Farm Systems and Economics research reports
In the early 1980s, the Department of Agriculture developed a mixed integer whole-farm mathematical programming model of the dryland farming system in the eastern wheatbelt of Western Australia (Morrison et al. 1986). The model named MIDAS (Model of an Integrated Dryland Agricultural System) was constructed, tested and scrutinised by a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, advisers, farm management consultants and farmers (Kingwell 1987a). The model described in some detail the biology and finances of the dryland farming system in an average season and calculated profit-maximising farm plans.
MIDAS remains an often used tool in research and extension, being applied to many …
Biological Coal Desulfurization, Ming Le
Biological Coal Desulfurization, Ming Le
Theses
Sulfur removal from coal before combustion is of considerable interest to avoid emission of oxides of sulfur(SOx). Chemical and physical methods have been developed for removing the inorganic sulfur component in coal. This component is generally associated with pyrites(FeS2). However, no commerical methods have been developed for the removal of the organic sulfur conponent. This study describes microbial methods for removing organically bound sulfur from coal. The specific goals of this study were to ascertain whether a robust biologically active population such as activated sludge biomass can remove organic sulfur from coal and to devise sulfur analytical methods …
Acid Recovery Of Cadmium And Lead From Immobilized Activated Sludge Used To Biosorb Metals, Chandrakanth Hartman
Acid Recovery Of Cadmium And Lead From Immobilized Activated Sludge Used To Biosorb Metals, Chandrakanth Hartman
Theses
A study of the adsorption and subsequent desorption of heavy metals using various concentrations of hydrochloric acids has been performed.
To accomplish this task, the following areas were investigated : immobilization of the sludge, adsorption of heavy metals, various concentrations of acid used as stripping agents, examination of the relative fractions of heavy metals obtained using various stripping agents, and the actual concentration of the acid at a particular fraction.
It was observed that water helps in extraction of cadmium to a certain extent, but lead cannot be extracted with water. Also, water mixed with dilute hydrochloric acid is more …
Liquid-Vapor Equilibria And Henry's Law Constants For Volatile Organics In Surfactants, Qianping Peng
Liquid-Vapor Equilibria And Henry's Law Constants For Volatile Organics In Surfactants, Qianping Peng
Theses
We present liquid vapor equilibria data and Henry's law constants for Methyl-ethyl Ketone, Toluene, Butyl Acetate, Acetone and i-Propanol in surfactants: Octylphenyl Decaethoxylate, Sorbitan Monooleate and Sodium Sulfonate at temperatures of 20 to 70 C.
The objective of this study is to determine the effect of applying surfactant absorption technique (neat surfactants) to volatile organic compounds (VOC's) for the removal of these species as organic vapors from air emission streams.
Liquid/vapor equilibrium data are presented as curves in several different ways:
i. Each individual VOC at four temperatures between 22 C to 70 C in the respective surfactants Octylpenyl Decaethoxylate, …

Two resolution proof strategies developed by Peterson [ Pe76j are implemented by modifying Otter, an existing automated theorem prover. The methods, Lock-T refutation and LNL-T refutation, are generalizations of unit refutation and input refutation, respectively, to non-Hom sets and represent independent, equivalent but opposite ways of searching. Thus, the two techniques can be run simultaneously, exchanging only important intermediate results known as lemmas.
The algorithms used in the implementation, which are based on a corrected version of the foundational work, are outlined in detail and justified. Next, the newly implemented strategies are tested individually and together on various non-Horn challenge …

Computer Science Technical Reports
Manufacturing industries are constantly looking for better ways to develop the software required to plan and control production processes. Experimental software is being developed using objectoriented program development techniques. There are many prototypes being used and tested at both academic and industrial institutions around the world.
The purpose of this paper is to examine a selection of these systems in order to highlight some of the main benefits which are being achieved by using object-oriented methods over the use of conventional approaches. Practical considerations are made concerning the long-term adoption of object-oriented methodologies in software development for Computer Integrated Manufacturing …

The information content of the software design product as needed by various user communities is identified. Definitions of design in classical engineering disciplines are investigated and then applied specifically to the area of software design. The Entity-Relationship model is used to describe the information content of the software design product. All the relationship types and entity types that compose the design product are described in detail. The Military Standard: Defense System Software Development, DOD-STD-2167A, is analyzed to determine how it meets the relationship type requirements.

