The summer home ranges, food habits, cover preferences, population dynamics, metabolic rates, growth rates, and taxonomic characteristics were determined for porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) in northwestern South Dakota. The summer home ranges were 158.2 ha for adult females, 90.4 ha for juveniles, and 57.9 ha for adult males. The population was 34 percent adult males, 16 percent juvenile males, 34 percent adult females, and 15 percent juvenile females. The preferred daytime cover choice was silver buffaloberry (Shepherdia argentea), followed by snowberry (Symphoricarpos occidentalis), earth dens, forbs, and low brush. Shrubs were the most important item in the diet, then trees, forbs, …
The Electron-Methyl Group Spin-Spin Interaction, Peter A. Beckmann
The Electron-Methyl Group Spin-Spin Interaction, Peter A. Beckmann
Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship
The nuclear spin symmetry conversion transition, whereby a methyl group changes tunnelling state (A↔E) and total nuclear spin (ΔI = ± 1), is made resonant by the flip of an unpaired electron spin (Δms = ± 1). The coupling between an unpaired electron in a free radical and a methyl group in a nearby molecule is via the inter-molecular spin-spin interaction. The matrix elements and transition probabilities for this transition are calculated explicitly. The motivation behind the calculation is to aid in the interpretation of electron spin relaxation experiments in γ-irradiated 4-methyl-2,6-t …

Absolute Doubly Differential Cross Sections For Ejection Of Secondary Electrons From Gases By Electron Impact. I. 100- And 200-Ev Electrons On Helium, M. Eugene Rudd, R. D. Dubois
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
We have measured absolute values of the cross sections for ejection of electrons from helium gas by 100- and 200-eV electrons. These cross sections were measured for emission angles from 10° to 150° and for electron energies from 3 eV to a value equal to the primary energy minus the ionization potential. The measurements were made using a static-gas target and an electrostatic analyzer. The resulting cross sections agree reasonably well with those of Opal, Peterson, and Beaty near 90°, but show the need for an adjustment of their angular distributions. Comparison with Born-approximation calculations of Manson et al. at …

Kinetics Of The Alkaline Tetramer Dimer Dissociation In Liganded Human Hemoglobin: A Laser Light-Scattering Stopped-Flow Study, D. P. Flamig, L. J. Parkhurst
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
The first-order dissociation of tetrameric HbCO to the dimer has been studied over the pH range 10.30-11.57 in a light-scattering stopped-flow apparatus using argon-ion laser excitation. The first-order dissociation rate constant varies from 0.25 sec-1 to 24.0 sec-1 over this pH interval. A semilogarithmic plot of k versus pH has a slope of 2.56 at pH 11.07, the midpoint. The pH dependence of the dissociation of the tetramer is consistent with progressive titration of α1-α2 and β1-β2 salt bridges. At pH 10.66, the dissociation rates of HbO2, HbCO, methemoglobin, and …

"Thirty-three measured sections, nine with thin sections and insoluble residues, were studied to determine the depositional history of the Allan Mountain Limestone and the lower member of the Castle Reef Dolomite of the Madison Group in northwestern Montana.
The Allan Mountain base is a fossiliferous limestone, herein named the Brownback Gulch Member, which thickens and becomes cherty to the southwest where the section at Lone Butte resembles that of the Bridger Range Waulsortian-type reefs. A crinoidal lag deposit marks a dis- conformity at the top. In the overlying silty limestone member a thin black shale (Unit 1) grades into normal …

