Multilist And Inverted File System Performance Measurements, Ashok Chandramouli, George Winston Zobrist
Computer Science Technical Reports
This study evaluates the multilist and inverted file systems. It describes the structure of the two file system and then proceeds to investigate the performance. The performance is based on quantitative estimates of space requirements for file system, time to retrieve records, time to insert a record, time to delete a record, time to update a record and time to exhaustively read and reorganize the file system. The study then investigates specific situations in which one file system seems to perform better than the other.

A Proposed C Language Binding For The Graphical Kernel System 3-D, M. G. Bolten, C. Y. Ho
Computer Science Technical Reports
This thesis introduces a proposed C language binding definition for the International standards Organization's draft international standard of the Graphical Kernel System-JD. This work augments the earlier C language binding of the two-dimensional version of the Graphical Kernel System commonly known as GKS. The proposed function interface will provide a basis for, if not a final, C language binding for the three-dimensional version of the Graphical Kernel System.

A Trace Element Geochemical Analysis Of The Lake Ellen Kimberlite, Crystal Falls, Michigan, U.S.A., Michelle Ellen Fults
Masters Theses
The Lake Ellen kimberlite located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan represents a possible bedrock source for the diamonds found in the glacial deposits around the Great Lakes. The purpose of this research was to undertake a geochemical analysis in order to better understand the evolution of the kimberlite body and to elucidate on the garnet xenolith paragenesis.
Both instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and scanning electron microscope analysis (SEM) were utilized in this research. The INAA revealed that with respect to other types of upper mantle rocks, the Lake Ellen kimberlite is enriched in both the light rare earth …

Hypernuclear Photoproduction Via (Γ,K*), Kimberly Ann Hodgkinson
Masters Theses
The nuclear (γ,K*) reaction is studied using plane wave impulse approximation (PWIA) and a distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA), which includes full Coulomb and optical distortions. The model and calculations for each model are presented. For 12C(γ K*)12B, the two approximation methods are compared at 2 energies: 1.47 Gev/c and 1.84GeV/c. 208Pb(γ, K*)208 i s a lso examined. Distortion effects are found to greatly alter the magnitude of the cross sections, but the shape of the angular distributions remains. the same. Conclusions suggest further study.
Theoretical Thermodynamic Properties Of Low Temperature Fluids, Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal
Theoretical Thermodynamic Properties Of Low Temperature Fluids, Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal
Masters Theses
The thermodynamic functions for low temperature fluids are computed using parametric integral equations and perturbation theory. Parametric integral equation N is applied to a low temperature Lennard-Jones gas. It is found that there is no significant improvement over the better known parametric integral equation C. The two parameter integral equation T is applied to a low temperature square-well potential and is found to be unsatisfactory at reduced temperatures of T*= 1.4 and 1.6, but quite accurate at T* = 2.2. The equation T results for T* = 2.2 are used as the reference system in perturbation theory computations. Tables of …

Deposition, Diagenesis, And Porosity Development Of The Middle Devonian, Lucas Formation In The West Branch Oil Field, Ogemaw County, Michigan, Scott Gregory Park
Masters Theses
The Lucas Formation in the West Branch Oil Field contains over 1000 feet of carbonates and evaporites deposited in restricted marine environments. Deposition ranged from a tidal flat environment (Richfield Member) to subaqueous basin central type deposition (Iutzi and Horner Members).
Early diagenesis of the Lucas Formation carbonates included dolomitization and related porosity development in certain depositional facies where physiochemical conditions were favorable. Significant porosity and permeability reduction occurred during burial resulting from anhydrite, celestite, and halite cementation. Calcite pseudopar and microspar (a neomorphic product) also reduced porosity.
Hydrocarbon production from the Lucas Formation in the West Branch Field is …

The Onset Of Spring Melt In First-Year Ice Regions Of The Arctic As Determined From Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer Data For 1979 And 1980, Mark R. Anderson
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Sea ice ablation is an important physical process affecting the global climate system. During the Arctic melt season, rapid changes occur in both sea ice surface conditions and the extent of ice. These changes alter the albedo and vary the surface energy budget. Understanding variations in Arctic sea ice is critical for global climate studies. This paper investigates the spring onset of melt in the Arctic seasonal sea ice zone through analysis of melt signatures derived from Nimbus 7 scanning multichannel microwave radiometer data. Satellite-derived melt signatures, determined by 18- and 37-GHz vertical brightness temperatures, are associated with the initial …
Equivalence Of Donor And Acceptor Fits To Temperature-Dependent Hall Data: General Case, David C. Look
Equivalence Of Donor And Acceptor Fits To Temperature-Dependent Hall Data: General Case, David C. Look
Physics Faculty Publications
Recently, it was shown that the usual statistical-mechanical formulation used to fit carrier concentration versus temperature data cannot distinguish between the donor or acceptor nature of one single-charge-state center. Here we generalize that result to include any number of donor and acceptor centers, of arbitrary charge multiplicity, and also show how that by fitting one particular case (e.g., every center assumed to be a donor), all of the other possible cases can be immediately solved by inspection.

