A Mineralogical And Geochemical Study Of The Ferruginous Bauxite Deposits In Columbia County, Oregon, And Wahkiakum County, Washington, Ronald Laverne Jackson

Dissertations and Theses

Wet chemical analysis and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) were performed on a suite of samples from three residual ferruginous bauxite profiles in the study area for abundances of Al2O3,

SiO2, Fe2O3, Ti O2, Na, Sc, Hf, Cr, Co, La, Sm, Yb, Lu, and Th. In addition a mineralogical study accompanied this research, using petrographic, differential thermal, and x-ray diffraction techniques. In each profile, the relative mobility of these elements were calculated by empirical methods for comparison with the parent rock and mineral properties in the saprolite.

The Port Of Boston: Perspective On A Maritime Dilemma, Louis Edward Cellineri Apr 1974

The Port Of Boston: Perspective On A Maritime Dilemma, Louis Edward Cellineri

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Few in Massachusetts, or even in the metropolitan Boston area, however, understand their Port's past, and few still appreciate its present contributions and sympathize with its struggles and problematic future. Whatever its past fame or present indignities, the excitement of a vibrant, profitable waterfront does not enter into the advocacy and implementation of harbor recreational and residential development plans, with or without commercial activities. This near dismissal of the Seaport's present and potential value in certain circles, only presents another dilemma to those attempting to cope with this veritable maritime bag of worms. But despite all these obstacles, the Port …

The Effects Of Dwarf Mistletoe On The Wood Properties Of Lodgepole Pine, Douglas D. Piirto, Donald L. Crews, Harry E. Troxell Apr 1974

The Effects Of Dwarf Mistletoe On The Wood Properties Of Lodgepole Pine, Douglas D. Piirto, Donald L. Crews, Harry E. Troxell

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

The effects of dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium americanum Nutt. ex. Engelm.) on the wood properties of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl.) were studied. The results indicate: a decline in modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, and work to proportional limit in both infected and noninfected wood from the infected trees; a higher specific gravity of the infected wood; a higher percentage of alcohol-benzene extractives in the infected wood; an increase in longitudinal shrinkage in both infected and noninfected wood from the same tree; a lower percentage of latewood in wood from infected trees; no significant difference in growth ring …

Finitely Generated Modules Over Bezout [email protected], Roger Wiegand, Sylvia Wiegand Apr 1974

Finitely Generated Modules Over Bezout [email protected], Roger Wiegand, Sylvia Wiegand

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Let R be a Bezout ring (a commutative ring in which all finitely generated ideals are principal), and let M be a finitely generated R -module. We will study questions of the following sort: (A) If every localization of M can be generated by n elements, can M itself be generated by n elements? (B) If M 0 R m = Rn for some m, n, is Af necessarily free? (C) If every localization of M has an element with zero annihilator, does M itself have such an element? We will answer these and related questions for various familiar classes …

Multiregional Interactions Between Energy And Transportation, Karen R. Polenske Apr 1974

Multiregional Interactions Between Energy And Transportation, Karen R. Polenske

Applications

Because of the number and complexity of the issues that will determine the use of coal by the electric-generating plants, an important asset of policy makers will be the availability of a method of analysis that allows for quick studies of many different combinations of assumptions and policies. The present prototype study is designed to show how the multiregional input-output model can be used to investigate each different assumption and policy alternative. For this paper, the analysis has necessarily been restricted to two issues. First, the results of using regional rather than national technologies in the model are assessed. This …

The Use Of Transactional Analysis With Inquiry Methods In Physics Teaching, Robert Fuller, Ward L. Sims Apr 1974

The Use Of Transactional Analysis With Inquiry Methods In Physics Teaching, Robert Fuller, Ward L. Sims

Robert G. Fuller Publications

We now offer a course that combines an inquiry approach to physics with elementary school science teaching methods and transactional analysis. Our course carries three semester credits in elementary science methods and three semester credits in physics, a total of nine contact hours per week. In previous interim courses the very positive response we have had from our students, i.e., the excitement in discovering some real physics for themselves, and their decision to use the tools of transactional analysis to say "OK" to themselves and physics, leads us to believe that our course can serve as a useful model for …

An Investigation Of Littoral Transport Between Virginia Beach And Sandbridge, Virginia, Richard C. Cunningham Jr. Apr 1974

An Investigation Of Littoral Transport Between Virginia Beach And Sandbridge, Virginia, Richard C. Cunningham Jr.

