Nlp Bias And African American English, Kenya Roy, Faizan Javed Mar 2026

Nlp Bias And African American English, Kenya Roy, Faizan Javed

SMU Data Science Review

African American English (AAE), also referred to as African American Vernacular English (AAVE), is widely used on social media, but most sentiment analysis tools are trained only on Standard American English (SAE). This mismatch can cause models to misclassify dialectal expressions—especially by labeling neutral or positive AAE as negative or toxic. These errors matter, since Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems are now central to content moderation and brand monitoring. This research will evaluate the VADER, RoBERTa, GPT-OSS, and Gemma’s handling of AAE in comparison to SAE using the TwitterAAE corpus, a public dataset of tweets with estimated AAVE usage. The …

A Non-Newtonian Approach To Screw Motion And Dual Numbers, Esra Parlak, Zehra Özdemi̇r Mar 2026

A Non-Newtonian Approach To Screw Motion And Dual Numbers, Esra Parlak, Zehra Özdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we define multiplicative dual numbers, multiplicative dual vectors, scalars, and vector products associated with the multiplicative dual numbers. We give the base elements of multiplicative dual elliptic quaternions and their operational properties. We explain the rotation and translation motions in multiplicative dual elliptical quaternions. We provide the matrix representations of the screw motion using multiplicative dual elliptical quaternions. Thanks to these multiplicative dual elliptical quaternions, we explain the screw motion along with rotation and translation with theorems and proofs. We visualize this screw motion with mathematical programs by applying screw-ruled surfaces.

Numerals And Other Means Of Expressing Plurality In Language And Thought: A Developmental Perspective Across Cultures., Giovanni Giuseppe G.G. Nicosia Prof. Mar 2026

Numerals And Other Means Of Expressing Plurality In Language And Thought: A Developmental Perspective Across Cultures., Giovanni Giuseppe G.G. Nicosia Prof.

Numeracy

Several ancient languages use linguistic structures to differentiate between singular, dual, and plural forms that are used when one, two, or many objects are referenced. (Some languages go further, adding a trial form to differentiate two from three.) In many modern languages, numerals are used to convey precise number. After reviewing a range of ways languages express number (including the interesting case of Pirahã which does not express precise number), the paper concludes with a proposed developmental path for the expression of quantity in languages.

Freshwater Quality For Recreation, Heather Nix, Masha Bokar Mar 2026

Freshwater Quality For Recreation, Heather Nix, Masha Bokar

Forestry and Natural Resources

South Carolina has many water resources that provide tremendous opportunities for people to enjoy water-based recreational activities, such as swimming, boating, and fishing. Participation in these activities produces significant economic benefits and supports many jobs throughout the state. However, at times, water quality may be unsafe for immersion or skin contact due to high levels of pollutants, such as bacteria or cyanotoxins. It is important for people to be aware of potential concerns and understand methods for determining if a waterbody’s current conditions are likely to be safe for primary or secondary recreation.

Co-Electrospinning Polyacrylonitrile (Pan) / Polymer Of Intrinsic Microporosity-1 (Pim-1) For Electrochemical-Based Sensor For Pyridine Detection And Absorption, Samar A. Salim

Nanotechnology Research Centre

The electrospinning of the polymer of intrinsic microporosity-1 (PIM-1) poses challenges due to its limited solubility and tendency to form bead-like structures at high concentrations. This work details the synthesis and analysis of electrospun composite fibers made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and PIM-1 for electrochemical applications. The data analysis confirmed the successful incorporation of PIM-1 into the PAN matrix. The fiber characteristics were significantly influenced by PIM-1 loading (1–10%), resulting in fiber diameters ranging from 0.8 to 1.7 μm. A 10% concentration of PIM-1 results in the formation of macropores with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 1.7 μm. Optical analysis using …

Designing Novel Bisquinoline Antimalarials From Historical 4-Aminoquinolines To Combat Drug-Resistant Malaria, Mason J. Handford, Yuexin Li, Terry Riscoe, Xiaowei Zhang, Jane X. Kelly, Michael K. Riscoe Mar 2026