Data acquisition is important in geotechnical and hydrological field investigations. Commercially available data acquisitions systems are often not well suited to field use, and can be costly. An alternative to buying a data acquisition system is to build one, and recent advances in computer micro-chip technology have made it easy to understand, design and build simple data acquisition devices.
The design of a data acquisition system developed at the University of Waterloo, along with an example of its use, is discussed in the paper. The intent was to sample 16 channels at 12 bit resolution for prolonged periods under adverse …

State/Federal/Private Cooperative Relationships In Wildlife Damage Control, Charles D. Kelly
State/Federal/Private Cooperative Relationships In Wildlife Damage Control, Charles D. Kelly
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 3rd (1987)
During my 30 year tenure as Alabama's Game and Fish Division Director it has been very gratifying to witness the successful restoration of wildlife populations. We have been able to allow long hunting seasons with liberal bag limits for our popular game species. However, as conditions improved from a recreational standpoint we also experienced an escalation of wildlife damage complaints. Every member of the Alabama Game and Fish Division staff is involved to some extent in answering calls, providing information and otherwise assisting with resolution of wildlife damage complaints. We do not have the resources required to actively pursue every …

Closing Remarks, James E. Miller
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 3rd (1987)
The need for professionalism in wildlife damage prevention and control is more important today than ever before. It will be even more important in the future as we are faced with increasing interaction between people and their interests which includes many different perceptions about wildlife. Wildlife professionals must change their philosophy regarding communication with the public about both the positive and negative impacts of wildlife. We can no longer afford the luxury, if indeed we ever could, of avoiding people and their perceptions about wildlife. We must provide scientific, biologically and ecologically sound information in a form which the public …

Great-Tailed Grackle Predation On South Texas Citrus: (Identifying A Unique Problem), John Hobbs, Fred G. Leon Iii
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
The December 1983 freeze inflicted tremendous damage to the South Texas citrus groves and reduced tree numbers by approximately fifty percent. Additionally, it is believed that Great-tailed grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus) populations have increased over the past few years. With decreased citrus acreage and increased grackle numbers, the severe negative effects are economically significant to the Texas citrus industry.
Grackle damage to grapefruit and oranges differs in type and economic importance. The first is "cosmetic" in nature, small pecks or scratches on the fruit skin, and downgrades the fruit, reducing its value. The second is actual crop loss due …

The Critter Control Concept Approaches Of A Firm Specializing In Nuisance Wildlife Control, Lynn Braband, Kevin Clark
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 3rd (1987)
The private sector has been involved in certain aspects of nuisance wildlife control for some time. Examples include commensal rodent control by pest control companies, capture of nuisance furbearers by trappers, and repair of structural damage by carpenters. Social trends, such as increased urbanization, increased population of certain wildlife species, and decreased government funding have combined to provide increased opportunity and need for the private sector in nuisance wildlife control. Critter Control, Inc. has sought to bring an integrated and specialized approach to nuisance wildlife control. Our general approach includes consultation on the nature of the nuisance situation, removal of …
Public Tolerance Of Deer In A Suburban Environment: Implications For Management And Control, Nancy A. Connelly, Daniel J. Decker, Sam Wear
Public Tolerance Of Deer In A Suburban Environment: Implications For Management And Control, Nancy A. Connelly, Daniel J. Decker, Sam Wear
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 3rd (1987)
A mail survey of residents in suburban northern Westchester County, New York was conducted to determine the nature and extent of deer damage in the county, the importance of deer damage relative to other deer-human interactions, and residents' perceptions of costs and benefits associated with the deer herd. The estimated cost of damage to plantings was quite high, $6.4 million to $9.5 million (depending on the type of assumptions concerning non-respondents). Most respondents used some form of deer damage control (estimated to cost $1.2 to $1.8 million/year), but few people reported their problems to officials. Although these costs were high, …

Urban Gray Squirrel Damage And Population Management: A Case History, J. Hadidian, D. Manski, V. Flyger, C. Cox, G. Hodge
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 3rd (1987)
Lafayette Park, a 3.0 hectare national park located across the street from the White House in Washington D.C., has had a gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) density as high as 50 animals/hectare. In recent years this large population caused significant damage to mature trees and other vegetation. In keeping with the legislative mandate to protect and preserve the historic landscape in Lafayette Park, the National Park Service implemented a squirrel management program following an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. The population was studied and monitored to determine the ecological bases for high squirrel numbers. Action was taken through a …

Research Needs In Wildlife Damage Control, James E. Miller
Research Needs In Wildlife Damage Control, James E. Miller
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 3rd (1987)
The wildlife profession has achieved great success in habitat management, game population restoration, and in learning to manage wildlife populations for public use and enjoyment during the past 50 years. However, a number of wildlife species have become serious problems to agricultural profitability and to natural resources managers in recent years. These problem situations may well focus on a lack of appropriate research or perhaps just not keeping pace. For the most part, wildlife research for the prevention and control of wildlife damage has been latently reactive, rather than proactive. Obviously, one of the difficulties continues to be, how to …

Status Of Mesurol® As A Bird Repellent For Cherries And Other Fruit Crops, Mark E. Tobin, Richard A. Dolbeer
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 3rd (1987)
A single application of Mesurol at 1.5 Ib (Al) /ac to ripening cherries reduced bird damage in a field test in the mid-Hudson Valley of New York, 1986. Treated trees averaged 8.9% damage compared to 17.5% damage for untreated trees. An average of 7.4 birds flew into treated blocks per 15-min count versus an average of 19.8 birds that flew into control blocks. These results support the various evaluations over the past 15 years of Mesurol as a bird repellent for fruit crops. The consensus of these tests is that Mesurol often provides an effective nonlethal means of reducing conflicts …

Wolf, Golden Eagle, And Coyote Problems In Montana, B.W. O'Gara, W. Rightmire
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 3rd (1987)
The average annual reported loss of sheep and lambs to predators in Montana from 1982 through 1986 was 46,000 animals worth $1,980,000. During recent years, coyote predation has been the single most important cause of death for lambs. Coyotes accounted for 80% of the predator kills during 1985 and 72% during 1986, and 8,321 coyotes were killed by ADC during those 2 years. Aerial gunning accounted for more than half of the kills. During the first year of a study on a ranch in western Montana without predator control, coyotes killed 8% of the ewes and 27% of lambs. Predation …
