A Simulation Model For Ring-Necked Pheasants, Melvin W. Taylor Jan 1978

A Simulation Model For Ring-Necked Pheasants, Melvin W. Taylor

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

One of the most important game birds in the United States is the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). This Asian refugee has provided recreation for untold numbers of sportsmen. Its presence has meant millions of dollars for state game agency coffers, not to mention its impact on local economies. Pheasant populations have fluctuated widely in past years, but the overall trend since the early 1960's has been downward over most of the pheasant range. This decline was caused primarily by loss of habitat due to change in agricultural land use (Mohlis 1974, Dahlgren 1963, Kobriger 1972, Taylor et al. …

The Chemical And Biological Effect Of A Gulf Stream Intrusion Off St. Augustine, Florida, Larry P. Atkinson, Gustav-Adolf Paffenhöfer, William M. Dunstan Jan 1978

The Chemical And Biological Effect Of A Gulf Stream Intrusion Off St. Augustine, Florida, Larry P. Atkinson, Gustav-Adolf Paffenhöfer, William M. Dunstan

CCPO Publications

During a 3-day anchor station in shelf waters off St. Augustine, Florida we observed the effect of an intruding mass of deeper Gulf Stream water. The shelf waters were relatively low in nutrients and salinity while the Gulf Stream waters were high in salinity and nutrients. Onshore currents correlated with increases in nitrate and chlorophyll concentrations.

The advection of higher nutrient Gulf Stream water coincided with high chlorophyll (∼ mg chl a m−3) concentrations and dense populations of Phaeocystis pouchetii (up to 3.12 × 10°1−1). Zooplankton sampling was impossible in the bottom layer because of the …

Cygnus A At 99 Ghz: Observations Of The Three Principal Components And The Interpretation Of The Central Source, R. W. Hobbs, S. P. Maran, Menas Kafatos, L. W. Brown

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The three principal emission components of Cygnus A have been observed at 99 GHz, the highest frequency at which radio measurements of this source have been accomplished. The observations show no definite indication of a high-frequency cutoff in the spectrum of the compact central component, which perhaps may be attributed to an optically thin synchrotron source that peaks at a frequency of several hundred GHz.

Penrose Pair Production In Massive, Extreme Kerr Black Holes, D. Leiter, Menas Kafatos Jan 1978

Penrose Pair Production In Massive, Extreme Kerr Black Holes, D. Leiter, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We show that in the case of very massive (M > 108 M0 ) Kerr black holes with extreme ranges of angular momentum 1 ≥ a/M > 0.998, the possibility of photon-induced Penrose pair production (PPP) in the ergosphere is very plausible. The pairs that escape the ergosphere are very high energy and on the order of the GeV rest mass of the Penrose accreted protons which participate in the photon-induced pair production process. Application of this model to the case of quasistellar objects (QSOs) is shown to lead to reasonable predictions about their masses, lifetimes, and luminosities. The physical mechanism is …

Chemistry Of Low-Valent Molybdenum Phosphite Complexes: Models Of Seven-Coordinate Reaction Intermediates, E. L. Muetterties, J. F. Kirner, W. J. Evans, S. Abdel-Meguid, I. Tavanaiepour, V. W. Day

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

A simple synthesis of the zerovalent complex Mo[P(OCH3)3]6 has been devised from a potassium reduction of MoCI4(tetrahydrofuran)2 followed by reaction with trimethyl phosphite at 70°. Protonation of this octahedral complex gave only low yields of the expected seven-coordinate hydride, HMo[P(OCH3)3]6+. The major product was an octahedral nonhydridic cation, Mo[P(OCH3)3]5P(OCH3)2+, derived from proton cleavage of the P─O phosphite ester bond. This octahedral cation was stereochemically nonrigid, apparently through facile methoxy group migration. Close packing by methoxy groups …

A Solid State 13C-Nmr Study Of Diamonds And Graphites, Charles A. Wilkie, Thomas C. Ehlert, Daniel T. Haworth

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The 13C-NMR spectra of gem quality and industrial diamonds show two resonances with the more intense resonance at high field. Two resonances are also shown in 13C-NMR spectra of various graphites; however, the low field resonance is of greater intensity than the high field resonance in the graphites. The resonances are very broad and they are assigned to graphite type (sp2) carbon and diamond type (sp3) carbon.

