Interactions Of Northern Fur Seals And Commercial Fisheries, Charles W. Fowler Jan 1982

Interactions Of Northern Fur Seals And Commercial Fisheries, Charles W. Fowler

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Under international agreement, the northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) is managed with the objective of obtaining a maximum sustainable yield. Currently the harvest is restricted to subadult males; however, between 1956 and 1968 the fur seal population of the Pribilof Islands was subjected to a harvest of females. This harvest was justified, in part, as an attempt to stimulate the production of greater quantities of harvestable animals (Chapman 1981). A reduction in the population occurred during this period as can be seen in Figure 1. As described in York and Hartley (1981), the female harvest itself provides an …

Conservation Measures In The Interim Fishery Management Plan For Atlantic Groundfish, Andrew P. Matykiewicz Jan 1982

Conservation Measures In The Interim Fishery Management Plan For Atlantic Groundfish, Andrew P. Matykiewicz

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The conservation measures used in the Interim Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic Groundfish (IFMP) were analyzed. The management techniques used include a minimum mesh size, minimum fish size and haddock spawning area closure. However the mesh regulation does not adequately address the IFMP conservation objectives. Without amendment, the IFMP cannot prevent overfishing as it is required to do by the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MFCMA). The use of a non-numeric Optimum Yield (OI) for groundfish is inappropriate without a definition of overfishing and without a contingency plan to prevent overfishing.

Sorrel, Dicamba Soil Residual Effects, Glean, Veldt Grass, Declared Weeds Blackberry, Pattersons Curse, Penny Royal, J Moore

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

CONCLUSIONS This trial has confirmed the field observation that 2,4,5-T whilst giving good initial control of Pennyroyal, fails after a number of years. Round up has a far longer term effect. This can only be attributed to a more complete initial kill as both herbicides are essentially non residual. Further work needs to be conducted on Round up in combination with soil residual chemicals or multiple applications to overcome the problem of reinfestation from seed reserves. 81A1 -01

Primary Production In Tampa Bay, Florida: A Review, J.O. R. Johansson

Reports

Primary production data for Tampa Bay is very limited. The phytoplankton component has received the greatest study effort; however, even knowledge of this group is limited and biased by the lack of area-wide and long-term studies, and the use of questionable methodologies. This review will summarize historical primary production data; discuss methodologies and their shortcomings; outline future research needs for understanding the carbon cycle of the Tampa Bay system; and discuss the carbon cycle in relation to trophic dynamics.

Effect Of Herbicides On Performance Of Aerobic Dairy Lagoons, John D. Bottom, Joseph L. Taraba

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The herbicides glyphosate, bromacil, and dalapon were assessed for their affect on the oxygen uptake of microorganisms from an aerated dairy lagoon at 20 °C. The maximum recommended addition of herbicide active ingerdient to a lagoon is: glyphosate (isopropyl amino salt)—0.42 mg/L; bromacil—3.70 mg/L; and dalapon (85.8 percent Na salt and 14.2 percent Mg salt)—1.95 mg/L. In addition, microorganism isolates from the aerobic dairy lagoon were incubated under aerobic and anerobic conditions at room temperature to assess the effects of the herbicides. Under aerobic incubation, it was found that neither herbicide type nor herbicide concentration affected isolate growth. Under anaerobic …

Management Of Roosevelt Elk Habitat And Harvest, E. E. Starkey, D. S. Decalesta, G. W. Witmer Jan 1982

Management Of Roosevelt Elk Habitat And Harvest, E. E. Starkey, D. S. Decalesta, G. W. Witmer

United States National Park Service: Publications

Historically, Roosevelt elk (Cervus elaphus roosevelti) were distributed from northern California to southern British Columbia in the coastal Pacific Northwest. During the Pleistocene, the subspecies was isolated reproductively from the Rocky Mountain elk (C. e. nelsoni) to the east by the Cascade Mountain Range and by glaciation (Guthrie 1966). Thus Roosevelt elk have adapted to relatively moist forest habitats with maritime climates, while Rocky Mountain elk evolved under the continental climate of the interior.
Unfortunately, less is known of Roosevelt elk biology than of the closely related Rocky Mountain elk east of the Cascades. This has …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Distribution and habitat selection of five adult walleyes (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum) and one adult muskellunge (Esox masquinongy), in a power plant cooling reservoir, were determined using temperature-sensitive ultrasonic transmitters, A total of 342 locations were obtained during the monitoring period (1 May-13 November 1981). Walleyes exhibited a seasonal distribution pattern; inhabiting the discharge area during the cooler months and the intake area during the warmer months, Summer-fall home ranges of three walleyes were estimated, Maximum home ranges (maximum area covered by an individual) were overlapping and similar in size, ranging from 36, 7-45, 9 ha, Estimates of utilized areas (intensively …

Aquatic Plant Communities And Invertebrates In A Prairie Pothole During Duck Brood Rearing, Jeffrey W. Mccrady Jan 1982

Aquatic Plant Communities And Invertebrates In A Prairie Pothole During Duck Brood Rearing, Jeffrey W. Mccrady

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

More than 1,100 samples of aquatic plants and associated invertebrates were collected in a prairie wetland. Sampling was done weekly throughout the duck brood rearing season. Linear regression revealed a 4 to 100 ratio of animal to plant biomass (R²=0.488). Comparatively high degrees of association were found between Ceratophyllum demersum and Gastropoda and between Lemna minor and most zooplankton groups. Significant sources of variation in invertebrate biomass were plant communities, date, plants, and community by date interaction. Depth and communities were not significant.

Significant variability was found in the biomass and densities of specific invertebrates with respect to sampling dates. Crude protein values of star duckweed-invertebrate community samples ranged from 7.6 to 18.5% and were found to correlate significantly with protein levels of the duckweed. Crude protein values for star duckweed ranged from 7.1 to …

Permeability, Underpressures, And Convection In The Oceanic Crust Near The Costa Rica Rift, Eastern Equatorial Pacific, Roger N. Anderson, Mark D. Zoback Jan 1982

Permeability, Underpressures, And Convection In The Oceanic Crust Near The Costa Rica Rift, Eastern Equatorial Pacific, Roger N. Anderson, Mark D. Zoback

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

In situ permeability and pore pressures were measured 200 m deep beneath the top of the oceanic crust at DSDP site 504B. These measurements have relevance for the transition from convective to conductive heat flow on the south flank of the Costa Rica Rift. Conventional 'slug' and constant rate injection tests were made below a hydraulic packer set at various depths in the hole. The packer was first set in a massive flow unit 37 m below the sediment-basement interface. The bulk permeability of the 172.5m of pillow basalts and basaltic flows below the packer was found to be about …
