A Deuterium Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study Of Chain Disorder In Lamellar Potassium Palmitate: The Effect Of Long And Short Chain Guests, Peter A. Beckmann, E. E. Burnell, M. A. Heldman, K. R. Northey, T. P. Higgs
Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship
The deuterium magnetic resonance spectra of lamellar phases of host perdeuterated potassium palmitate mixed with varying amounts of guest protiated potassium octanoate and behenate and 86.3 mol% D2O are reported. At higher temperatures, the short chain guests give rise to more fluidity and the long chain guests give rise to less fluidity towards the end of the host chain. At low temperatures there are changes in the interaction between the polar head group and the water which depend on sample composition. The transition from the lamellar phase to the low temperature gel phase is investigated and in some …
Evaluation Of Legibility Of Reflectorized License Plates, C. Earl Israelsen, Ronald V. Canfield
Evaluation Of Legibility Of Reflectorized License Plates, C. Earl Israelsen, Ronald V. Canfield
Reports
The rainfall simulator at the Utah Water Research Laboratory, Utah State University, Logan, Utah, was utilized in evaluating various types of license plates. This unique facility enables the production of controlled uniform rainfall inside the laboratory. For this experiment, rainfall rates of 0" (dry), 1/2" and 2" per hour were used to compare reflective performance of reflective sheeting (RS), beads-on-paint (BOP), and new paint (NP) license plates under dark nighttime conditions. Both new and used license plates were evaluted. The three types of new plates were made and embossed at the Idaho State Prison using stanard state manufacturing procedures. The …
Teleseismic Evidence For A Low-Velocity Body Under The Coso Geothermal Area, P. Reasenberg, W. Ellsworth, A. Walter
Teleseismic Evidence For A Low-Velocity Body Under The Coso Geothermal Area, P. Reasenberg, W. Ellsworth, A. Walter
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Teleseismic P wave arrivals were recorded by a dense array of seismographs tations located in the Coso geothermal area, California. The resulting pattern of relative residuals reveals an area showing approximately 0.2-s excess travel time that migrates with changing source azimuth, suggesting that the area is the 'delay shadow' produced by a deep, low-velocity body. Inversion of the relative residual data for three-dimensional velocity structure determines the lateral variations in velocity to a depth of 22.5 km beneath the array. An intense low-velocity body, which coincides with the surface expressions of late Pleistocene rhyolitic volcanism, high heat flow, and hydrothermal …
State Of Stress In The Conterminous United States, Mary Lou Zoback, Mark D. Zoback
State Of Stress In The Conterminous United States, Mary Lou Zoback, Mark D. Zoback
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Inferring principal stress directions from geologic data, focal mechanisms, and in situ stress measurements, we have prepared a map of principal horizontal stress orientations for the conterminous United States. Stress provinces with linear dimensions which range between 100 and 2000 km were defined on the basis of the directions and relative magnitude of principal stresses. Within a given province, stress orientations appear quite uniform (usually within the estimated range of accuracy of the different methods used to determine stress). Available data on the transition in stress direction between the different stress provinces indicate that these transitions can be abrupt, occurring …

Iue Observations Of A Luminous M Supergiant That Exhibits Emission Continuum In The Far Ultraviolet, A. G. Michalitsianos, Menas Kafatos, R. W. Hobbs
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
IUE observations of the late-type M supergiant TV Gem (M1 lab) have been obtained that reveal strong UV continuum between 1200 and 3200 A. The continuum is essentially featureless with the exception of a number of broad absorption features in the short wavelength spectral range. UV emission from this star is unexpected because earlier ground-based observations give no indication of a possible association with an early companion or circumstellar ionized nebulosity. We find that a B9 or A1 III-IV type star approximately 2-3 magnitudes fainter than the M star could explain the level of UV continuum observed, but a fully …

150 Ghz Observations Of Three Radio Galaxies, Menas Kafatos, R. W. Hobbs, S. P. Maran, L. W. Brown
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Radio galaxies were observed for the first time at 150 GHz. The central sources in Cyg A and 3C Ill were detected, as were the two radio lobes of Cyg A. No emission was found from the central source in 3C 236. Each of these three central sources has been previously discussed as the site of the energy supply for the associated distant components. The millimeter-wavelength emission from the central sources in Cyg A and 3C 111 is probably due in each case to a compact component that is optically thin to synchrotron radiation above about 35 GHz. These components …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
By examining the interaction between supernova (SN) ejecta and the various environments in which the explosive event might occur, we conclude that only a small fraction of the many SNs produce observable supernova remnants (SNRs). This fraction, which is found to depend weakly upon the lower mass limit of the SN progenitors, and more strongly on the specific characteristics of the associated interstellar medium, decreases from approximately 15% near the galactic center to 10% at R8a1 -10 kpc and drops nearly to zero for Rga~> 15 kpc. Generally, whether a SNR is detectable is determined by the density of the …

