Keynote Address - Wildlife Damage Control And The Cooperative Extension Services, James E. Miller Oct 1981

Keynote Address - Wildlife Damage Control And The Cooperative Extension Services, James E. Miller

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Since the establishment of the Extension Service within the United States Department of Agriculture in 1914, in accordance with the mandate of the Smith-Lever Act, Extension personnel have recognized the need and responsibility to provide educational programs to assist clientele both rural and urban. These programs from the "grass roots" level to the Federal level are based on the "long established premise that assisting people with factual, effective and practical educational programs to help them solve problems, evaluate alternatives and make objective decisions, would provide these people with information that would enable them to help themselves. Wildlife damage control was …

U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service Coyote Control Research, Guy Connolly Oct 1981

U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service Coyote Control Research, Guy Connolly

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

This paper reviews recent research by the Denver Wildlife Research Center, Section of Predator Management Research, on chemical and lethal coyote control methods. Steel trap modifications, aerial shooting, den hunting, the M-44 (spring-loaded sodium cyanide ejector), toxic and nontoxic baits, the toxic collar, other livestock-borne toxicants, development of new toxicants, and aversive conditioning with lithium chloride are discussed. No new, lethal coyote control method has been implemented into practical use over the past decade, but toxic baits and den hunting were lost or banned from use in the Federal-Cooperative Animal Damage Control Program. One new technique, the toxic collar, may …

Prairie Dog Dispersal In Wind Cave National Park: Possibilities For Control, Monte G. Garrett, William L. Franklin Oct 1981

Prairie Dog Dispersal In Wind Cave National Park: Possibilities For Control, Monte G. Garrett, William L. Franklin

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

A study was conducted in Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota, to collect basic information on black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) dispersal and to test alternative control techniques. Dispersal occurred during a limited time period in late spring, involved both male and female prairie dogs, and resulted in relatively short movements and poor survivorship. The use of artificial visual barriers to inhibit colony expansion was effective but difficult to apply. The use of diethylstilbestrol as a temporary anti-fertility agent was shown to be an easy and effective method to reduce prairie dog reproduction and decrease colony expansion.

Reducing Coyote Damage To Sheep With Non-Lethal Techniques, Jeffrey S. Green Oct 1981

Reducing Coyote Damage To Sheep With Non-Lethal Techniques, Jeffrey S. Green

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Since 1972, when the U.S. Government restricted uses of toxicants for controlling coyotes, a variety of non-lethal techniques has been tested for effectiveness in protecting livestock. Some were ineffective, but others helped to reduce the incidence of predation on sheep. In addition to sound management practices, electric fencing and livestock guarding dogs appear to have the widest applicability for sheep producers. Mechanical frightening devices have been successful in some fenced pasture sheep operations. As with the lethal methods currently used, non-lethal control does not solve all depredation problems. A combination of various control techniques (both lethal and non-lethal) is necessary …

A Direct Formulation And Computer-Implementation Of A Symbolic Network Analysis Algorithm, Timothy James Knerr Oct 1981

A Direct Formulation And Computer-Implementation Of A Symbolic Network Analysis Algorithm, Timothy James Knerr

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An algorithm for the symbolic analysis of linear, time-invariant, active or passive networks is presented. The algorithm incorporates the best features of earlier numerical and topological methods of symbolic analysis. A hybrid set of equations is formulated for a closed linear graph and arranged in matrix form. A numerical evaluation procedure for the determinant of this hybrid matrix results in an efficient method of symbolic analysis. A proof of the algorithm based on determinant evaluation by a permutation product expansion provides insight into relationships with other methods of symbolic analysis. A computer program implementation of the algorithm is described and …

Algal Dynamics In A Cypress Stand In The Seasonally Flooded Great Dismal Swamp, Joseph A. Atchue Iii Oct 1981

Algal Dynamics In A Cypress Stand In The Seasonally Flooded Great Dismal Swamp, Joseph A. Atchue Iii

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The dynamics of epiphytic algae and phytoplankton were studied at a cypress stand in the Great Dismal Swamp, Virginia. Mean epiphytic algal biomass was 19.9 g m-2 and mean planktonic biomass was 3.4 g m-2.Nutrient concentrations in the epiphytic algae and the litter were determined. The algae had mean concentrations of 1.67% and 0.18%. They were found to immobilize as much as 0.5 g N m-2 and 0.06 g P m-2. This suggests that the algae are important as nutrient conservers. The phytoplankton were composed primarily of Bacillariophyceae. They exhibited a more or less …

A Quantitative Description Of Migratory Behavior Of The Brown Shrimp (Penaeus Aztecus) With Applications In Fisheries Management, Anne Madolyn Babcock Oct 1981

A Quantitative Description Of Migratory Behavior Of The Brown Shrimp (Penaeus Aztecus) With Applications In Fisheries Management, Anne Madolyn Babcock

OES Theses and Dissertations

A quantitative description of the migratory behavior of the brown shrimp, Penaeus aztecus, was established using the density approach. A theoretical time density was estimated by the proportion of catch and catch per boat hour NOAA-NMFS fisheries statistics collected in Pamlico Sound, the Neuse River, and Core Sound. A clear quantitative description of brown shrimp migratory timing is found in the time densities. The impact of various physical tactors on the progress of the fishery in time and space can be objectively evaluated by using the time density statistics as dependent variables in modeling efforts. The distributions also enable …

Synthesis Of Dihydroisoquinolines And Tetrahydroisoquinolines, John J. Schlager Oct 1981

Synthesis Of Dihydroisoquinolines And Tetrahydroisoquinolines, John J. Schlager

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Dihydroisoquinolines and tetrahydroisoquinolines are compounds which possess a variety of pharmacological activities. New easier methods of synthetic manipulations of these structures is of constant interest in the pharmaceutical industry.