Doctoral Dissertations
"The dissertation area lies on the western flank of the Ozark uplift between Lebanon and Camdenton, Missouri. In the northwestern corner of the study area a portion of the Decaturville cryptoexplosive structure is exposed. The dominant structure outside the disturbed zone is a northwest-trending asymmetrical anticline with a subsidiary normal fault dipping southwest on the steeper southwest limb.
The area is mapped in considerable detail in order to describe subtle structural features. To overcome a problem of poor exposures, new key beds are defined which greatly increase structural control. Significant structures recognized as a result are the Dry Auglaize anticline, …
Geology Of The Stateline District, Utah-Nevada, Terry Moore Collins
Geology Of The Stateline District, Utah-Nevada, Terry Moore Collins
Masters Theses
"The rocks exposed in the Stateline District, Iron County, Utah and Lincoln County, Nevada, are Tertiary volcanics, which serve as hosts for gold and silver bearing quartz veins. The Miocene rhyolites and dellenites, a possible caldera, cupola-associated rock textures, and the faults and styles of deformations indicate the geologic setting of Stateline is in harmony with the tectonic framework of the southern Great Basin. Four map units, subdivided into nine members, are recognized. X-ray fluorescence analyses for SiO₂, TiO₂, Fe₂O₃, CaO, and K₂O differentiated the map units, while variations in the primary quartz, sanadine, plagioclase, biotite, hornblende, and total crystal …

Theses and Dissertations
Based on lithostratigraphic and geomorphic information, the Quaternary history of an area bounded by the Red River of the North, 95°00' west longitude, 47°00' and 46°45' north latitude in west central Minnesota, includes seven geologic episodes:
Glacial advances and retreats over all or part of the study area occurred during the first six geologic episodes. The glaciers advanced either southward across northern Minnesota, entering the study area from the northeast; or across eastern North Dakota and southwestern Manitoba, entering the study area from the northwest. As a result of these glacial events the sediment of Unit A, Sebeka Formation, New …
Glacial Stratigraphy Of Southeastern North Dakota, Michael Camara
Glacial Stratigraphy Of Southeastern North Dakota, Michael Camara
Theses and Dissertations
Seven lithostratigraphic units are recognized in the glacial sediment {till) of southeastern North Dakota. Five of these units are not formally named; eventually most of these units will be correlated with formations in surrounding regions. Two of these units, Gardar and Dahlen, are formations recognized in northeastern North Dakota {Hobbs, 1975). The seven lithostratigraphic units are differentiated and correlated using the percentage of the sand, silt, and clay fractions of the till and using the proportion of igneous and metamorphic rock fragments, limestone and dolomite fragments, and shale fragments in the very-coarse-sand fraction (1 to 2 mm) of the till. …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
4-bromopyridine hydrochloride is a compound which has a relatively high formal charge on the 4 carbon. Molecular orbital calculations on pyridine show a +0.18 charge on the 4 position, a +0.15 charge on the 2 position, and a +0.05 charge on the 3 position with the nitrogen holding a -0.59 charge.12 And in aqueous acidic solutions, and added +1 charge would be distributed throughout the aromatic ring of the resulting pyridinium ion, thus increasing all charges. Benzene would show all carbons being identical having relative charges of zero each on the scale used for pyridine. As a result of …

Feeding Ecology Of Black Sea Bass Centropristis Striata On An Artificial Reef Off Virginia (Perciforms: Serranidae), Ping K. Chee
OES Theses and Dissertations
The feeding ecology of the black sea bass, Centropristis striata, associated with artificial reefs shows seasonal and size-related changes. Monthly collections totaling 520 black sea bass taken from an artificial reef near the Chesapeake Light Tower, Virginia, between August 1975 and May 1976, were analyzed for food habits as revealed by number, volume, frequency of occurrence and a modified Index of Relative Importance.
The black sea bass feeds on the artificial reef as well as the adjacent areas. When food was abundant on the reef, food items from the reef and the surrounding area were consumed. Upon depletion of the …

Experimental Use Of Av-Alarm For Repelling Quelea From Rice In Somalia, Larry C. Holcomb
Experimental Use Of Av-Alarm For Repelling Quelea From Rice In Somalia, Larry C. Holcomb
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The Av-Alarm is a device for producing loud intermittent sounds which are sometimes effective in repelling pest birds or mammals. (Av-Alarm is manufactured by Av-Alarm Corp, P.O. Box 2488, Santa Maria, California 93454.) The sound is intended to irritate or cause anxiety in animals, perhaps by interfering with normal sound communication sufficiently to repel them from the area. Boudreau(1972) and Stewart (1974) report factors relating to alarm stimuli in bird control. Stewart (1974), HcCracken (1972) and Palmer (1976) reported the use of Av-Alarm in repelling pests under several different situations. However, Jeffrey Jackson (pers. comm.) has reported the use of …