Utah's 1977 Drought, Trevor C. Hughes, Clark Bigler, Jerry Olds, Richard Griffin, Arlo Richardson, L. Douglas James, Norris Stenquist, James Harvey

Reports

The Utah Drought of 1976-1977 has been characterized as the wettest drought in history. It was produced by the driest winter season of record followed by summer rains which were much wetter than normal in many regions of the state. Stream-flow is highly correlated with winter rather than summer precipitation and therefore the most severe impacts of the drought were related to the record low stream-flow during 1977 plus the ski industry impacts which were directly related to 1976-1977 snowfall. Drought impacts upon several sectors of the economy plus the extensive responses of all levels of government in the form …

Some Results On Inferences For The Gamma And Double Exponential Distributions, John Victor Grice Jan 1978

Some Results On Inferences For The Gamma And Double Exponential Distributions, John Victor Grice

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation is presented in publication form and consists of two articles. The first article considers testing the mean of a gamma distribution. For the case that both parameters in the ganuna distribution are unknown, approximate tests for the mean are derived and tables are provided for their implementation. The power of the tests are compared to the power of the uniformly most powerful tests on the mean when the shape parameter is known. In addition, some limiting results are derived. The second article compares conditional and unconditional methods of constructing confidence intervals for the location parameter in the two-parameter …

The Rhame Bed (Slope Formation, Paleocene), A Silcrete And Deep Weathering Profile, In Southwestern North Dakota, Barbara D. Wehrfritz

Theses and Dissertations

The Rhame Bed is a unit at the top of the Slope Formation (for merly part of the "Ludlow Formation") in the Fort Union Group deposited during Paleocene time.

The Rhame Bed was mapped in western Slope County and north central Bowman County. The bed outcrops on the tops of buttes, at the present groJnd surface in large level areas, or in steep slopes. Although the bed is laterally discontinuous, it is a clearly mappable unit.

The Rhame Bed typically consists of two dominant lithologies: siliceous rock and white sediment. The siliceous rock is hard, gray, and made of silt-sized …

The Fine Structure Of Hamann's Organ In Leptodirus Hohenwarti, A Highly Specialized Cave Bathysciinae (Coleoptera, Catopidae), Fiorenza Accordi, Valerio Sbordoni Jan 1978

The Fine Structure Of Hamann's Organ In Leptodirus Hohenwarti, A Highly Specialized Cave Bathysciinae (Coleoptera, Catopidae), Fiorenza Accordi, Valerio Sbordoni

International Journal of Speleology

Hamann’s organ in Leptodirus hohenwarti a highly specialized cave Bathysciinae, has been studied under the TEM, SEM and light microscope. This receptor organ located in the 7th, 9th and 10th antennal articles and previously referred to as the “vesicule olfactive” and as the “antennal organ” or “antennal vesicle”, reaches its highest degree of structural complexity in leptodirus. This paper attempts to establish some degree of synonymy among the terms used by earlier authors in describing the various antennal parts and sensilla. Five types of sensilla to be found in the organ are described, namely cribrose-stick sensilla, cribrose-utricular sensilla, star-shaped sensilla, …

Ecological Investigations Of The Influence Of A Polluted River On Surrounding Interstitial Underground Waters, Milan Meštrov, Romana Lattinger-Penko Jan 1978

Ecological Investigations Of The Influence Of A Polluted River On Surrounding Interstitial Underground Waters, Milan Meštrov, Romana Lattinger-Penko

International Journal of Speleology

Because of the fundamental biological investigations and also of the practical importance, the authors investigated interstitial subterranean water (hyporheic) near a polluted river Sava in the plain where the underground waters are considered as potable. With the comparison of the physical, chemical, bacteriological, saprobiological and faunistic characteristics of the river and its hyporheic zone in different seasons their mutual relation is detected. The results show the influence of polluted river water on the hyporheic water within the river bed to at least 2 m depth.

A Critical Review Of Hypotheses On The Origin Of Vermiculations, A. Bini, M. Cavalli Gori, S. Gori Jan 1978

A Critical Review Of Hypotheses On The Origin Of Vermiculations, A. Bini, M. Cavalli Gori, S. Gori

International Journal of Speleology

Mud and clay vermiculations are irregular and discontinuous deposits of incoherent materials, almost ubiquitous. Found both inside and outside of caves, overlying limestone or other materials, they are formed from many substances (clay, mud, candle-black, colloidal silica, etc.). Also their shape dimensions vary greatly. The following genetical hypotheses have been proposed: fossil fillings; chemico-genetical deposition; biological formation; mechanical deposition from moving water or air; clay-layer drying process (Montoriol-Pous hypothesis); physicochemical deposition from drying liquid films. The last is proposed by the authors who, having discussed the various hypotheses, give many examples and the results of some experiments. They distinguish two …

Contribution À L'Étude Des Cavités Karstiques Du Djurdjura (Algérie). Description Morpho-Hydrogéologique Et Cadre Évolutif, Yves Quinif

