Climatizing National Security, Mark P. Nevitt
Climatizing National Security, Mark P. Nevitt
Faculty Articles
Is climate change a national security issue? Human security? Ecological security? This Article addresses the growing nexus between climate change and various conceptions of security with a particular emphasis on climate change's national security impacts. This Article argues that there is a growing connection between national security and climate change and a corresponding need to address the normative implications of "climatizing national security." This connection can be observed through three lenses: mitigation (reducing greenhouse gas emissions from military and national security sources); adaptation (investing in climate resilient infrastructure in an effort to prepare for climate impacts), and response (addressing climate-exacerbated …

Debris Flow And Flood Susceptibility Assessment In Phang-Nga Province, Southern Thailand, Aksara Kulsilarak
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Phang-nga, a province in Southern Thailand, is highly susceptible to geohazards such as debris flows and flooding, both of which pose significant risks to human life and property. Two major topographic factors contribute to the potential for debris flow: i) steep mountain slopes and ii) the presence of multiple mountain-front outlets. This study presents the creation of susceptibility maps for debris flow and flood hazards in Phang-nga, using the Frequency Ratio (FR) method. The analysis classified the region into five susceptibility levels: very low, low, moderate, high, and very high, based on natural break classification. For debris flow, moderate susceptibility …

Both modalities were represented by Differential Entropy (DE) features and a two-branch KAN architecture was used which composed of seven KAN variants, namely, Efficient KAN, Jacobi KAN, Hermite KAN, Fourier KAN, Chebyshev KAN, RBF KAN, and Wavelet KAN (with different wavelet types including DOG, Morlet, Mexican hat, and Meyer). The strengths of two …
Green Materials For Electromembrane Microextraction For Determination Of Norfloxacin, Thidarat Samkumpim
Green Materials For Electromembrane Microextraction For Determination Of Norfloxacin, Thidarat Samkumpim
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The gel electro membrane extraction (G-EME) has undergone many developments, including the in-gel electro membrane extraction (IG-EME) and the minimization of G-EME. First, IG-EME is a two-phase version of G-EME; its development started with suppressing the electroendoosmosis phenomenon (EEO). The EEO effect is a major problem in G-EME, which is caused by the induced water movement of the agarose membrane during the extraction. A removal acceptor phase can reduce the chance of excessive water movement. IG-EME enhances the extraction efficiency and moves the extraction to the sensing platform. In this work, IG-EME was studied with fluorescence detection for the first …

Leveraging Gpt-4 For Thai Land And Building Tax Calculation In The Bangkok Area, Sadanan Arsaibun
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This paper explores the application of large language models (LLMs), particularly GPT-4, in the context of Thai land and building tax computation. We address challenges arising from the complexity of Thai tax regulations, the scarcity of Thai-language training data, and the structured, multi-variable nature of tax computation tasks. To enhance model performance, we employ few-shot prompting, decomposition-based reasoning, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). We further introduce a JSON-style output format to support structured conversational interactions, allowing the model to identify missing user inputs and guide data collection. A secondary o3-mini pass is used as an answer verifier, helping to assess the …

Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) have led to environmental challenges, specifically waste management. Swine CAFOs generate large amounts of waste, requiring proper treatment to avoid air and water pollution. Conventional waste management technologies, such as lagoon and spray field systems, do not prevent air and water pollution impacts. Research for the past few decades led to recommendations for waste treatment technologies superior to lagoons and spray fields. Private environmental sustainability initiatives focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the food supply chain have implemented biogas digester projects for capturing methane in covered swine lagoons to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, …

Cognitive Maps are a vital tool that can be used for knowledge representation and reasoning. Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) are popular soft computing techniques used to model large and complex systems, and they can aid in explainable AI. FCMs, however, cannot model the indeterminacy that arises in a system due to various uncertainties. Neutrosophic Cognitive Maps (NCMs), upgraded FCMs that could model indeterminacy, was introduced to address this issue. NCMs are a generalization of FCMs, a field of cognitive science firmly based on neural networks. NCMs have been used to solve a wide range of problems. NCMs were introduced in …
