"Obeying A Rule": Ludwig Wittgenstein And The Foundations Of Set Theory, Giorgio T. Bagni
"Obeying A Rule": Ludwig Wittgenstein And The Foundations Of Set Theory, Giorgio T. Bagni
The Mathematics Enthusiast
In this paper we propose some reflections on Wittgenstein’s ideas about grammar and rules; then we shall consider some consequences of these for the foundations of set theory and, in particular, for the introduction of major concepts of set theory in education. For instance, a community of practice can decide to follow a particular rule that forbids the derivation of arbitrary sentences from a contradiction: since, according to Radford’s perspective, knowledge is the result of thinking, and thinking is a cognitive social praxis, the mentioned choice can be considered as a form of real and effective knowledge.

Beginning in the late 1980s, large groups of previously unidentified killer whales (Orcinus orca) were sighted off the west coast of Vancouver Island and in the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia. Scientists working in this region produced two killer whale photo-identification catalogues that included both transient (mammal-eating) whales and 65 individual whales that investigators believed represented a distinct killer whale community (Ford et al. 1992, Heise et al. 1993). It was thought that these killer whales maintained a generally offshore distribution and were provisionally termed “offshores”; a term that has since been used as a population identifier for …

Mathematical Cognition And The Final Report Of The National Mathematics Advisory Panel: A Critical, Cultural-Historical Activity Theoretic Analysis, Wolff-Michael Roth
The Mathematics Enthusiast
In its Final Report, the National Mathematics Advisory Panel has depicted a stark image of mathematical competencies and achievement among U.S. students. The Advisory Panel notes the lack of research with “truly scientific” rigor and, mentioning Vygotsky’s cultural-historical activity theory in passing, suggests its utility to be untested. In reading the report, I noted the limited understanding of the mathematics education literature it articulates and a complete failure to draw on established, “tried and proven,” theory and practice in mathematics education founded upon an encompassing culturalhistorical activity theory. This theory is comprehensive and encompassing, because it retains activity in its …

In 1957, the director of one of the major math curriculum projects in the UK was quoted in a newspaper as saying: "Up went Sputnik and down came all the pure mathematicians saying we must do sets and be saved". The corresponding message from the National Math Panel Final Report is "Up went the economic performance of China and India and down came all the pure mathematicians saying we must do algebra and be saved".

An Assessment Of Local People’S Opinions Of Community Conservation Initiatives In Relation To Livelihood Strategies In Kenya, Jill Mechtenberg
An Assessment Of Local People’S Opinions Of Community Conservation Initiatives In Relation To Livelihood Strategies In Kenya, Jill Mechtenberg
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Abstract This paper analyzed the changing livelihood strategies in Kenya, and their cultural impacts via a literature review. I then combined this understanding with the data I collected while in Kenya to examine the opinions local people have of community conservation initiatives, based on their changing livelihood strategies. I expected to find that the following factors would have an affect on the opinions local community members have of community conservation initiatives: livelihood strategy, gender, ethnicity, whether or not they believe the distribution of benefits coming from wildlife conservation is equitable, what issues they would like to see improved within community …

Hazard Adaptations Along The Ohio River: A Case Study Of Bushman's Lake, Clark County, Indiana, Jennifer L. Lathem
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hazard researchers define a hazard as a threat to people and their belongings (Cutter 2001). An adaptation, for the purposes of this research, is any alteration, physical or behavioral, made by a person in which the person is better able to survive in their "hazardous" natural environment. The challenge facing individuals and communities is the ability to adapt to these hazards so as to continue with normal everyday life. People living near a waterway are faced with flooding, which becomes a hazard when it alters everyday social structures. The purpose of this study is to identify flood hazard adaptations in …

