Frightening Methods And Devices/Stimuli To Prevent Mammal Damage-- A Review, Ann E. Koehler, Rex E. Marsh, Terrell P. Salmon
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 14th (1990)
Various frightening stimuli, primarily visual and acoustic, have been used to prevent or alleviate damage by depredating mammals (e.g., deer (Odocoileus spp.), raccoons (Procyon lotor), tree squirrels (Sciurus spp.), coyotes (Canis latrans). Frightening methods are most appropriate for use where a crop or situation needs protection from pest mammals for only a period of a few days or weeks. The ability of animals to habituate to such stimuli limits their long-term usefulness. Against nocturnal species, various types of lights and noisemakers are the most useful. Combining acoustic and visual stimuli can enhance effectiveness, while …

Differential Toxicity And Taste Aversion To Strychnine Of Three Subspecies Of The California Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus Beecheyi), Walter E. Howard, Stephen D. Palmateer, Rex E. Marsh
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 14th (1990)
Three subspecies of the California ground squirrel (Spermophilus beecheyi) were studied. In the first test of Experiment 1, Beechey (S. b. beecheyi), Douglas (S. b. douglasii), and, for comparative purposes, Sierra (S. b. sierrae) ground squirrels were each offered a drinking tube containing one of three H20 solutions of strychnine sulfate (0.01, 0.05, or 0.5%) after being deprived of water for 23 hr. In Test 2 the survivors of Test 1 were offered for 24 hr a free choice of distilled water and two of the above concentrations of strychnine …

Nitrate Concentrations Of Ground Water From Limestone And Dolomitic Aquifers In The Northeastern Washington County Area, Arkansas, Kenneth F. Steele, William K. Mccalister
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
The Ozark Region of Arkansas is a major poultry-producing area of the United States. Large quantities of poultry waste are spread as fertilizer on thin soils of pastureland overlying limestone and dolomitic aquifers. Because these aquifers provide domestic water supplies for the rural population and are susceptible to contamination from surface water, there is concern that nitrate leached from poultry litter is polluting the ground water. In response to this concern, well water from a major poultry-producing area was compared with that from a forested area in the northeastern Washington County area, Arkansas. Although nitrate concentration of the well water …

Juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. (ca. 80 mm S.L.) stocked into mid-elevation reservoirs in Utah are vulnerable to predation from piscivorous fish and birds. I determined how effectively juvenile trout used cover to avoid these predators by using direct observations (snorkel transects) on habitat selection in two reservoirs. Observations of juvenile trout were conducted within five weeks of stocking in 1988 and 1989. During the day juvenile trout were abundant in complex inshore habitats. Juvenile trout actively fed during the day but the time of peak feeding was variable. Large Daphnia made of > 95% of the diet of juvenile trout. …

Trophic Interactions Between Fish And Invertebrates In Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Charles P. Hawkins
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
An intensive study of the limnology, invertebrates and fishes of Bear Lake was conducted in 1987 in order to define the productivity and food web of the community. Limno10gica1 parameters and invertebrates were measured at approximately monthly intervals while fish distribution and feeding was analyzed in February, June, August, and October. Samples were collected at three to eight stations along a transect running from the shallow littoral area on the west side of the lake, to the deep profundal zone.

The CASA UNO GPS (Global Positioning System) experiment (January-February 1988) has provided the first epoch baseline measurements for the study of plate motions and crustal deformation in and around the North Andes. Two dimensional horizontal baseline repeatabilities are as good as 5 parts in 108 for short baselines (100–1000 km), and better than 3 parts in 108 for long baselines (>1000 km). Vertical repeatabilities are typically 4–6 cm, with a weak dependence on baseline length. The expected rate of plate convergence across the Colombia Trench is 6–8 cm/yr, which should be detectable by the repeat experiment planned …

The CASA UNO Global Positioning System (GPS) experiment (January-February 1988) included an extended tracking network which covered three continents in addition to the network of scientific interest in Central and South America. The repeatability of long baselines (400-1000 km) in South America is improved by up to a factor of two in the horizontal vector baseline components by using tracking stations in the Pacific and Europe to supplement stations in North America. In every case but one, the differences between the mean solutions obtained using different tracking networks was equal to or smaller than day-to-day rms repeatabilities for the same …

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
High quality forages have been the "frontline" for successful horse and cattle operations for years. In Kentucky, we have grown, harvested and stored hay on the farm for as long as we have farmed. It is one of our principal forms of overwinter feed and has been grown primarily as an on-the-farm feed source.

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
The losses from harvest to feed bunk are undoubtedly greater with hay than any other crop grown by the American farmer. The economic implications of reducing losses through improved harvest technologies is staggering when one considers the 75-85 million tons of alfalfa harvested out of the total 140-145 million tons of hay produced annually in the United States.