OES Theses and Dissertations

A method for calculating littoral transport, direct determination of the sediment flux, has been proposed and evaluated. Three sampling stations, located between Virginia Beach and Sandbridge, Virginia, were occupied for a period of thirteen months (September, 1972 to September, 1973). Measurements include velocity of the littoral current, cross-sectional area of the surf zone, and in situ samples of suspended and bottom sediment load. Observations of sea and atmospheric conditions were obtained. Two ways of calculating littoral transport were derived from the same basic method, thus two sets of transport values were generated. Two annual littoral transport values were calculated by …

Testing fee schedules are reviewed in a self-supporting project favorably known round the world.

Pest Management In Relation To Human Health, Allan M. Barnes Mar 1974

Pest Management In Relation To Human Health, Allan M. Barnes

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

Vector-borne disease prevention and control strategies, aside from those associated with domestic rodents, have rarely involved management of vertebrate populations, even though in many cases such management would appear to represent the most effective and economical long-term approach. Prevention of a long list of arthropod transmitted diseases is often at best a stop-gap procedure undertaken only after substantial disease hazard is detected in reservoir populations. More often, control actions await the detection of human cases, at which time short-term emergency control measures may be conducted, usually involving the use of toxicants against arthropod vectors and occasionally vertebrate reservoirs. In some …

A Review Of Rodent Control Programs In New York State, Joe E. Brooks Mar 1974

A Review Of Rodent Control Programs In New York State, Joe E. Brooks

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

The history of rodent control programs in New York State is reviewed, beginning with state-funded efforts in August, 1967. In 1969, Federal rodent control grant funds were used to establish four Model Cities programs. At its peak in 1970, programs were active in 18 counties, eight cities and villages, and in six Model Cities areas. The program encompasses all the major metropolitan areas of the state, serving some nine million persons.

As part of the state program, the Rodent Control Evaluation Laboratory was established to investigate chemosterilants as a means of rodent control and to develop knowledge of pest rodent …

Nesting Success Of Quelea Quelea With One Parent Removed And Observations On Roosting Behavior, With Implications For Control, Jeffrey A. Jackson Mar 1974

Nesting Success Of Quelea Quelea With One Parent Removed And Observations On Roosting Behavior, With Implications For Control, Jeffrey A. Jackson

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

Avicidal sprays are likely to continue to be a major tool in controlling Quelea quelea nesting colonies when they are found in cereal producing areas. New observations on nesting behavior indicate that a single parent cannot successfully care for the nest if the other parent is destroyed before the eggs have hatched. During the incubation period, Quelea return earlier in the evening and males are more concentrated in night roosting areas than after the eggs have hatched. These factors indicate that for the most efficient control, the best time to spray nesting colonies is before hatching begins.

The Relationship Of Quelea Migrations To Cereal Crop Damage In The Lake Chad Basin, Jeffrey J. Jackson Mar 1974

The Relationship Of Quelea Migrations To Cereal Crop Damage In The Lake Chad Basin, Jeffrey J. Jackson

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

Quelea quelea and some other species of weaverbirds (Ploceidae) cause severe damage to cereal crops in sahelian zones of Africa. Recent observations of weaverbird damage to cereals in the Lake Chad Basin show that crops grown in certain places at particular times are more l i k e l y to be damaged than others. Timing of harvest by varying plan tin g times and selection of short-cycle cereals may avoid damage in some situations.

