Relationship Of Stream Drainage And Airphoto-Derived Lineaments To Basement Structures In The North Central Virginia Coastal Plain, William F. Mullen Apr 1986

Relationship Of Stream Drainage And Airphoto-Derived Lineaments To Basement Structures In The North Central Virginia Coastal Plain, William F. Mullen

OES Theses and Dissertations

A lineament study was conducted in the north central coastal plain of Virginia using five different data sources; color infrared photo images, rectified stream segments, bouguer gravity anomaly maps, aeromagnetic anomaly maps, and residual magnetic anomaly maps to determine the potential of aerial photographic analysis in the delineation of basement structural features beneath the sedimentary cover of the Virginia Coastal Plain.

Statistical analysis of 1602 airphoto lineaments and 2337 rectified stream segments produced 15 airphoto lineaments and 18 rectified stream segment lineaments in the north central Coastal Plain Province of Virginia. Azimuthal coincidence of these 33 lineaments determined that there …

Patterns Of Diurnal Vertical Distribution And Dispersal-Recruitment Mechanisms Of Decapod Crustacean Larvae And Postlarvae In The Chesapeake Bay, Virginia And Adjacent Offshore Waters, Robert Copeland Maris Apr 1986

Patterns Of Diurnal Vertical Distribution And Dispersal-Recruitment Mechanisms Of Decapod Crustacean Larvae And Postlarvae In The Chesapeake Bay, Virginia And Adjacent Offshore Waters, Robert Copeland Maris

OES Theses and Dissertations

Larval dispersal and subsequent postlarval recruitment are extremely significant processes affecting the maintenance of ecologically and economically important populations of decapod crustaceans. Vertical positioning in the water column plays a major role in the particular strategies of retention or expulsion with immigration.

The present study was undertaken to investigate variations in vertical distribution according to temporal (diurnal), spatial (estuarine, transition, oceanic), ontogenetic (larval stages, postlarvae) and various environmental factors (especially light, temperature, salinity and tides). Also, effects of vertical positioning on dispersal-recruitment were examined.

Three stations were established for the present study: York River mouth (estuarine) (37°12'N, 76°16'W); Chesapeake Bay …

Facies Development And Porosity Relationships In The Dundee Limestone Of Gladwin County, Michigan, Eric Lee Montgomery Apr 1986

Facies Development And Porosity Relationships In The Dundee Limestone Of Gladwin County, Michigan, Eric Lee Montgomery

Masters Theses

The Devonian of the Michigan Basin was a time of transgressive seas and extensive carbonate deposition including coral and stromatoporoid buildups. Deposited during the Middle Devonian, the Dundee Limestone represents deposition in subtidal, intertidal, and restricted environments. The Buckeye Oil Field, located in south-central Gladwin County, is a combined stratigraphic and structural carbonate trap which produces from a series of intertonguing patch reefs, fringing sand bodies, and "intertidal island" fenestral zones. The major reef building organisms include stromatoporoids, corals, calcareous algae, brachiopods, and crinoids, with the stromatoporoids providing the major framework. The patch reef facies is composed of massive stromatoporoid …

Bathymetric Artifacts In Sea Beam Data: How To Recognize Them And What Causes Them, Christian De Moustier, Martin C. Kleinrock Mar 1986

Bathymetric Artifacts In Sea Beam Data: How To Recognize Them And What Causes Them, Christian De Moustier, Martin C. Kleinrock

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Sea Beam multibeam bathymetric data have greatly advanced understanding of the deep seafloor. However, several types of bathymetric artifacts have been identified in Sea Beam's contoured output. Surveys with many overlapping swaths and digital recording on magnetic tape of Sea Beam's 16 acoustic returns made it possible to evaluate actual system performance. The artifacts are not due to the contouring algorithm used. Rather, they result from errors in echo detection and processing. These errors are due to internal factors such as side lobe interference, bottom-tracking gate malfunctions, or external interference from other sound sources (e.g., 3.5 kHz echo sounders or …

Predator Damage Control: 1980 To 1986, Dale A. Wade Mar 1986

Predator Damage Control: 1980 To 1986, Dale A. Wade

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 12th (1986)

This discussion is an update from Wade (1980) which summarized executive and other decisions relating to cancellation of the predacides in 1972. This review continues that summary of major events from January 1980 to the present. Major political factors, predator damage control, and research findings during this period are briefly discussed. A chronology of administrative and judicial decisions and related events is appended (Appendix A).

Opening Remarks—Twelfth Vertebrate Pest Conference, Terrell P. Salmon

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 12th (1986)

On behalf of the Vertebrate Pest Council, welcome to the 12th Vertebrate Pest Conference. Every other year since 1962, the Vertebrate Pest Council has sponsored the conference with the primary objective of bringing individuals interested in vertebrate pest control together to discuss problems and solutions of mutual concern. The main objectives of the conference are:
1. To exchange information on vertebrate pest management and related matters.
2. To advance environmentally safe vertebrate pest management methodologies.
3. To build cooperation with public and private agencies in solving vertebrate pest problems.
4. To consider and promote discussion and interaction among agencies and …

The Mechanical Control Of Bushpig, Potamochoerus Porcus, In Zimbabwe, Michael La Grange Mar 1986

The Mechanical Control Of Bushpig, Potamochoerus Porcus, In Zimbabwe, Michael La Grange

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 12th (1986)

Bushpig, Potamocheorus porcus, occurring naturally in the high rainfall areas of Zimbabwe, have become a major threat to maize producers in the country. Traditional means of control including hunting have been unsuccessful in keeping the numbers to a tolerable level owing to the secretive and cunning nature of the animal. The use of poisons has been discouraged because of indiscriminate use and problems of secondary poisoning, so alternative methods of mechanical control were sought. Several methods evolved during experimentation, producing a strategy to control bushpig throughout the year.

Direct Observation Of Ensemble Averaging Of The Aharonov-Bohm Effect In Normal-Metal Loops, C. P. Umbach, C. Van Haesendonck, R. B. Laibowitz, S. Washburn, Richard A. Webb

Faculty Publications

Aharonov-Bohm magnetoconductance oscillations have been measured in series arrays of 1, 3, 10, and 30 submicron-diameter Ag loops. At constant temperature, the amplitude of the h/e oscillations is observed to decrease as the square root of number of loops, while the amplitude of h/2e conductance oscillations, measured in the same samples, is independent of the number of series loops. This is direct confirmation of the ensemble averaging properties of h/e oscillations in multiloop systems. The amplitude of the h/e oscillations is in good agreement with recent calculations.

A Dna Sequence Analysis Program For The Apple Macintosh, Robert H. Gross Jan 1986

A Dna Sequence Analysis Program For The Apple Macintosh, Robert H. Gross

Dartmouth Scholarship

This paper describes a new set of programs * for analyzing DNA sequences using the Apple Macintosh computer, a computer ideally suited for this kind of analysis. Because of the Macintosh interface and the availability of high quality software-only speech synthesis, these programs are truly easy to use. Instead of typing in commands, the user directs the program by making selections with the mouse, thereby eliminating most typographical and syntax errors. Output options are selected by “pressing buttons” and then clicking “OK” with the mouse. DNA sequences are confirmed by having the program speak them. The high resolution graphics on …
