A Study Of The Divide-Dewey Contact Of The Boulder Batholith, Francis M. Young
A Study Of The Divide-Dewey Contact Of The Boulder Batholith, Francis M. Young
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The batholith is dated as Paleocene or early Eocene. The rocks of the batholith in this area are classified as ranging from quartz-granodiorite to granodiorite. Variation in mineral content causes a chance in color tone from light to dark gray. swarms of inclusions occur in the igneous rock near the contact.
The Rate Of Saponification Of Ethyl Esters Of Aliphatic Acids, Richard H. Sanborn
The Rate Of Saponification Of Ethyl Esters Of Aliphatic Acids, Richard H. Sanborn
Bachelors’ Theses
An ester may be defined as the reaction product of an acid and an alcohol. Eaters are formed by both mineral and organic acids. The esters of the mineral acids differ widely in their physical and chemical properties because in general there is little similarity between the mineral acids. A different situation exists with the organic acid esters. These organic acids exist in groups, called homologous series, the difference between the individual acids being only the number of carbon atoms in the acid and the configuration of the carbon chain. The properties of these acids change slowly as the series …
Soft X-Rays, William F. Roherty
Soft X-Rays, William F. Roherty
Bachelors’ Theses
Traditionally, radiation of those wavelengths produced by a potential of from 2 to 25kv. has been classified as "Grenz" or "soft" x-rays. The peculiar property of this radiation is its low penetrating power. While being transparent to more energetic radiation, animal tissue and similar materials are sufficiently opaque to Grenz rays as to be studied in detail. Since the radiation is of the continuous type, it can be made soft enough to reveal any object, providing, of course, that the tube window and object medium be not opaque. Soft x-rays are produced in exactly the same manner as others, except …
Microradiography With Biological Specimens, Arthur D. Wellman
Microradiography With Biological Specimens, Arthur D. Wellman
Bachelors’ Theses
Microradiography is a technique in which X-rays are directed through a very thin specimen onto a fine-grained photographic film and the image examined under magnification. It has been used chiefly as a supplementary tool in industrial analysis of metal structures, and even in this field has attained prominence only within the past decade. Its usefulness is limited to fine structures (except where minute flaws or impurities are to be examined in a material), and its success is limited by the degree of clarity in the radiograph to be magnified.
Solidified Alcohols, Mary Kay Enright
Solidified Alcohols, Mary Kay Enright
Bachelors’ Theses
The relatively new field of science, colloid chemistry, has risen to become an important addition to man's knowledge of the behavior of matter in the natural world and in the laboratory. Although it can no longer be viewed as a new science, it is still new enough to contain unexplored fields and to intrigue the investigator.
The study of gel formation has been received with interest by chemists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This phenomenon of sudden gel formation instead of the expected crystalline precipitate while extracting with alcohol was encountered often in experimental work.
The inquisitive mind would …

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla
Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
SUMMARY
Laboratory tests were made to determine the effectiveness of different compounds and microbial groups in increasing the stability of Peorian loess lumps against the action of falling water drops. The influence of these on percolation tests in the laboratory was also determined.
Many organic substances-dextrose, sucrose, starch, peptone, cullulose, and gum arabic-did not themselves contribute directly to soil-structure stability, though these substances do furnish energy material for soil microorganisms, which can convert them readily into either microbial tissue or decomposition products that increase soil-structure stability. Lignin, proteins, oils, fats, waxes, resin, and paraffin increased the stability of lumps of …
Public Health Reports, Clarence M. Tarzwell
Public Health Reports, Clarence M. Tarzwell
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Preliminary tests with DDT for the control of mosquitoes, forest insects, and agricultural pests demonstrated that it was toxic to a wide variety of animal life. Because there were indications that the new insecticide would be widely used, apprehension was expressed by some groups that its extensive or indiscriminate use would cause extensive harm to wildlife.
The desirability of carefully controlled use was early recognized by those in charge of extensive programs for the control of insects of public health importance. A joint statement of policy for the use of DDT issued early in 1945 (1) by the Army and …