Designing Novel Bisquinoline Antimalarials From Historical 4-Aminoquinolines To Combat Drug-Resistant Malaria, Mason J. Handford, Yuexin Li, Terry Riscoe, Xiaowei Zhang, Jane X. Kelly, Michael K. Riscoe

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Plasmodium falciparum, the deadliest causative agent of malaria, continues to evade eradication efforts through widespread drug resistance. The recent development of ADC-028, a 4-aminoquinoline antimalarial with excellent activity and pharmacokinetic properties, prompted the investigation of bisquinoline analogs featuring similar structural motifs. Here, we describe a structure-activity relationship study that guided the optimization of compounds with key features, including the 4-anilinoquinoline core and diverse bridging linkers. Several analogs exhibited potent in vitro activity (IC50 < 20 nM) against both drug-sensitive and multidrug-resistant P. falciparum strains, while maintaining favorable cytotoxicity profiles. Among them, 25 demonstrated improved intrinsic metabolic stability (t1/2 = 121 min) and potent in vivo efficacy (ED50 = 0.32 mg/kg/day), achieving complete curative protection at a reduced dose compared to ADC-028. While 25 showed moderately reduced oral bioavailability (F = 43%) and a shorter half-life (T1/2 = 27.2 h) relative to ADC-028, its enhanced in vivo efficacy underscores its therapeutic potential. This work highlights a promising path forward in developing antimalarials that retain the efficacy of legacy compounds while overcoming modern resistance mechanisms.

An Odd Protocol For An Agent-Based Model Of Hepatitis C Virus Transmission In A Homogeneous Syringe-Sharing Network, Seun Ale, Que Thi Nguyet Nguyen Dr., John D. Kelleher Prof., Elizabeth Hunter Dr. Mar 2026

An Odd Protocol For An Agent-Based Model Of Hepatitis C Virus Transmission In A Homogeneous Syringe-Sharing Network, Seun Ale, Que Thi Nguyet Nguyen Dr., John D. Kelleher Prof., Elizabeth Hunter Dr.

Reports

The model described in this ODD is an agent-based model of hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission among people who inject drugs (PWID). The model assumes homogeneous mixing among syringe-sharing agents, without any form of heterogeneity in the agents interactions or syringe-sharing attitude. All syringe-sharing PWID are treated as identical in terms of their interaction frequency and syringe-sharing probability. Interactions are generated dynamically using proximity-based sampling at each timestep (one day), allowing agents to form syringe-sharing interactions based on spatial closeness. The number of daily interaction events is fixed at the population level, and each syringe-sharing agent has the same probability …

The Modern Sisyphus Blows Leaves: Attitudes And Impacts Regarding Leaf Litter Removal On A Suburban Campus, A. C. Nony, M. R. Mcclung, M. L. Reid Mar 2026

The Modern Sisyphus Blows Leaves: Attitudes And Impacts Regarding Leaf Litter Removal On A Suburban Campus, A. C. Nony, M. R. Mcclung, M. L. Reid

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Leaf litter habitat disruption in suburban spaces stems from the prevalence of “lawn culture,” that is, the accepted societal norm that land immediately surrounding humans or meant for human recreational use should be clean, tidy, controlled, and aesthetically pleasing, above other considerations. When leaf litter on residential and recreational lawns is cleared, it removes vital habitat for organisms of several taxa, especially species that rely on litter as a moisture and temperature-controlled substrate for overwintering. We administered an opinion survey to students, staff, and faculty at Hendrix College, a highly residential and suburban campus in Conway, Arkansas, to assess views …

Time-Dependent Amplification Of Growth Rates In A Plankton-Oxygen Model, Rapha Coutin Mar 2026

Time-Dependent Amplification Of Growth Rates In A Plankton-Oxygen Model, Rapha Coutin