Forbidden Lines Of Np^Q Ions. I. Detailed Balance And Line Intensity Ratios, Menas Kafatos, J. P. Lynch
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Ground state forbidden transitions of np^q ions of C, N, 0, Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Fe can provide important information on the state of cosmic ionized gases. Wavelengths of these lines are in the far- and near-UV visible and near-- and far-IR regions of the spectrum. The line intensity ratios of particular transitions in q = 2, 4 ions can provide information on the temperature of the gas and in q = 3 ions information on the density of the gas. In the present work we have tabulated the line intensities of 95 transitions of these ions, which include …

Inhibition Of N⁸-Acetylspermidine Deacetylation Activity Of Rat Liver, Michael J. Santacroce
Inhibition Of N⁸-Acetylspermidine Deacetylation Activity Of Rat Liver, Michael J. Santacroce
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
An enzyme activity located in the soluble fraction of rat liver which is known to deacetylate N8-acetylspermidine is studied. Using a crude cytosol preparation from rat liver, tritium-labelled N8-acetylspermidine [acetyl-3H] was shown to undergo deacetylation which was dependent upon both time of incubation and protein concentration. The Michalis constant for this deacetylation of N8-acetylspermidine is approximately 4.4 μM.
N1-Acetylspermidine showed a competitive inhibition of this N8-acetylspermidine deacetylation activity, and was found to be the most potent inhibitor tested. Diamine and polyamine compounds were also shown to inhibit the …

Faulting Patterns In North-Central Nevada And Strength Of The Crust, Mary Lou Zoback, Mark D. Zoback
Faulting Patterns In North-Central Nevada And Strength Of The Crust, Mary Lou Zoback, Mark D. Zoback
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
NNE normal fault trends characterize much of the northern Basin and Range province. These faults make sharp bends to NNW and ENE trends in north- central Nevada in the vicinity of a mid-Miocene rift characterized by a zone of diabase dike swarms, graben-filling flows, and a coinciding aeromagnetic anomaly. Despite a roughly 45 ° change in the least principal stress direction since mid-Miocene time, pre-existing NNW- and ENE-trending faults in the vicinity of the rift accommodated the extension whereas regionally, major crustal blocks were faulted along a NNE trend, approximately perpendicular to the modern least principal stress direction. An assumed …
Evaluation Of Livestock Runoff As A Source Of Water Pollution In Northern Utah, Stephen T. Wieneke, Dennis B. George, Daniel S. Filip, Brad Finney
Evaluation Of Livestock Runoff As A Source Of Water Pollution In Northern Utah, Stephen T. Wieneke, Dennis B. George, Daniel S. Filip, Brad Finney
Reports
A mathematical model was developed to predict the impact of dairy and beef cattle feedlot runoff on receiving streams. The mathematical expressions used in the model describing runoff quantity and quality were not only a function of single rain or snow precipitation events but also consecutive events prior to the runoff occurrence. The runoff quantity and quality were also a function of feedlot surface. Computer simualtions indicate that pollutants from feedlot runoff may have a significant impact on receiving streams during winter months. Runoff from feedlots located within the study area, however, had little impact on water quality in the …