Traditional Natural Resource Use And Development In Northeast Thailand, Christie Moulton
Senior Honors Projects
This paper explores the effects of development projects on traditional natural resource use in three communities in Northeast Thailand, a region known as Isan. I interviewed villagers in each community and asked them to describe their environmental perceptions, management practices and livelihood strategies. Participants described several subsistence livelihoods that have traditionally been present in Isan. These include rice farming, fishing, community forestry, and wetland use. Residents from the three communities all described various cultural activities, knowledge systems, and religious ceremonies that are closely tied to their local resources. Raising silk worms, making clay pots, and performing rituals for a spirit …

Parasite Pathoecology Of Chacoan Great Houses: The Healthiest And Wormiest Ancestral Puebloans, Karl J. Reinhard
Parasite Pathoecology Of Chacoan Great Houses: The Healthiest And Wormiest Ancestral Puebloans, Karl J. Reinhard
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Two fields of paleopathological investigation originated in the Southwest. Archaeoparasitology is the study ancient parasite infection (Reinhard 1990). It includes comparisons between time periods of single societies as well as the comparison of parasitism between different, contemporaneous cultures. For example, Fry (1980) compared Fremont and Anasazi parasitism. Fry (1984) compared Archaic hunter-gatherer parasitism and Ancestral Pueblo parasitism. All of these studies fall into the definition of Archaeoparasitology. Pathoecology is the reconstruction of the relationships between behavior, environment, and disease organisms in the development of ill-health (Martinson et al. 2003; Reinhard and Buikstra 2003, Reinhard et al. 2003, Santoro et al. …

Pathoecology And The Future Of Coprolite Studies In Bioarchaeology, Karl J. Reinhard, Vaughn M. Bryant Jr.
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Human coprolites currently provide an expanding array of information about the diet, health, and ecology of prehistoric people in the Southwest, but for many years coprolites were not recognized or preserved, or they were not considered important and thus were not saved (Bryant and Dean 2006). With the expansion of archaeological field work during the last half of the twentieth century archaeologists have increasingly explored the “complete” potentials of sites, including the collection and analysis of geomorphologic, botanical, and faunal data. In some ideal habitats (e.g., very dry or frozen) this includes exploring the scientific potential of human coprolite studies. …

High-Temperature And “Exotic” Minerals From The Cioclovina Cave, Romania: A Review, Bogdan P. Onac, Herta S. Effenberger, Radu C. Breban
Studia UBB Geologia
This paper reports on the identification of four rare minerals in the phosphate deposit in Cioclovina Cave, Romania. Berlinite, AlPO4 and hydroxylellestadite, Ca5[(Si,P,S)O4]3(OH,F,Cl) are minerals that can form only at high temperatures, and would not be expected in a sedimentary environment. In this study we review the characteristics of berlinite and hydroxylellestadite from a heated sedimentary sequence in Cioclovina Cave (Romania) and refine their structure from single-crystal X-ray data. Two other minerals, churchite-(Y), YPO4⋅2H2O and foggite, CaAl(PO4)(OH)2⋅H2O are, for the first time, described from a cave environment. The minerals were documented by means of single-crystal X-ray investigations, X-ray powder diffraction, …

While Quality of Life (QOL) has long been an explicit or implicit policy goal, adequate definition and measurement have been elusive. Diverse "objective" and "subjective" indicators across a range of disciplines and scales, and recent work on subjective well-being (SWB) surveys and the psychology of happiness have spurred renewed interest. Drawing from multiple disciplines, we present an integrative definition of QOL that combines measures of human needs with subjective well-being or happiness. QOL is proposed as a multiscale, multi-dimensional concept that contains interacting objective and subjective elements. We relate QOL to the opportunities that are provided to meet human needs …

Conference papers
This paper introduces the TARCHNA approach to managing and presenting contextualised heritage content. The system uses the CIDOC CRM ontology to consolidate a virtual repository of geographically disparate heritage databases and present a holistic view of a fragmented heritage. While previous approaches to presenting heritage collections have focused on the browse and search paradigm, the TARCHNA system uses narrative concepts as a means of presenting and re-using contextualised heritage artefacts within a broader cultural setting.