Master's Theses

Near-bottom hypoxia occurs when dissolved oxygen levels drop to a level that is harmful to marine biology, creating biological dead zones along the ocean floor. Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in the percentage of coastal, near-bottom, hypoxic water, with the average in 2021 nearly double that of the average from 2009 to 2018 and about twenty-eight times the average from 1950 to 1980. Recent literature has linked this increase in oceanic hypoxia to the increase in upwelling-favorable winds caused by climate change. Upwelling brings low-oxygen, nutrient-rich water up to the surface, leading to plankton blooms and mass consumption …

Navigation Beyond Wayfinding: Robots Collaborating With Visually Impaired Users For Environmental Interactions, Shaojun Cai, Nuwan Janaka, Ashwin Ram, Janidu Shehan, Yingjia Wan, Kotaro Hara, David Hsu Mar 2026

Navigation Beyond Wayfinding: Robots Collaborating With Visually Impaired Users For Environmental Interactions, Shaojun Cai, Nuwan Janaka, Ashwin Ram, Janidu Shehan, Yingjia Wan, Kotaro Hara, David Hsu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Robotic guidance systems have shown promise in supporting blind and visually impaired (BVI) individuals with wayfinding and obstacle avoidance. However, most existing systems assume a clear path and do not support a critical aspect of navigation—environmental interactions that require manipulating objects to enable movement. These interactions are challenging for a human–robot pair because they demand (i) precise localization and manipulation of interaction targets (e.g., pressing elevator buttons) and (ii) dynamic coordination between the user’s and robot’s movements (e.g., pulling out a chair to sit). We present a collaborative human–robot approach that combines our robotic guide dog’s precise sensing and localization …

Molecular Lung Imaging Following Exposure To Radiation Predicts Long-Term Survival In Rats, Anne V. Clough, Kathrina Mpala, Taheri Pardis, Laura Norwood Toro, Andreas M. Beyer, Tracy Gasperetti, Ming Zhao, Sarah Kerns, Heather A. Himburg, Said H. Audi

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

Delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE), including radiation pneumonitis (lung-DEARE), develop weeks to months after radiation exposure. Pathway-targeted biomarkers that capture early oxidative stress and cell death could improve risk stratification and provide objective measures of mitigator efficacy. The objective was to test whether molecular lung imaging predicts long-term survival and mitigator response after irradiation. Rats received 13.5 Gy leg-out partial-body irradiation with a subset treated with the radiation-injury mitigator lisinopril. Rats underwent lung imaging at weeks 2 and 4 post-irradiation with 99mTc-duramycin (cell death) and 99mTc-HMPAO (oxidative stress). Plasma mitochondrial damage-associated molecular patterns (mtDAMPs) were also …

The Application, Construction, And Validation Of Hidden Markov Model Profiles For Carbonic Anhydrase Enzymes, Samuel F. Kaplan Mar 2026

The Application, Construction, And Validation Of Hidden Markov Model Profiles For Carbonic Anhydrase Enzymes, Samuel F. Kaplan

Master's Theses

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) catalyze the reversible hydration of CO2 and have evolved independently at least eight times, resulting in structurally distinct enzyme families (α, β, γ, δ, ζ, η, θ, ι). Traditional sequence alignment methods struggle to classify these convergently evolved proteins because their sequential similarity does not reliably indicate functional or evolutionary relationships. Many CA sequences in public databases are annotated generically without family assignments, and prior computational approaches have focused predominantly on the three well characterized families (α, β, γ), leaving the five recently discovered classes without robust classification tools. Family level assignment is often a prerequisite for …

All Works

Text-to-video (T2V) generation has recently emerged as a transformative technology within the field of generative AI, enabling the creation of realistic, temporally coherent videos based on natural language descriptions. This paradigm provides significant added value in many domains such as creative media, human-computer interaction, immersive learning, and simulation. Despite its growing importance, systematic discussion of T2V is still limited compared with adjacent modalities such as text-to-image and image-to-video. To alleviate the scarcity of discussions in the T2V field, this paper provides a systematic review of works published from 2024 onward, consolidating fragmented contributions across the field. We survey and categorize …