For the bird control problems in the food industry I think we have a good pair to work with us. We have Bob Yeager, a pest control authority. Fred Baur is from Procter and Gamble, a great company with a long record of association with the pest control industry. Third, we have with us Jim Dupre, whose experience is with the Food and Drug Administration. And with all the government controls we've learned to expect from the government in the last few years, I think it's good for us to know that we have had a long and good record …
Methiocarb As A Bird Repellent For Mature Sweet Corn, Allan R. Stickley Jr., Charles R. Ingram
Methiocarb As A Bird Repellent For Mature Sweet Corn, Allan R. Stickley Jr., Charles R. Ingram
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Sweet corn in Ohio is an important high-value truck crop (74,000 acres in 1974--Ohio Crop Rep. Serv., 1975) that is especially vulnerable to blackbird damage. For this reason, a chemical treatment that would repel birds from sweet corn would be advantageous. A candidate chemical for this use is methiocarb [3,5-dimethyl-4-(Methylthio)-phenyl methylcarbamate = Mesurol (product of Chemagro, Division of Mobay Chemical Corporation)]. In addition to insecticidal, acaricidal, and molluscieidal properties (Hermann and Kolbe, 1971:286), Schafer and Brunton (1971) established in cage tests that methiocarb was a promising bird repellent because low concentrations (<0.16%) would repel birds from treated rice seed. The chemical apparently reinforces a bad taste by producing a conditioned aver- sion to its intoxicating effects (Rogers, 1974). When applied to corn seed prior to planting, methiocarb treatments reduced blackbird damage to sprouts (Hermann and Kolbe, 1971; Stickley and Guarino, 1972; Ingram, et al., 1974; Linehan, et al., 1975; Stickley and Ingram, 1975). However, Mitchell, et al. (1975) did not show significant protection, and Linehan, et al, (1975) showed some phytotoxicity in cold, wet growing conditions. Methiocarb treatments also have shown indications of efficacy when applied to mature grain crops [rice at 10.0 and 3.2 lb (active material) per acre (DeHaven, et al., 1971), sorghum at 2.0 lb (active material) per acre (Mott, et al., 1974), and sorghum at 1.6 lb (active material) per acre (Mott and Lewis, 1975)]. Because of these results, we conducted a screening experiment in 1975 to determine the feasibility of methiocarb treatments for repelling blackbirds from ripening sweet corn.

Preliminary Laboratory And Field Trials Of Curb, A Possible Avian Repellent, Ken Ewing, A. Charles Crabb, Lee R. Martin, Roger Moitoso
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Grape growers in California lose between three and four million dollars annually from damage caused principally by two bird species: Linnets (carpodacus mexicanus) and Starlings (sturnus vulgaris) (DeHaven, 1974; Crase, et al., 1975),. Few effective tools exist for the growers to use in reducing crop losses from bird damage; and current bio-political trends may preclude the use of toxicants to control local depredating bird populations, especially Linnets. The use of chemical repellents is a possible alternative. Testing of the chemical repellent methiocarb [3,5-dimethyl-4-(methylthio) phenol methylcarbamate] to protect California wine grapes has been conducted by Denver Wildlife Research Center personnel (Guarino, …

The Need For Practical And Objective Test Protocols For Bird Damage Control Chemicals, E. W. Schafer Jr.
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The registration and reregistration process for vertebrate pesticides is difficult at best and is becoming more complicated and time consuming each year, particularly for bird-damage control chemicals. Although much of the information that is required for U.S. registrations (such as toxicology, general chemistry, and analytical methodology) is beyond our purview at this seminar, there are some areas where research and management personnel can have a favorable impact on present and future requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). I am speaking in particular of the methodology used to determine the laboratory and field efficacy of bird damage control chemicals. Because …