Digestion Studies With Sheep And Wild Antelope On A Sagebrush Ration, Paul Harold Kohler
Digestion Studies With Sheep And Wild Antelope On A Sagebrush Ration, Paul Harold Kohler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Those who are responsible for the management of antelope, range livestock, and the range seek to maintain such a balance that al may thrive and reproduce. This is inevitably a difficult objective since the balance in numbers of antelope and livestock may be changed annually, but range flora changes only in long-time cycles. Therefore, the balance between the wild and domestic species and the range must be adjusted frequently by range and livestock management. The adjustment of the number of domestic animals to fit the carrying capacity of the range may be accomplished by changing management and marketing practices …
A Study Of Alcoholysis Using Methyl Esters And Tall Oil, Raymond Martin Frey
A Study Of Alcoholysis Using Methyl Esters And Tall Oil, Raymond Martin Frey
Bachelors’ Theses
One of the Easiest ways of preparing new esters is by heating an ester with another alcohol which frequently permits transfer of the acid radical from the original ester to the added alcohol, thous forming a new ester and liberating the other alcohol. Preparation of triglycerides of unsaturated fatty acids of 18 carbon atoms is hampered by the fact that prolonged heating in the usual ester formation methods causes both polymerization and condensation among acid radicals unless oxygen is carefully excluded from the reaction atmosphere. Consequently a method of acid interchange might afford the triglycerides at a faster rate and …

The Species Concept: A Semantic Review, Benjamin H. Burma
The Species Concept: A Semantic Review, Benjamin H. Burma
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
In some respects, it is extremely unfortunate that names are ever attached either to ideas or objects. The false attachment of names to ideas or objects similar but not identical with the original can work harm far exceeding the benefits conferred by having a convenient label. The name "species" has come to such a state. As we shall see, a species, be it plant or animal, is a fiction, a mental construct without objective existence. Animal, and plant, lines of descent exist in a four-dimensional continuum. To set up species in this continuous line of descent, we must chop it …
Liquid Potassium Soaps From Coconut And Corn Oils, Jack R. Kaestner
Liquid Potassium Soaps From Coconut And Corn Oils, Jack R. Kaestner
Bachelors’ Theses
My interest in liquid potassium soaps began a number of years ago. At this time I was employed at a company that manufactured various cleaning preparations, one of these being a liquid soap prepared by the interaction of potassium hydroxide and cocoanut oil. It was there that I first became acquainted with techniques and problems encountered in the soap industry.
The above mentioned notes took place during the middle of World War II, and consequently the author became familiar with some of the different fats and oils that were substituted for the then unavailable Philippine coconut oil. All of the …

Polarization And Transition In Commercial Waxes Using Dielectric Constant And Dissipation Factor Data, Lewis B. Mcclellan
Polarization And Transition In Commercial Waxes Using Dielectric Constant And Dissipation Factor Data, Lewis B. Mcclellan
Bachelors’ Theses
Many of the commercial waxes are of unknown chemical composition. Those for which the composition has been fairly well established, still contain elements of unknown character. It is the purpose or this thesis to investigate the possibility of gaining knowledge or the composition and configuration or wax molecules from a study of the dielectric constant and dissipation factor.
The first part or the thesis is devoted to the principles of dielectrics and dielectric properties. This is to acquaint the reader with the theory of dielectric phenomena. The second part deals with the experimental work and the method employed in measuring …

Management Of Native Deer In Nebraska, John H. Wampole, Edson Fichter
Management Of Native Deer In Nebraska, John H. Wampole, Edson Fichter
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications
Deer are on the increase in Nebraska. Reports of deer seen, of deer killed on highways, and of localized cases of damage to crops by deer have become increasingly frequent during the last ten years. Since Nebraska is not primarily a land of forests nor of great repute as a deer state, the presence of these mammals in more than rare occurrences arouses considerable interest-and creates new problems in wildlife management.
It is the purpose of these notes to answer some of the questions most commonly asked about deer in Nebraska, and to point out certain misunderstandings which have led …