How Agile Became The Design Philosophy Of Ai Fishbowl Under Real-World Constraints, Jad Saad Mar 2026

How Agile Became The Design Philosophy Of Ai Fishbowl Under Real-World Constraints, Jad Saad

University Honors Theses

This capstone review examines the development of AI Fishbowl, a public-facing, interactive artificial intelligence system, as a case study in how Agile methods evolve from a project management tool into a design philosophy under real-world constraints. Although the project adopted an Agile workflow early on through a Kanban-style task management approach, the initial system design and architecture were still shaped by a largely plan-first mindset. This created a mismatch between flexible process and rigid design assumptions, which became increasingly apparent as the team moved from high-level architecture into implementation.

A critical turning point occurred when early architectural plans proved difficult …

N-Dqn: Neutrosophic Deep Q-Network For Uncertainty-Aware Forecasting And Decision Optimization, Rania Lutfi Feb 2026

N-Dqn: Neutrosophic Deep Q-Network For Uncertainty-Aware Forecasting And Decision Optimization, Rania Lutfi

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Uncertainty remains a critical challenge in dynamic spatiotemporal forecasting. This study proposes the Neutrosophic Deep Q-Network (N-DQN), a framework that integrates neutrosophic logic with deep reinforcement learning to enhance decision optimization under uncertainty. Features are modeled through truth, indeterminacy, and falsity membership functions, enabling robust handling of ambiguous data. The framework incorporates attention-guided preprocessing and horizon-aware optimization to adapt predictions across short- and long-term intervals. Experiments on benchmark traffic datasets (METR-LA and PEMS-BAY) demonstrate improved forecasting accuracy and reduced error rates compared with established baselines. The results highlight the scalability and resilience of N-DQN, positioning it as a promising approach …

Single-Valued, Double-Valued, Triple-Valued, Quadruple-Valued, And Quintuple-Valued Neutrosophic Graph, Takaaki Fujita, Arif Mehmood, Arkan A. Ghaib Feb 2026

Single-Valued, Double-Valued, Triple-Valued, Quadruple-Valued, And Quintuple-Valued Neutrosophic Graph, Takaaki Fujita, Arif Mehmood, Arkan A. Ghaib

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Concepts such as fuzzy sets, neutrosophic sets, rough sets, and plithogenic sets have been extensively studied as formal tools for modeling uncertainty, and they have found broad applications across many disciplines. A Double-Valued Neutrosophic Set (DVNS) extends the classical neutrosophic framework by splitting indeterminacy into two distinct components: one leaning toward truth and the other leaning toward falsity. In recent years, further refinements—namely Triple-Valued, Quadruple-Valued, and Quintuple-Valued Neutrosophic Sets—have also been introduced and investigated. These uncertainty models have naturally been lifted to graph-theoretic settings, where vertices and edges represent entities and relationships under ambiguity. Although fuzzy graphs and neutrosophic graphs …

Evaluating Domains' Trustworthiness Based On Uncertainty-Driven Methodologies In The Era Of Sixth Generation, Zekra Sakr, Mona Mohamed

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

The onset of today's innovations pledges to have a beneficial influence on contemporary civilization in an era of intelligent revolutions, setting a precedent for unrivaled efficiency, creativity, and connectedness. The integration between these technologies contributes to the mutual benefit of each one, wherein this relation is a so-called ``reciprocal partnership''. For instance, the sixth generation (6G) wireless networks permit blockchain nodes to coordinate huge volumes of transaction data in real-time. On the other hand, blockchain is considered a secure valve because spectrum sharing can be automated with blockchain and smart contracts. Accordingly, analyzing and evaluating the contribution of these technologies …

Neutrosophic Finsler–Cohomological Framework For Engineering Systems Under Uncertainty, Mona Gharib, Ghulam Muhammad, Muhammad Idrees, Zeeshan Gul Feb 2026

Neutrosophic Finsler–Cohomological Framework For Engineering Systems Under Uncertainty, Mona Gharib, Ghulam Muhammad, Muhammad Idrees, Zeeshan Gul