Model Of Drawdown In Well Fields Influenced By Boundaries: Technical Description And User's Manual, Najwan T. Shareef, David S. Bowles
Reports
This model is designed to calculate the drawdown of a piezometric surface or water table at a given point of interest in a well field. Many different well and aquifer hydraulic conditions can be considered. The effect of field boundaries is solved by the image well theory. Many points of interest, well (recharge or injection), boundaries (barrier or recharge), and time increments as well as constant and variable pumping rate case have been included in the model. The drawdown at a point of interest can be decomposed into the following compenents for each real well due to the effect of: …
Flood Damage Mitigation In Utah, L. Douglas James, Dean T. Larson, Daniel H. Hoggan, Terrence L. Glover
Flood Damage Mitigation In Utah, L. Douglas James, Dean T. Larson, Daniel H. Hoggan, Terrence L. Glover
Reports
Utah is subjected to flash flooding in mountain canyons, mudflows and shallow water flooding on lowlands at the canyon outlets, storm water flooding after thunderstorms in urban areas, and prolonged periods of inundation in certain lowland areas during snowmelt periods. In response to these problems, individuals are making private land use and flood proofing decisions, larger communities have storm water collection programs, three federal agencies are involved in structural flood control, and the Federal Emergency management Agency is managing a National Flood Insurance Program designed to promote community floodplain management efforts. A framework was deceloped of the dynamically interactive feedback …
Management Of Rural Domestic Water Systems In Utah, Trevor C. Hughes
Management Of Rural Domestic Water Systems In Utah, Trevor C. Hughes
Reports
Introduction: There are now more than 400 community type public drinking water systems in Utah. Considerable state and federal assistance is available for construction or renovation of such systems, but once the system is constructed and the consulting engineer leaves, the managers of the smaller systems find themselves quite isolated from sources of professional assistance. The larger systems have a revenue base which can provide ongoing services of a consultant or salaried engineer and well trained operators. The smaller systems, particularly low density rural systems where the length of pipeline per user is very high, usually find themselves barely able …
Management Of The Hydrologic System In Areas Subject To Coal Mining Activities, Rollin H. Hotchkiss, Eugene K. Israelsen, J. Paul Riley
Management Of The Hydrologic System In Areas Subject To Coal Mining Activities, Rollin H. Hotchkiss, Eugene K. Israelsen, J. Paul Riley
Reports
Publicity given to the detrimental effects of mining activities on the environment has tended to overshadow somewhat the hydrologic opportunities and benfits that could be associated with these activities. For example, many areas disturbed by surface mining have proved to be excellent recharge areas for groundwater aquifers. The degree to which mine sites can be exploited to improve management of the hydrologic system depends on both the local geology and the mining techniques used. The report examines the effects of present mining activities on the associated hydrology system, and identifies specific mining procedures and management techniques which not only minimize …
Vulnerability Of Water Supply Systems To Droughts, David S. Bowles, Trevor C. Hughes, W. Robert James, Donald T. Jensen, Frank W. Haws
Vulnerability Of Water Supply Systems To Droughts, David S. Bowles, Trevor C. Hughes, W. Robert James, Donald T. Jensen, Frank W. Haws
Reports
This summary completion report describes the project work completed in three areas: 1) the development and preliminary testing of drought severity and vulnerability indices, 2) the impacts of Utah's 1977 drought, and 3) an operation comparison of stochastic streamflow models. The drought indices were evaluated for three municipal and three irrigation water supply systems in Utah. It was concluded that a continuous loss function to define the effects of water shortage would be more appropriate than the existing assumption that drought-related lossed occur suddenly at a certain degree of water shortage. Information on the impacts of Utah's 1977 drought was …

A need has been established to initiate a Cooperative Education Program for the Division of Technology at Georgia Southern College. This study was devoted to …
Angular Differential Cross Sections For Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To Its N=2 Level By Impact Of 15-100 Kev He⁺ Ions, John Eldon Aldag
Angular Differential Cross Sections For Excitation Of Atomic Hydrogen To Its N=2 Level By Impact Of 15-100 Kev He⁺ Ions, John Eldon Aldag
Doctoral Dissertations
Differential cross sections Ear excitation of atomic hydrogen to its n = 2 level by 15-100 keV He+ ions have been determined for cm. angles from Oto 8 m rad. The cross sections were obtained from an analysis of the angular distribution of the scattered ions which had lost an energy corresponding to the excitation of the target to its n= 2 level. The shape of the differential cross section changes rapidly with increasing incident energy. At 15 keV, the cross section falls off by a factor of 5 in 6 m rad. At 100 keV, the cross section …

Large-Angle Electron-Photon Coincidence Experiment In Atomic Hydrogen, E. Weigold, L. Frost, K. (Kaare) J. Nygaard
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
1s-2p excitation in hydrogen has been studied by observing the angular correlation of Lyman photons detected in coincidence with inelastically scattered electrons at 54.4 eV incident energy. The electron scattering angles ranged from 10°to 133°; the results at scattering angles larger than 20°cannot be explained by currently available theories. © 1980 The American Physical Society.
