A New Method For Determining The Rate Of Evaporation And The Relative Humidity, Willliam T. Shaw Apr 1932

A New Method For Determining The Rate Of Evaporation And The Relative Humidity, Willliam T. Shaw

Bachelors’ Theses

The presence of water vapor in the air is of the greatest importance to organic life. Animal and vegetable life is entirely dependent on water which very largely reaches the the earth through precipitation of water vapor held in the atmosphere. Not only does the water vapor in the air supply organic life with the life-giving fluid, but it also significantly modifies the climatic conditions of any region. Even in temperate climates such as in southern Australia, the air is often so dry that ordinary wooden furniture and articles of wood cannot be used because the air in this condition …

Radio And A Public Address System For The High School, Kenneth H. Westlake

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

All the findings and knowledge of electricity and magnetism are not new; even the Greeks as far back as 600 B. C. knew something about these forces. As time went on the facts increased.

After the experiments of Faraday, Maxwell, Hertz and such men as these, electricity and magnetism became a vital part of human life and endeavor. Within the last twenty-five years the advances in electricity have been very rapid. The action of the electric current is a vital part of many developments and is helping to make human life more enjoyable and interesting.

Almost all schools today are …

The Effect Of Alternating Current On The Rectifying Properties Of Metallic Salts In Contact With Metals, William Howard Schumaker Jun 1931

The Effect Of Alternating Current On The Rectifying Properties Of Metallic Salts In Contact With Metals, William Howard Schumaker

Bachelors’ Theses

However much may be said regarding the advantages of direct current, there is little doubt at present, that from the viewpoint of power generation and transmission, alternating current has considerable advantages over direct current. While such is the case, there is, and probably always will be, a need for direct current. According to our present development, this direct current is indispensable in wireless work, radio, and in the laboratory test shops, where it is necessary to work with very sensitive meters, which are inexpensive and easy enough to secure for direct current measurements, but which necessitates an elaborate and costly …

Probability, The Historical Development Of The Theory And Its Application To Games Of Chance, Rose M. Brandt May 1931

Probability, The Historical Development Of The Theory And Its Application To Games Of Chance, Rose M. Brandt

Bachelors’ Theses

The theory of probability had its origin in isolated mathematical problems taken from games of chance. The beginnings of many of our modern theories and concepts can be traced back to Chinese origin. So too can the theory of probability. With the exception of the Chinese problem, dating from the beginning of the Christian era, no reference seems to have again been made to the theory prior to the latter part of the fifteenth century. In 1494 an Italian monk, Pacioli, was one of the first to introduce the "Problem of Points" into a treatise on mathematics. By the solution …

Revision Of The Jefferson City Formation In The Rolla Quadrangle, James Shelley Cullison Jan 1930

Revision Of The Jefferson City Formation In The Rolla Quadrangle, James Shelley Cullison

Masters Theses

"The geology of the Rolla quadrangle was mapped by Lee in 1912. At that time all the dolomitic strata above the Roubidoux and beneath the Carboniferous formations in this area were placed in the Jefferson City. A more detailed study of the stratigraphy of the whole Ozark region by Ulrich has shown that some of the strata which had been included in the Jefferson City formation on lithologic grounds are not equivalent to the dolomites in the type section at Jefferson City, Missouri"--Introduction, page [1].

A Study Of The Official Methods Of Analysis For Determining The Availability Of Nitrogen In Fertilizers, Raymond A. Schmidt Apr 1929

A Study Of The Official Methods Of Analysis For Determining The Availability Of Nitrogen In Fertilizers, Raymond A. Schmidt

Bachelors’ Theses

The Milwaukee Sewage Disposal Plant is unique in that it has successfully met the engineering and chemical problems encountered in putting the theories and ideas of the simple experimental station into operation on a large scale. Municipal sanitation was the aim of the plant. It has accomplished its purpose and has been operating several years with a high degree of efficiency and low per capita cost. The plant will be called upon to take care of the sanitary needs of Milwaukee for many years to come.

"Triassic-Jurassic 'Red Beds' Of The Rocky Mountain Region": A Discussion, John B. Reeside Jr. Jan 1929

"Triassic-Jurassic 'Red Beds' Of The Rocky Mountain Region": A Discussion, John B. Reeside Jr.

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The conclusion drawn by Professor E. B. Branson in a recent paper on the "Red Beds" of the Rocky Mountain region that parts of these beds are marine is considered likely. The conclusion that there exists no basis for subdivision of the beds is not accepted, and a division of the Mesozoic part into Lower Triassic, Upper Triassic, and Jurassic units is advocated. The conclusion that no eolian deposits are present likewise is not accepted, and the interpretation of important parts of the Jurassic unit as eolian is advocated. Disagreement is expressed with much of Professor Branson's correlation table, and …

The Aurora Borealis, Magdalen Kramschuster Jun 1928

The Aurora Borealis, Magdalen Kramschuster

Bachelors’ Theses

The Indians wondered if their beloved aurora would return. They watched and philosophized about the dawn, the twilight, the stars and all the phenomena of the heavens. They pondered the mysteries of lightening and thunder. Peoples down through the ages have written poetry about the mighty thunderhead and the lacy cirrus clouds. One by one these mysteries have been solved, but one still remains--the Aurora Polaris. Advances have been made in scientific fields so that we no longer worry whether or not the next day will come. Thunder, to us, is not the voice of an angry god. Rapid strides …

A Theorem On Semi-Continuous Functions, Henry Blumberg Jan 1918

A Theorem On Semi-Continuous Functions, Henry Blumberg

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Recently G. C. Young and A. Denjoy have communicated theorems—those in Denjoy's memoir are of an especially comprehensive character—dealing, in particular, with point sets where the four derivatives of a given continuous function are identical. It is the purpose of this note to treat an analogous problem that arises when "derivative" is replaced by "saltus." However, instead of confining ourselves to "saltus," we prove a more general theorem that applies essentially to all semi-continuous functions. We preface the proof of this theorem with the following

Nebraska Rocks Which Excite Common Inquiry, Erwin H. Barbour Jan 1915

Nebraska Rocks Which Excite Common Inquiry, Erwin H. Barbour

Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications

This leaflet it intended to serve as an answer to correspondents who make inquiry about the rocks of Nebraska1. Unfortunately for those interested in such matters, the rocks of the State are few in number, and are deeply buried from view by sand and soil, so there are thousands of square miles in which even a pebble is a rarity. That our rocks are level and undisturbed is practically true. Still there are some surprisingly interesting folds and faults.

On The Origin And Definition Of The Geologic Term "Laramie", A. C. Veatch Jan 1907

On The Origin And Definition Of The Geologic Term "Laramie", A. C. Veatch

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

INTRODUCTION

Investigations of the United States Geological Survey during the summer of I906, covering the larger part of the Laramie exposures on the Laramie Plains, examined by the King and Hayden surveys, have revealed many new and important facts bearing on the Laramie problem.

By detailed areal surveys it was found: (1) that the lignitiferous series, which in the Laramie Plains lies between the Montana below and the Fort Union above, and has a maximum thickness of about 12,500 feet, is divided about the middle by an unconformity; (2) that this unconformity is in the same stratigraphic plane and continuous …