Alfalfa Producers: Do You Really Know How Good Your Alfalfa Is? Forage Analysis: Importance And Interpretation, Jimmy C. Henning
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
Forages make up over 75% of the diet of all cattle and are the basis of cow-calf industry in the midwest. However, a recent survey of over 1000 livestock producers in Missouri revealed that only 5.6 % had ever had their hay tested. They gave several reasons for why they had not tested hay (Table 1). By a large margin, the greatest reason for not testing was that they did not see a need. This fact highlights the purpose of this paper and presentation at the 10th Annual Kentucky Alfalfa Conference. This paper will explain the terms used in …

Nematic Electroclinic Effect, Zili Li, Gregory A. Dilisi, Rolfe G. Petschek, Charles Rosenblatt
Faculty Scholarship
A tilt of the principal axis of the optical dielectric tensor linear in a transverse electric field was observed for a surface-stabilized nematic liquid crystal. The electroclinic coefficient d/dE was observed to increase rapidly on approaching the nematicsmectic-A phase transition from above. This was not expected, and indicates that the incipient translational order is important to the electroclinic effect. The data are consistent with a critical exponent only over a narrow range of temperature, and in this range the apparent exponent is not that expected from theory. In addition, dielectric data are presented for this transition, and birefringence results are …

Molecular beam epitaxial GaAs layers of electron concentration 1.69×1017 cm−3, and various thicknesses d=0.25, 0.50, 1.00, and 2.00 μm, have been grown on semi‐insulating GaAs substrates and characterized by the Hall effect and capacitance‐voltage (C‐V) techniques. A plot of sheet Hall concentration ns vs d gives accurate values of (ND−NA) and (ws+wi), the sum of the surface and interface free‐carrier depletion widths, respectively. The C‐V measurements verify the value of ND−NA …

Draft- Nitrogen Loading And Ambient Chlorophyll-A In Hillsborough Bay (Tampa Bay), Florida: An Eutrophication Management Strategy, J.O. R. Johansson
Reports
The present report examines the past and current relationship between nitrogen loadings and ambient chlorophyll-a eutrophic subdivision of Tampa Bay (Task 1). A management strategy for eutrophication abatement, involving the reduction of present nitrogen loadings to levels which will sustain the desirable chlorophyll-a concentration and support persistent seagrass growth in the near future, is also presented for Hillsborough Bay (Task 3). The urgent need for a comprehensive long-term water quality and loading source monitoring program, specifically for Hillsborough Bay, is also discussed (Task 4).

An Abstract Data Model For The Idef0 Graphical Analysis Language, Gerald R. Morris, Thomas C. Hartrum, Mark A. Roth
AFIT Documents
IDEF0 is the United States Air Force's ICAM (Integrated Computer Aided Manufacturing) Definition Method Zero graphical analysis language, a subset of Ross' Structured Analysis (SA) language. The language is also an excellent methodology for performing a requirements-phase analysis for any software development project. We present an abstract data model for IDEF0 using entity-relationship diagrams. This model helps to mitigate some of the ambiguities inherent in IDEF0. The model is divided into two parts representing the analysis data (the essential data model) and the graphical data (the drawing data model). This dual modeling approach allows for the …

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Typically, those who discuss Risk management envision a two-step process wherein, first, Risk is more or less objectively appraised and, second, the acceptability of those Risks is subjectively evaluated. This paper questions the philosophical foundations of that approach.

Pioneers Of Modern Geography: Translations Pertaining To German Geographers Of The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Robert C. West
GreyZone
This collection of English translations samples the writings and/or critiques thereon of six important German geographers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: those of August Meitzen, Eduard Hahn, Otto Schliiter, Alfred Hettner, Siegfried Passarge, and Karl Sapper. Each of these scholars influenced in various ways the course of modem geographical thinking and instruction in German universities, and their methodologies were also adopted in part by professional geographers in other European countries and in the United States. Four of them—Hahn, Schliiter, Hettner and Passarge— were students of Ferdinand von Richthofen, often considered the “father” of professional geography in Germany. …

Mapping Finite Element Graphs On Hypercubes, Yeh-Ching Chung, Sanjay Ranka
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports
In parallel computing, it is important to map a parallel program onto a parallel computer such that the total execution time of a parallel program is minimized. In general, a parallel program and a parallel computer can be represented by a task graph (TG) and a processor graph (PG), respectively. For a TG, nodes represent tasks of a parallel program and edges denote the data communication needed between tasks. The weights associated with nodes and edges represent the computational load and communication cost, respectively. For a PG, nodes and edges denote processors and communication channels, respectively. By using the graph …

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
In the past few years considerable demand for user oriented multimedia information systems has developed. These systems must provide a rich set of functionality so that new, complex, and interesting applications can be addressed. This places considerable importance on the management of diverse data types including text, images, audio and video. These requirements generate the need for a new generation of distributed heterogeneous multimedia database systems. In this paper we identify a set of functional requirements for a multimedia server considering database management, object synchronization and integration, and multimedia query processing. A generalization of the requirements to a distributed system …