Muskrat Control And Damage Prevention, James E. Miller Mar 1974

Muskrat Control And Damage Prevention, James E. Miller

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

Although the muskrat, Ondatra zibethica, is native throughout most of the United States and has been a mainstay of the fur business, in recent years it has become a serious pest causing extensive damage to some specific crops, as well as to earthen water-holding structures. Damage caused by muskrats to rice crops, food fish, and bait fish reservoirs in Arkansas was estimated in 1967 to be almost $900,000. A control program begun in October, 1967, directed principally at muskrat control, proved a significant aid in reducing damage. This program provided Arkansas farmers and landowners with practical, effective methods and …

Mestranol As A Repellent To Protect Douglas-Fir Seed From Deer Mice, Gerald D. Lindsey, Richard M. Anthony, James Evans Mar 1974

Mestranol As A Repellent To Protect Douglas-Fir Seed From Deer Mice, Gerald D. Lindsey, Richard M. Anthony, James Evans

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

Mestranol** [3-Methoxy-19-nor-l7α-pregna-l,3,5 (10)-trien-20-yn-l7-ol (C21H26O2)] was tested at 2 percent (active) as a repellent for protecting Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) seed from deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). In 5-day laboratory bioassays, deer mice consumed 61 to 66 percent fewer mestranol-treated seeds than control seeds; these results were about equal to those with a standard 0.5 percent (active) endrin seed treatment. Deer mice showed a progressive aversion to the mestranol seed treatment from 24 percent to 76 percent in 5 days. Thereafter, with minimal reinforcement, avoidance was maintained at 90 to 99 percent for …

Rabies Vector Control In Alberta, J.B. Gurba Mar 1974

Rabies Vector Control In Alberta, J.B. Gurba

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

Following the last serious outbreak of rabies in 1952-57, the province of Alberta remained virtually free of the disease for 13 years. In 1970 a sudden increase occurred with 16 cases in various species. The Alberta Central Rabies Control Committee was reactivated to cope with the situation. Pre-immunization of high risk personnel and domestic pets was initiated along with supportive research to monitor infection rates in various species. Vector control programs were established to stop the spread of rabies by known wildlife vectors, particularly skunks (Mephitis mephitis) which had brought rabies across the great plains to the Alberta-Saskatchewan …

Rabbit Behavior Research In Australia And Its Relevance In Control Operations, B.V. Fennessy Mar 1974

Rabbit Behavior Research In Australia And Its Relevance In Control Operations, B.V. Fennessy

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

Research in Australia on the behavior of wild rabbits has provided a basis for improvements in the tactics and strategy of control.

As the warren is a central focus for growth and survival of a population, a program for effective control or eradication should a i m at making the warren unavailable to rabbits.

Enclosure studies of behavior suggested that poisoning would be much more effective when carried out in the non-breeding season. This has been confirmed in field trials.

The behavioral importance of the odor-producing inguinal , submandibular, and anal glands is emphasized. It is suggested that further studies …

The Role Of W.H.O. In The Study And Control Of Rodent-Borne Disease, N.G. Gratz Mar 1974

The Role Of W.H.O. In The Study And Control Of Rodent-Borne Disease, N.G. Gratz

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

While little information is available on the distribution and incidence of most of the diseases with rodent reservoirs, many of them are known to be widespread and may have considerable public health importance in some of the foci in which they are found. The World Health Organization is carrying out investigations on the epidemiology of several diseases with rodent reservoirs and on the biology and ecology of the rodent reservoir species themselves. These investigations are being carried out both at WHO research u n i t s and with collaborating laboratories. Based on the ecological information the organization is attempting …

The Role Of F.A.O. In Vertebrate Pest Problems, H.R. Shuyler Mar 1974

The Role Of F.A.O. In Vertebrate Pest Problems, H.R. Shuyler

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

Since 1947, when FAO began its involvement in vertebrate pest problems, its role has gradually expanded. Through short-term Consultants, Experts, Regional and Headquarters Officers, it advises Member Countries about vertebrate pest control needs and opportunities, fulfills requests for assistance suggesting needed modifications, and guides and reports on assistance rendered. Assistance may involve one or more international specialists for a few weeks up to national and regional projects of several years' duration. In cooperation with WHO it sponsors meetings of specialists, develops rodenticide specifications for international commerce, and has published rodent bibliographies covering 1950 to 1969.