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
PALEONTOLOGICAL and archaeological discoveries were made near Cambridge, Nebraska, by the University of Nebraska State Museum field party in the spring of 1947 (Schultz and Frankforter, 1948, pp. 279-280) . Fossils and artifacts were found in situ at the base of a fifty-foot terrace on Lime Creek (University of Nebraska State Museum Localities Ft-41 and Ft-42) and on Medicine Creek just below the mouth of Lime Creek (Ft-50). Lime Creek is located (Fig. 1) in southwestern Nebraska in the southeastern part of Frontier County. It is a tributary of Medicine Creek which in turn is a tributary to the Republican …
Studies In Quantitative Paleontology: I. Some Aspects Of The Theory And Practice Of Quantitative Invertebrate Paleontology, Benjamin H. Burma
Studies In Quantitative Paleontology: I. Some Aspects Of The Theory And Practice Of Quantitative Invertebrate Paleontology, Benjamin H. Burma
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
For some time there has been a noticeable trend toward a more strictly quantitative outlook in paleontology. In view of many special circumstances encountered in dealing with fossil material, there is a rather extended consideration here given to the theoretical background of the quantitative method as applied to fossil invertebrates. First there is a consideration of the relations between sampling theory and paleontology. This is followed by a discussion of variability in populations and the problem of inference from sample to population. A consideration is next given to the species concept and a comparison of the units which can be …

- To determine the effect of hyaluronidase on the viscosity of gelatin.
A Comparative Study Of Some Dehydrating And Infiltrating Agents, Albin A. Sheputa
A Comparative Study Of Some Dehydrating And Infiltrating Agents, Albin A. Sheputa
Bachelors’ Theses
During the past two decades methods in biological technique have been constantly improved and perfected. However, the choice of a universally satisfactory dehydrating and infiltrating agent has been much debated and various well known authorities in the field of biological technique have left this problem unsolved to the complete satisfaction of all concerned.
The Influence Of Certain Factors In Urine On The Viscosity Of Gelatin, Leonard Driss
The Influence Of Certain Factors In Urine On The Viscosity Of Gelatin, Leonard Driss
Bachelors’ Theses
After reading the Masters Thesis of Mr. Herman L. Karl, the writer became interested in this problem and then took · up the study of the proteolytic activity of normal urine. Mr. Karl worked on the urine of pregnant women. Using gelatin as a substrate, he hoped to find a difference in proteolytic activity between the urine of a woman pregnant with a male fetus and the urine of a woman pregnant with a female fetus. His results were not conclusive but suggested that the problem of proteolytic action of urine should be studied under normal conditions.

An Investigation Of Phosphate Adsorption By The Clays Montmorillonite And Kaolinite /|Cby Gordon Richard Bradford, G. R. Bradford
Theses and Dissertations
Clay minerals have widespread application in industry and play an important role in plant life (2, 17). It is the adsorptive capacity of clay which determines largely its importance to man (2). The purpose of this investigation is to interpret the mechanism of adsorption of the phosphate anion by the two clay minerals montmorillonite and kaolinite. This particular system was singled out for two reasons: 1. It has agricultural significance. 2. It is believed that if the particular phosphate adsorption mechanism is understood it will aid in an understanding of many other adsorption phenomena associated with clay.

An Isopach Map And A Discussion Of The Permian In Wyoming And Adjacent Areas, Willard Leskela
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The accelerated post-war demand for petroleum products with resultant high prices and dwindling reserves has spurred producers to an extensive search for new fields and for additional production in known fields. Exploration and discovery is dependent on the collection and correlation of vast amounts of data both in the field and that found in literature.
