These challenges intensify the stability-plasticity dilemma, where pre-serving old knowledge conflicts with acquiring new information. In this paper, we propose Projection-based Stabilized Attribution Guidance (PSAG), a modular framework that leverages gradient-based attributions as active guidance signals to selectively preserve task-relevant representations. Our framework consists of three complementary mechanisms: (1) Attribution-Guided Feature Modulation (AGFM) that anchors critical features in the representation space; (2) Importance-Aware Loss Reweighting (IALR) that prioritizes informative samples at the loss level; …

Changepoint Analyses Confirms Global Tropical Cyclone Frequency Decline, Michael Wehner, Thomas Fisher, Norou Diawara, Robert Lund Jan 2026

Changepoint Analyses Confirms Global Tropical Cyclone Frequency Decline, Michael Wehner, Thomas Fisher, Norou Diawara, Robert Lund

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Changes in tropical cyclone frequencies as the climate warms is a topic of significant current debate [1, 2]. There is no accepted theory of how tropical cyclogenesis might respond to a warmer ocean-atmosphere system as multiple controlling factors exist [3–7]. Anthropogenic warming of surface ocean temperatures due to increased greenhouse gas concentrations [8] increases the potential for tropical cyclogenesis [9–11]; however, realized cyclogenesis also requires an initial local disturbance [12–16] to develop. Most multi-decadal tropical cyclone permitting climate models (i.e. resolutions of 15-50km) exhibit frequency decreases in warmer climates, despite the increase in tropical cyclogenesis potential [17–25]. In this paper, …

A Composite Narxnn Approach To Photovoltaic Power Forecasting With Integrated Weather Inputs And Uncertainty Quantification, Denisse Urenda Castañeda, Sharmin Abdullah, Jackson Morgan, Honglun Xu, Michael Pokojovy, Tzu-Liang Tseng Jan 2026

A Composite Narxnn Approach To Photovoltaic Power Forecasting With Integrated Weather Inputs And Uncertainty Quantification, Denisse Urenda Castañeda, Sharmin Abdullah, Jackson Morgan, Honglun Xu, Michael Pokojovy, Tzu-Liang Tseng

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Solar photovoltaics (PV) are a major source of sustainable energy. Yet, their power output is highly sensitive to environmental variability, particularly solar irradiance, cloud cover, wind, and temperature. Accurate forecasting of PV power is essential for efficient grid integration and energy planning, especially in applications requiring reliable longer-term forecasting rather than one-step-ahead predictions. This study presents a PV power forecasting approach using Nonlinear Autoregressive models with Exogenous Inputs (NARX), integrating large-scale numerical weather historical data as exogenous variables. Although NARX models effectively capture temporal dependencies, they can become overly dependent on historical power values, reducing responsiveness to real-time weather changes. …

Weak Enforcement And Low Compliance In Pci Dss: A Comparative Security Study, Soonwon Park, John Hastings Jan 2026

Weak Enforcement And Low Compliance In Pci Dss: A Comparative Security Study, Soonwon Park, John Hastings

Research & Publications

Although credit and debit card data continue to be a prime target for attackers, organizational adherence to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) remains surprisingly low. Despite prior work showing that PCI DSS can reduce card fraud, only 32.4% of organizations were fully compliant in 2022, suggesting possible deficiencies in enforcement mechanisms. This study employs a comparative analysis (qualitative and indicator-based) to examine how enforcement mechanisms relate to implementation success in PCI DSS in relation to HIPAA, NIS2, and GDPR. The analysis reveals that PCI DSS significantly lags far behind these security frameworks and that its sanctions …

Gravity Falls: A Comparative Analysis Of Domain-Generation Algorithm (Dga) Detection Methods For Mobile Device Spearphishing, Adam Dorian Wang, John Hastings Jan 2026

Gravity Falls: A Comparative Analysis Of Domain-Generation Algorithm (Dga) Detection Methods For Mobile Device Spearphishing, Adam Dorian Wang, John Hastings

Research & Publications

Mobile devices are frequent targets of eCrime threat actors through SMS spearphishing (smishing) links that leverage Domain Generation Algorithms (DGA) to rotate hostile infrastructure, avoid individual domain blocks, and bypass perimeter enterprise defenses. Despite this, DGA research and evaluation largely emphasize malware C2 and email phishing datasets, leaving limited evidence on how well detectors generalize to smishing-driven domain tactics outside enterprise perimeters. This work addresses that gap by evaluating traditional and machine-learning DGA detectors against Gravity Falls, a new dataset derived from smishing links delivered between 2022 and 2025. Gravity Falls captures a single threat actor's evolution across four technique …

Research & Publications

AI-powered code generation systems have transformed software development but introduce critical inference-time security vulnerabilities. This research presents a systematic investigation of context-based adversarial attacks, where strategically crafted contextual inputs, including comments, documentation, variable names, bias large language models toward generating exploitable code. Through 2,800 controlled experiments across CodeT5+, CodeLlama, GPT-3.5-Turbo, and GPT-4, we quantify attack effectiveness and defense mechanisms. Results demonstrate that adversarial conditions increase vulnerability generation 11.4x for individual models, with an overall pooled increase of 2.1x (from 16.1% to 34.1%), with direct instruction attacks achieving 88.8% success on GPT-3.5-Turbo. Cross-model transferability reaches 58-100%, indicating systemic architectural vulnerabilities rather …

Bridging The Smart City Cybersecurity Data Gap Through Ai-Driven Synthetic Dataset Generation, Stephanie Polczynski, John Hastings, Varghese Vaidyan, Kyle Korman

Research & Publications

Smart cities rely on interconnected cyber-physical systems that integrate sensors, IoT devices, cloud platforms, and AI-driven services and decision-making. While these systems enhance city services, they also introduce complex cybersecurity challenges due to their large attack surfaces, heterogeneous data flows, and evolving threat vectors. Developing and validating cybersecurity tools for smart cities requires high-quality datasets that accurately represent real operational conditions. However, real-world datasets are often incomplete, contain privacy-sensitive data, are difficult to access, or lack sufficient malicious activity to support tool development. This research addresses this critical gap by proposing an AI-based synthetic data generation (SDG) framework designed specifically …