This paper describes a new three step method of preparing 1-alkyl- and 1-aryl-tetrahydroisoquinolines from a tetrahydroisoquinoline. The synthesis involves the N-chlorination of tetrahydroisoquinoline followed by dehydrohalogenation with potassium superoxide. The reaction products are the dihydroisoquinolines. Overall yields range from 85-96%. The unsubstituted, 1-methyl-, and 1-phenyl-J,4-dihydroisoquinolines have been formed. Organometallation of the unsubstituted dihydroisoquinoline provides the 1-substituted tetrahydroisoquinoline. The 1-benzyl-, 1-n-butyl-, 1-ethyl-, 1-methyl-, and 1-phenyl-1,2,J,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines were prepared. The use of Grignard and …

Long-Time Behavior Of Ginzburg-Landau Systems Far From Equilibrium, Evangelos A. Coutsias, B. A. Huberman Sep 1981

Long-Time Behavior Of Ginzburg-Landau Systems Far From Equilibrium, Evangelos A. Coutsias, B. A. Huberman

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Using singular-perturbation techniques, we study the stability of modulated structures generated by driving Ginzburg-Landau systems far from equilibrium. We show that, far from equilibrium, the steady-state behavior is controlled by an effective Lagrangian which possesses the same functional form as the original free energy but with renormalized coefficients. We study both linear and nonlinear sources and determine their influence on the long-term stability of the bifurcating solutions.

The Hydrologic Factors That Control Carbonate Hardness In Kalamazoo County Lakes, Southwestern Michigan, Linda Brittain Fenner Aug 1981

The Hydrologic Factors That Control Carbonate Hardness In Kalamazoo County Lakes, Southwestern Michigan, Linda Brittain Fenner

Masters Theses

The range and distribution of carbonate hardness in Kalamazoo County lakes were determined and hydrologic factors thought to control hardness were evaluated. Surface-water samples were collected from thirty- five randomly selected lakes in October, 1980. Carbonate hardness ranged from 16 to 244 mg/1 with 61 percent above 120 mg/1. Ten hydrologic variables were analyzed with respect to lake hardness. Lakes with a surface-water inlet were a ll hard (greater than 180 mg/1) and lakes at least two meters higher than the approximate ground-water table were all relatively soft (less than 100 mg/1). No direct correlations were found between the other …

The Creation Of Holograms Utilizing Fiber Optics, Abdul Rahim Omar Aug 1981

The Creation Of Holograms Utilizing Fiber Optics, Abdul Rahim Omar

Masters Theses

Holography involves the interference of two light beams, namely a reference beam and an object beam. Instead of the conventional method using beam splitters and mirrors to direct the light path, fiber optic bundles are used and high quality holograms have been produced. When fiber optic bundles are used, a spatial filter is not needed to produce a "clean" beam of light for the reference beam. Fiber optic bundles also provide greater flexibility of illumination for the object beam and/or fir the reference beam. Also, it is easier to illuminate the object from many directions. Finally, the distance from the …

Detector Geometry For Cascade Photon Experiments, Roger Minoru Munechika Aug 1981

Detector Geometry For Cascade Photon Experiments, Roger Minoru Munechika

Masters Theses

An observation of cascading optical photons can be used to determine an absolute excitation cross section for the intermediate state without the need of standard lamp calibration. In order to reduce the data an angular correlation function and an angular distribution function must be known. These functions depend on the alignment of the upper excited state and the polarization of the light emitted in the lower part of the cascade. However, at certain angles of observation the values of the required functions are known regardless of the alignment or polarization. A computer search is done to find these angles for …

European Community Seaport Policy: Competition Or Cooperation, Michael J. Giari Jul 1981

European Community Seaport Policy: Competition Or Cooperation, Michael J. Giari

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The objective of this paper is to examine the development of Community port policy and analyze how and why certain factors have impeded progress in this sector of the EC. This paper will test the hypothesis that there are major economic, technological and political forces, outside of the EC, which are moving Community ports towards regional cooperation. Further European integration in a variety of fields, including ports and maritime transportation is not only desirable but inevitable. A new port-related organization to promote and direct this cooperative port effort will be proposed. Geographically this paper will focus on the North Sea …

Diagenesis Of Organic Matter In Las Vegas Bay And Bonelli Bay, Lake Mead, James W. Murray, Carolyn J. Jones, Kathy Kuivila, Jeff Sawlan

Publications (WR)

The interstitial water chemistry of the sediments of Las Vegas Bay and Bonelli Bay in Lake Mead has been studied as part of a comprehensive water quality study of those locations. Pore water and solid phase analyses were completed from four stations in Las Vegas Bay and two stations in Bonelli Bay. At both locations the pore water compositions and organic matter diagenesis in the sediments are dominated by sulfate reduction. This major role of sulfate reduction is unusual for lake sediments and reflects the fact that SO4 is the major anion in the lake water. In addition, gypsum …
