Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan
Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan
E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)
Scientists face many challenges in harnessing web-based resources. Information overload, misinformation, fees, poorly designed navigation, and loss of browsability all hamper the scientist searcher. In addition, many scientists rely on only one or two databases and often miss unique information that is available through other sources. Librarians can team up with scientists to develop strategies to overcome the challenges of web-based information. For example, a librarian can teach effective information seeking techniques, including how to use controlled vocabularies, how to evaluate information on the web, and how to complement web-based resources with print resources. Librarians can also help scientists to …

Theses & Honors Papers
Everything we do to the land, air, and water affects our quality of life on this planet. Since the beginning of time, human beings have generated and discarded trash. As the pollution of the United States continues to grow so have the problems with our nation's landfills. Americans throw away an average of 3.5 pounds of garbage per person each day, or approximately 160 million tons of it per year. Studies have been conducted that show that the majority of our trash consists of paper, yard trimmings, metal, plastics, glass, food wastes, rubber, leather, textiles, and miscellaneous inorganic materials.

Hill Air Force Base: Archaeological Monitoring Of Target And Access Road Development For The Ts-5-2 Target Area, Utah Test And Training Range, Tooele County, Utah, Daron Duke
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, contracted with Geo-Marine, Inc., to conduct archaeologial monitoring for a U.S. Air Force Air Combat Command (ACC) project on the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR), which is under the jurisdiction of Hill Air Force Base and located in Tooele County, western Utah. Monitoring of ground disturbing activities associated with ACC development of Target TS-5-2 and a 2.5-mile dirt access road on the TS-5 (Wild Isle) area of UTTR was undertaken in January 2001. Additional target and access road development monitoring was conducted in July and August of 2001, and the …
Selection Of Nesting Habitat By Sharptailed Grouse In The Nebraska Sandhills, Bart L. Prose, Brian S. Cade, Dale Hein
Selection Of Nesting Habitat By Sharptailed Grouse In The Nebraska Sandhills, Bart L. Prose, Brian S. Cade, Dale Hein
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
We evaluated nesting habitat selection (disproportionate use compared to availability) by plains sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus jamesi) on rangelands grazed by cattle (Bas taurus) relative to height, density, and heterogeneity of residual herbaceous vegetation remaining from previous growing seasons. Residual cover is critical for nesting sharp-tailed grouse and can be lacking on grazed rangelands. Aerial photography and a geographic information system were used to analyze residual cover height classes and several measures of residual cover heterogeneity in nest (n = 38) and random (n = 38) plots. Height classes corresponded to visual obstruction readings (YORs), the …
Creating In Our Own Image: Artificial Intelligence And The Image Of God, Noreen L. Herzfeld
Creating In Our Own Image: Artificial Intelligence And The Image Of God, Noreen L. Herzfeld
Theology Faculty Publications
There is remarkable convergence between twentieth-century interpretations of the image of God (imago Dei), what it means for human beings to be created in God's image, and approaches toward creating in our own image in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Both fields have viewed the intersection between God and humanity or humanity and computers in terms of either (1) a property or set of properties such as intelligence, (2) the functions we engage in or are capable of, or (3) the relationships we establish and maintain. Each of these three approaches reflects a different understanding of what …
Compositional Trends And Spatial Patterns Over A Quarter Century: Forest Dynamics Of Dobbs Park, Indiana, Nancy Hoalst Pullen
Compositional Trends And Spatial Patterns Over A Quarter Century: Forest Dynamics Of Dobbs Park, Indiana, Nancy Hoalst Pullen
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thirty-five permanent plots were reexamined to identify and describe the spatial and temporal characteristics of Dobbs Park, an isolated old-growth forest stand in westcentral Indiana. The 3.6 ha stand was resurveyed in summer 2000, with all stems greater than 10 cm dbh measured, and accessions and deaths recorded. The results are compared to original data collected in summer 1974, with compositional and spatial patterns identified via GIS and spatial analysis. The stand has declined slightly in density from 342 stems/ha to 333.15 stems/hectare (-2.6%) while basal area (dominance) for the stand has increased from 23.6 m2/ha to 25.8 m2/ha (+8.8%) …

Inconsistency Of Resampling Algorithms For High Breakdown Regression Estimators And A New Algorithm, Douglas M. Hawkins, David J. Olive
Inconsistency Of Resampling Algorithms For High Breakdown Regression Estimators And A New Algorithm, Douglas M. Hawkins, David J. Olive
Articles and Preprints
Since high breakdown estimators are impractical to compute exactly in large samples, approximate algorithms are used. The algorithm generally produces an estimator with a lower consistency rate and breakdown value than the exact theoretical estimator. This discrepancy grows with the sample size, with the implication that huge computations are needed for good approximations in large high-dimensioned samples
The workhorse for HBE has been the ‘elemental set’, or ‘basic resampling’ algorithm. This turns out to be completely ineffective in high dimensions with high levels of contamination. However, enriching it with a “concentration” step turns it into a method that is able …

Applications Of Robust Distances For Regression, David J. Olive
Applications Of Robust Distances For Regression, David J. Olive
Articles and Preprints
The DD plot, introduced by Rousseeuw and Van Driessen (1999), is a plot of classical vs robust Mahalanobis distances: MDi vs RDi. The DD plot can be used as a diagnostic for multivariate normality and elliptical symmetry, and to assess the success of numerical transformations towards elliptical symmetry. In the regression context, many procedures can be adversely affected if strong nonlinearities are present in the predictors. Even if strong nonlinearities are present, the robust distances can be used to help visualize important regression models such as generalized linear models.

This project provides lessons and activities for the integration of environmental education throughout the family and consumer science curriculum. The project reflects the most current standards including the Washington State Environmental Education Guidelines and Essential Academic Learning Requirements, as well as the Family and Consumer Science National Standards. Many appropriate areas of implementation were discovered in the review of literature. The lessons and activities presented in this project are informed by the literature and are, subsequently, diverse and desirable for family and consumer science education. Each lesson or activity includes detailed information on which standards they reflect as well as …
Book Review - Prairie Birds: Fragile Splendor In The Great Plains, Neil P. Bernstein
Book Review - Prairie Birds: Fragile Splendor In The Great Plains, Neil P. Bernstein
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Paul A. Johnsguard has established himself as one of the most prolific natural history writers in the recent past. Indeed, before I could finish reading Prairie Birds, the University of Kansas Press sent me The Nature of Nebraska, also by Johnsguard. These works follow closely after This Fragile Land, A Natural History of the Nebraska Sandhills (1995), which I favorably reviewed a few years ago, also about the Great Plains. It goes without saying, that there is a fair amount of overlap in these works, both in the subject matter and the illustrations. Rather than criticize the overlap among these …