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

This paper introduces a novel mathematical framework that combines Neutrosophic Finsler Geometry with Neutrosophic Cohomology for evaluating the performance of Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors under uncertain and indeterminate operating conditions. Classical motor performance models typically assume precise measurements of torque, current, and efficiency; however, in real-world settings, these parameters are often affected by noise, incomplete information, and conflicting observations. By embedding motor operating states into a neutrosophic Finsler space, the proposed approach captures variations not only in magnitude but also in direction, uncertainty, and conflict of performance metrics. In addition, neutrosophic Cohomology is employed to characterize global invariants of …

Exosome Engineering For Blocking Gut Dysbiosis And Inducing Cell Death Mechanisms In Glioblastoma Multiforme, Ahalya Muraleedharan, Karthik Rangavajhula, Swapan K. Ray Feb 2026

Exosome Engineering For Blocking Gut Dysbiosis And Inducing Cell Death Mechanisms In Glioblastoma Multiforme, Ahalya Muraleedharan, Karthik Rangavajhula, Swapan K. Ray

Faculty Publications

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most lethal primary brain tumor in adults. Emerging evidence endorses that gut dysbiosis contributes to GBM progression through the gut–brain axis (GBA), promoting inflammation and therapeutic resistance via abnormal short-chain fatty acid production and cytokine dysregulation. Exosomes, naturally occurring nanovesicles (30–150 nm), offer promising therapeutic potential due to their blood–brain barrier permeability, biocompatibility, and versatile cargo capacity. This review examines exosome engineering strategies for dual targeting: inhibiting alterations in gut microbiome and inducing regulated cell death mechanisms such as apoptosis and ferroptosis in GBM. We describe exosome engineering with detailed focus on cargo loading approaches …

Investigating The Structure And Bioactivity Of Lanthanum Coordination Compounds, Shantanu Kadam, Bhushan Dhale, Bapu Yamgar, Swaminath Bhattar

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Lanthanum metal complexes were synthesized using a classical condensation method by reacting lanthanum nitrate salts with a bidentate ligand in a 1:2:1 molar ratio (M:L:L). The formation and structure of the resulting complexes were confirmed through a combination of analytical techniques, including Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, elemental microanalysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The lanthanum complexes synthesized exhibited strong in vitro antimicrobial activity. Antibacterial screening showed inhibition zones of 18–26 mm against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, surpassing those of the reference drug ciprofloxacin (16–20 mm). Antifungal studies demonstrated inhibition zones of 15–23 mm against Candida …

Monitoring Strategies In Cave Microclimate Studies, Nenad Buzjak, Dalibor Paar, Aurel Persoiu, Christos Pennos, Franci Gabrovšek, Valerija Rossi

International Journal of Speleology

Cave atmospheres are spatially confined but dynamical systems that influence subterranean ecosystems, geomorphological processes, registration and preservation of climatic signals in sedimentary archives, cultural heritage, and conservation management. Despite major advances in cave climatology, methodological approaches to microclimate monitoring remain fragmented and are in some cases still shaped by the long-standing assumption that cave air temperature simply reflects the mean annual surface temperature. This paper revisits that assumption and develops an experience- and literature-based methodological framework for cave microclimate research. Key terminology is addressed by distinguishing between cave climate, cave microclimate, and cave meteorology, and by situating microclimatic variability within …

The MERS-CoV (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus) is a zoonotic virus with a high mortality rate and a lack of antiviral drugs, underscoring the need for effective therapeutic methods. Viral entry depends on interactions between viral surface proteins and human receptors, with Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 (DPP4), a transmembrane glycoprotein, acting as the receptor for MERS-CoV. We employed Molecular Dynamics (MD) Simulations to identify critical interface residues under a high-performance computing (HPC) workflow for accelerated results. Target residue pairs were identified through analysis of salt bridge and hydrogen bond occupancy. The stability of these residues was confirmed through three independent MD Simulations …