Seasonal Changes In Water Quality And Primary Productivity In Doe Valley Lake, Edmond J. Bacon, Stuart E. Neff Mar 1974

Seasonal Changes In Water Quality And Primary Productivity In Doe Valley Lake, Edmond J. Bacon, Stuart E. Neff

KWRRI Research Reports

Primary productivity and water quality were studied in Doe Valley Lake, a 147-hectare impoundment on Doe Run, a spring-fed stream in Meade County, Kentucky, from 13 June 1969 to 31 July 1972. Doe Valley Lake is monomictic during most winter seasons, but it is dimictic during more severe winters because of its morphometry and location on the borderline climatic region for dimictic lakes (37° N latitude). Oxygen depletion in the hypolimnion is severe, and anaerobic conditions usually prevail by late June. A hypolimnetic areal deficit of 0.038 mg/cm2/day was calculated. Supersaturation of oxygen in the epilimnion was common, …

An Ok Science Teacher, Robert Fuller Mar 1974

An Ok Science Teacher, Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

Many elementary school teachers feel insecure and unsure in their teaching of science, i.e., they have NOT OK feelings about themselves and science. These feelings are based on the teachers' previous science experiences and on their interactions with other persons in science courses. The improvement of elementary school science programs depends upon the teacher's ability to deal effectively with his feelings about science. A complete science education program for an elementary teacher includes three components: (1) science content, (2) science methods that take into consideration the intellectual development of children, and (3) a practical psychology for developing positive human attitudes …

Evidence For The Ωππ Decay Modes Of The A₂ And Ω(1675), J. Diaz, F. A. Dibianca, William J. Fickinger, A. Malko, D. K. Robinson, C. R. Sullivan

Faculty Scholarship

We present evidence for the decay A20→ωπ+π0 with a branching ratio Γ(A2→ωππ)/Γ(A2→ρπ)=0.28±0.09 and for the decay ω(1675)→ωπ+π- with a branching ratio Γ(ω(1975)→ωπ+π-)/Γ(ω(1675)→ρπ)=0.47±0.18. Evidence is given for an intermediate B(1235)π state in the ω(1675) decay.

Pb And Bi L-Subshell Ionization Cross-Section Ratios Versus Proton Bombarding Energy From 0.5 To 4 Mev, Don H. Madison, A. B. Baskin, C. E. Busch, Stephen M. Shafroth Feb 1974

Pb And Bi L-Subshell Ionization Cross-Section Ratios Versus Proton Bombarding Energy From 0.5 To 4 Mev, Don H. Madison, A. B. Baskin, C. E. Busch, Stephen M. Shafroth

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experimental ratios of L-subshell cross sections are given for ionization of lead and bismuth by 0.5-4-MeV-proton bombardment. The ratio of the LII to LI cross sections exhibits a maximum near 1.75 MeV. Individual subshell cross sections are obtained from the experimental ratios and previous total-cross-section data. These subshell ratios and cross sections are compared with the theoretical predictions of the plane-wave Born approximation using nonrelativistic hydrogenic wave functions, of the binary-encounter approximation scaled from Mg K-shell cross sections, and of the binary-encounter approximation scaled from cross sections obtained using L-shell velocity distributions. It was found that both approximations …

Pheasant Management Recommendations, William L. Baxter Feb 1974

Pheasant Management Recommendations, William L. Baxter

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Information on the life history and ecology of the ring-necked pheasant was collected on two, nine-square-mile study areas in Clay County, Nebraska, from 1954 through 1964. The study was designed to provide basic data that would allow scientifically based management decisions to be made for the maintenance and enhancement of ring-neck populations.

Findings indicate certain steps should be taken to improve pheasant populations on state-owned or controlled lands, as well as recommendations to improve habitat for pheasant populations on land not controlled by the Game Commission, These secondary proposals have statewide ramifications and offer potential for significantly improving pheasant populations …

Effect Of Virtual 4d-Shell Excitations On Rare Earth Spectra, Anthony F. Starace Jan 1974

Effect Of Virtual 4d-Shell Excitations On Rare Earth Spectra, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Ab initio energies for electric dipole transitions 4d10 (1S0) → 4d94f J = 1 in triply-ionized lanthanum have been calculated by constructing an effective interaction, acting within the configuration 4d94f, that incorporates effects of virtual 4d-shell excitations to all orders of perturbation. Virtual 4d-shell excitations, included within the random phase approximation, and virtual excitations to singly-excited configurations 4d9εf are found to reduce the ordinary electrostatic interaction by 38% for the 1P1 term of 4d94f, by 6% for the 3D1 term, and by 3% …