International Journal of Speleology

In North-Africa, the karst of Djurdjura Mountains is important because it shows high-alpine characters. In others papers, we have studied shallow morphology and speleological explorations. Here, we describe the caves: morphology, qualitative hydrology and fillings. These cavities are replaced in their morpho-structural context. We make distinctions between kinds of cavities. Gulfs and resurgences characterize high-alpine karst which is actual. Other caves that have their opening at the middle of slopes are dry, disconnected of actual morphological context. They belong to past karstification phases. From the synthesis of those elements, we show that it is possible to use karstic data in …

Factor Analysis Method, Stephen Hauwah Kan Jan 1978

Factor Analysis Method, Stephen Hauwah Kan

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The logical steps performed when doing a factor analysis can be classified into three operation s. The first step concerns the exact mode of analysis and involves the type of centering, scaling and formation o f sums of squares . The second step involves extraction of initial factors. The algebraic basis of the factors are rotated in the last step to obtain a more easily interpreted set of factors. At each step several different methods have been suggested and appear in the literature. Two primary modes of factor analysis are commonly used an d they are denoted as R-mode and …

Stratigraphy And Depositional Setting Of The Carrington Shale Facies (Mississippian) Of The Williston Basin, Peter F. Bjorlie Jan 1978

Stratigraphy And Depositional Setting Of The Carrington Shale Facies (Mississippian) Of The Williston Basin, Peter F. Bjorlie

Theses and Dissertations

The Carrington shale facies is a radioactive illitic lagoonal shale, apparently deposited behind lime mudstone banks (Waulsortian bioherms), along the eastern margin of the Williston basin during Early Mississippian time.

The Scallion subinterval, which is the basal subunit of the Bottineau interval of the Madison Formation in North Dakota, is divisible into six lithologic facies, one of which is the Carrington shale facies. West of the shale facies, on the basin-shelf hinge line, is the lime mudstone facies. Basinward of this facies is the interbedded shale-limestone facies. Stratigraphically above the latter two facies is the sand-silt-shale facies. Overlying a portion …

Depositional And Paragenetic Controls On Porosity Development, Upper Red River Formation, North Dakota, Kipp W. Carroll Jan 1978

Depositional And Paragenetic Controls On Porosity Development, Upper Red River Formation, North Dakota, Kipp W. Carroll

Theses and Dissertations

The upper Red River Formation in North Dakota comprises a subtidal/intertidal facies overlain by three evaporitic sequences of four lithologic units each, labeled "P," "R," and "F" in stratigraphic order. Four porosity zones are recognized in the upper Red River: the subtidal/ intertidal facies forms one porosity zone, and each evaporitic sequence contains another. Each unit in a sequence, as well as the sequence itself, is thinner and less widespread than its preceding counterpart. All strata are laterally continuous across the main part of the Williston basin in North Dakota, but, the porosity zones eventually disappear to the east as …

The Relationship Of Bottom Sediments To The Current-Generated Topography On Crumps Bank And Willoughby Bank, Southern Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, Eugene Robert Brush Jan 1978

The Relationship Of Bottom Sediments To The Current-Generated Topography On Crumps Bank And Willoughby Bank, Southern Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, Eugene Robert Brush

OES Theses and Dissertations

Crumps Bank and Willoughby Bank in Southern Chesapeake Bay are an area of varying topography. The area is bounded by two large bridge-tunnel spans, the dredged Thimble Shoal Channel borders it to the north, and the Ocean View section of Norfolk, Virginia lies to the south. The purpose of this investigation is to determine the relationship of the bottom sediments of Crumps Bank and Willoughby Bank.to the current-generated topography, and that this topography is the result of tidal currents.

The bathymetry, bottom sediment characteristics, bottom tidal currents, and the correlation of depth to various sediment parameters were examined to determine …

Predation On Furbearers And Management Alternatives, Ronald D. Andrews Dec 1977

Predation On Furbearers And Management Alternatives, Ronald D. Andrews

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Most of the presentations from other members of the panel have discussed direct predation of one animal upon another with evidence and data to support it. Their presentations indicate that in some instances, considerable data has been collected that substantiates the fact that predation has been and can be a limiting factor in sustaining certain local animal populations. Suggestions have also been made concerning management alternatives that might help to reduce this predatory impact when desirable. Predation on furbearers and its impact is considerably more ambiguous and abstract. Facts and data concerning significant predation on furbearers, except for mink on …

Predation On Big Game And Its Management, Samuel L. Beasom Dec 1977

Predation On Big Game And Its Management, Samuel L. Beasom

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

This paper summarizes information from the literature and personal observation to present an overview of the effects of predators on big game populations. Specifically it examines control of prey populations, culling of inferior prey, and stimulation of prey productivity. Food habit investigations were omitted because of the impossibility of evaluating the impact of predation by this approach because of a lack of population data.
