Effect Of Wet Tropospheric Path Delays On Estimation Of Geodetic Baselines In The Gulf Of California Using The Global Positioning System, David M. Tralli, Timothy H. Dixon, Scott A. Stephens
Effect Of Wet Tropospheric Path Delays On Estimation Of Geodetic Baselines In The Gulf Of California Using The Global Positioning System, David M. Tralli, Timothy H. Dixon, Scott A. Stephens
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Geodetic baseline measurements using the Global Positioning System (GPS) were acquired in the Gulf of California between Loreto and Cabo San Lucas in Baja California and Mazatlan on the mainland of Mexico. Tropospheric water vapor content was high during the experiment, typically yielding wet path delays in excess of 20 cm at zenith. Surface meteorological (SM) and water vapor radiometer (WVR) measurements were recorded at each site, providing independent means of calibrating the GPS signal for the wet tropospheric path delay. Residual wet delays at zenith are estimated as constants and also as first-order exponentially correlated stochastic processes. In addition, …
Decreased Triiodothyronine Binding To The Hepatic Nuclear Thyroid Hormone Receptor In The Diabetic Mouse, Thomas J. Dewind
Decreased Triiodothyronine Binding To The Hepatic Nuclear Thyroid Hormone Receptor In The Diabetic Mouse, Thomas J. Dewind
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The diabetic C57BL/KsJ-db m mouse has abnormal thyroid hormone levels and indications of thyroid hormone resistance. To investigate the basis of these abnormalities, the hepatic nuclear thyroid hormone receptor was extracted with 0.4 M KCl, 1.1 mM MgCl2, 20 mM Tris/HCl, pH 7.9 from hepatocyte nuclei of normal C57BL/KsJ, heterozygous C57BL/KsJ-db m (db/m), and diabetic C57BL/KsJ-db m (db/db) mice. Normal and heterozygous mice were grouped together as the controls. Triiodothyronine (T3) binding studies at 4°C using nitrocellulose filtration to separate free T3 from receptor bound T3 demonstrated an …

Ferroelectric Nematic Liquid Crystals: Realizability And Molecular Constraints, Rolfe G. Petschek
Faculty Scholarship
There is no fundamental reason that fluids should not be ferroelectric. However, the only knownferroelectric fluids are chiral smectic-C liquid crystals and related structures. We examine the possibility that molecules with permanent dipole moments can form a ferroelectric nematic phase, the least ordered conceivable ferroelectric phase. We show that reasonable electric dipole interactions between diskshaped molecules may lead to such a phase, and calculate the phase diagram using mean-field theory. Some constraints on the constituent molecules are discussed.

Common Characteristics Of Paired Volcanoes In Northern Central America, S. P. Halsort, William I. Rose
Common Characteristics Of Paired Volcanoes In Northern Central America, S. P. Halsort, William I. Rose
Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications
Four pairs of active volcanoes along the northern Central American volcanic front have erupted basalt-andesite magmas that show consistent intrapair behavioral and compositional differences. These differences are found in records of volcanic activity and complete major and minor element data on over 200 samples. From northwest to southeast along the volcanic front the four volcano pairs are Cerro Quemado-Santa María, Tolimán-Atitlán, Acatenango-Fuego, and Santa Ana-Izalco. The volcano pair relations help explain compositional differences, apart from those reflecting variation in crustal thickness of about 15 km along the volcanic front, providing insight into across-arc variations and closely spaced subvolcanic plumbing systems. …

The March–April 1986 eruption of Augustine Volcano, Alaska, provided an opportunity to directly measure the flux of gas, aerosol, and ash particles during explosive eruption. Most previous direct measurements of volcanic emission rates are on plumes from fuming volcanoes or on very small eruption clouds. Direct measurements during explosive activity are needed to understand the scale relationships between passive degassing or small eruption plumes and highly explosive events. Conditions on April 3, 1986 were ideal: high winds, clear visibility, moderate activity. Three measurements were made: 1) an airborne correlation spectrometer (Cospec) provided mass flux rates of SO2; 2) …
Use Of Economic Instruments In Biodiversity Conservation Projects: The Sustainability Of Projects In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Amy Lyons
Honors Theses
Under what conditions do biodiversity conservation projects that use economic incentives promote the most significant and sustainable biodiversity protection? The study of how nations can best invest their resources to promote conservation while simultaneously encouraging a sustainable form of economic development has recently become a major focus for ecologically rich, less-developed countries. There have been many innovative and successful attempts at combining biodiversity protection with economic development, and others that have done more harm than good. Since there is no guaranteed recipe for a successful project, it is crucial to examine projects in detail to discern which type of project …

Computer Science Technical Reports
A fully automated, computer controlled plant has been designed specifically for safe removal of plastic bonded explosives (PBX) from obsolete military munitions. This PBX washout plant consists of a two stage delivery system and robotically operated high pressure waterjet lance. The assigned task was to develop control packages for each component.
The first stage of the delivery system is a battery operated overhead trolley. Its control package consist of a dedicated computer, DC motor and custom positioning subprograms. The dedicated computer communicates through an infrared link to the operator's computer. This link was developed due to requirements of a hazardous …

Projectile-Charge Dependence Of Ejected-Electron Spectra, V. D. Irby, Timothy J. Gay, J. Wm. Edwards, E. B. Hale, M. L. Mckenzie, R. E. Olson
Timothy J. Gay Publications
We have studied H++He and 3He+++He ionizing collisions at intermediate energies (60 to 120 keV/amu) and have observed a significant shift in the velocity position of the maxima in forward-ejected electron spectra when changing projectiles from protons to α particles. In ionizing collisions, a large portion of the ejected electrons are stranded near the transitory equiforce, or saddle point, position between the target ion and receding projectile. The shift in the electron spectra maxima to smaller velocities, due to changing projectiles from protons to α particles, is consistent with the shift in the saddle-point velocity …
Arcata Sports Complex Project, Susie Van Kirk
Arcata Sports Complex Project, Susie Van Kirk
Susie Van Kirk Papers
The City of Arcata is developing a sports complex, including playing fields and structures, on its property lying south and west of 7th and Union Streets. Prior to the commencement of construction, an archaeological investigation was performed to determine the extent and significance of a previously-identified prehistoric site. In addition to artifacts associated with the prehistoric time period, historic artifacts were also encountered. To assist in the evaluation of these artifacts, research of the historic component of the property was undertaken. This report discusses the historic environment and land use, land ownerships, biographical information on some of the families associated …
Quaternary Geology And Tectonic Geomorphology Of The Pocatello Valley Area, Idaho-Utah, John D. Garr
Quaternary Geology And Tectonic Geomorphology Of The Pocatello Valley Area, Idaho-Utah, John D. Garr
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Pocatello Valley in southeastern Idaho and northern Utah is a structural and topographic basin bounded on all sides by mountains composed of Paleozoic platform carbonates and elastics. In the late Pleistocene it contained pluvial Lake Utaho, which, prior to 1981, was considered to have been an arm of Lake Bonneville. This study corroborates the finding of Currey (1981) that the two lakes were separate.
The Quaternary deposits examined in this study are divided into two broad groups: those that were deposited prior to the last pluvial lake cycle, and those that were deposited during and after the pluvial lake maximum, …
Effects Of Eddy Viscosity And Thermal Conduction And Coriolis Force In The Dynamics Of Gravity Wave Driven Fluctuations In The Oh Nightglow, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.
Effects Of Eddy Viscosity And Thermal Conduction And Coriolis Force In The Dynamics Of Gravity Wave Driven Fluctuations In The Oh Nightglow, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.
Publications
Recently, Walterscheid et al. (1987) have described a dynamical-chemical model of wave-driven fluctuations in the OH nightglow which incorporated a five-reaction photochemical scheme and the dynamics of linearized acoustic-gravity waves in an isothermal, motionless atmosphere. The intensity oscillation (δI) about the time-averaged intensity (I0) and the temperature oscillation (δT) about the time-averaged temperature (T0) were related by means of the complex ratio η ≡ (δI/I0)/(δT/T0). One of the main conclusions of their work was that the inclusion of dynamical effects is absolutely essential for …

Summary Abstract: Formation Of Cr2N Overlayers On A Fe/Cr{110} Crystal, H. Ruppender, M. Grunze, Peter A. Dowben
Peter Dowben Publications
In this communication we summarize our experiments related to the formation of chromium surface nitride layers on a Fe72Cr28{110} surface. These surface nitrides were produced by (i) exposure to molecular nitrogen, (ii) exposure to ammonia, and (iii) segregation of nitrogen to the crystal surface. It was found in all cases that the nitrogen concentration in the selvedge scales linearly with the chromium concentration and that chromium segregation is the rate determining step for the formation of a surface nitride.
Modal Interference Techniques For Strain Detection In Few-Mode Optical Fibers, Bradley D. Duncan
Modal Interference Techniques For Strain Detection In Few-Mode Optical Fibers, Bradley D. Duncan
Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications
Interference between the modes of an optical fiber results in specific intensity patterns which can be modulated as a function of disturbances in the optical fiber system. These modulation effects are a direct result of the difference in propagation constants of the constituent modes. In this presentation it is shown how the modulated intensity patterns created by the interference of specific mode groups in few-mode optical fibers (V < 5.0) can be used to detect strain. A detailed discussion of the modal phenomena responsible for the observed strain induced pattern modulation is given and it is shown that strain detection sensitivities on the order of 10-9 can be expected. Data taken during the evaluation of an actual experimental strain detection system based on the developed theory is also presented.

There are two approaches to solve computational problems in a microcomputer environment:
- Non-database approach: uses a high level programming language with non-database files as input and/or output files.
- Database approach: uses the programming language embedded in the micro Data Base Management System(DBMS), with the database defined by the integrated database definition language as input and/or output files.
Adopting the appropriate approach in any single application may save cost and time. This paper compares the two different approaches while solving the same Control Section (CSECT) Interaction Hierarchy problem and suggests which to use when.