The Ecology Of Franklin's Ground Squirrel In Indiana, Peter M. Benjamin
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A reduction in the distribution of the Franklin's ground squirrel in the eastern portion of its range has led to its classification as a threatened species in Indiana. Information is lacking on this species' habitat requirements and population characteristics in Indiana, which limits management capabilities. The purpose of this study was to identify preferred habitat and population characteristics of the Franklin's ground squirrel in Indiana. Radio telemetry was conducted from April 1987 to September 1988 at 3 sites along a railroad right-of-way (ROW} in Benton County, Indiana. Land use and habitat types were mapped; species composition, density, percent cover, percent …
Mathematical Programming Applications In Agroforestry Planning, Laurence H. Reeves
Mathematical Programming Applications In Agroforestry Planning, Laurence H. Reeves
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Agroforestry as a sustainable production system has been recognized as a land use system with the potential to slow encroachment of agriculture onto forested lands in developing countries. However, the acceptance of nontraditional agroforestry systems has been hampered in some areas due to the risk-averse nature of rural agriculturalists. By explicitly recognizing risk in agroforestry planning, a wider acceptance of agroforestry is possible. This thesis consists of a collection of three papers that explore the potential of modern stock portfolio theory to reduce financial risk in agroforestry planning.
The first paper presents a theoretical framework that incorporates modern stock portfolio …

Is Rainbow Trout Condition Influenced By Invertebrate-Drift Density?, Randall B. Filbert
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Users of the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology CTFIM) commonly assume that there is a positive linear relationship between available habitat (WUA) and stream fish biomass. However, several studies have shown a lack cf correlation between WUA and biomass. Such poor relationships may occur if other factors limit fish abundance. Food availability is a potentially important factor limiting abundance of stream fishes and can affect blomass by influencing fish condition (individual weight). I collected rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) exposed to different levels of invertebrate-drift density to determine if condition was greater where food was more abundant. I also examined …
A Comparison Of Estimation Procedures For The Beta Distribution, Huey Yan
A Comparison Of Estimation Procedures For The Beta Distribution, Huey Yan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The beta distribution may be used as a stochastic model for continuous proportions in many situations in applied statistics. This thesis was concerned with estimation of the parameters of the beta distribution in three different situations.
Three different estimation procedures-the method of moments, maximum likelihood, and a hybrid of these two methods, which we call the one-step improvement-were compared by computer simulation, for beta data and beta data contaminated by zeros and ones. We also evaluated maximum likelihood estimation in the context of censored data, and Newton's method as a numerical procedure for solving the likelihood equations …

A Whale Of A New Species, Katherine Ralls, Robert L. Brownell Jr.
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Although four new species of whale have been identified since 1937, the absence of new ones for the past 28 years might be taken to mean that they had finally all been dis- covered. Not so - a new species of beaked whale, Mesoplodonperuvianus, is described by J. C. Reyes and colleagues in the latest issue of Marine Mammal Science.

Wildlife Damage Management In The 90s—Does The Professional Fit The Profession?, Jay B. Mcaninch
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
A recurring theme at animal damage conferences has been the lack of interest in, and recognition of, animal damage management or problem wildlife manage-ment as an important topic in the wildlife profession (Timm 1982; Berryman 1983, 1989; Jones 1983; Miller 1987; San Julian 1989; Schmidt 1989a). This concern has been raised by Animal Damage Control (ADC) workers in urban, suburban, agri-cultural and forested systems and, in fact, can be heard in nearly any landscape in which wildlife are in conflict with people's use of the land. While the scope of these issues involves the largest potential constitu-ency the wildlife profession …

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Every wildlife species has positive values or benefits it provides to society. Some people enjoy hunting, while others enjoy watching and hearing wildlife; still other people derive pleasure simply knowing animals exist free from human dependency (King 1947, Ehrenfeld 1976, Steinhoff 1978). Each species also has negative values (Decker and Purdy 1988) associated with adverse impacts, such as property damage, damage to agricultural crops, predation on other valuable species, or simply being a nuisance. For any location and point in time, the net value of any wildlife resource is the sum of all its positive and negative values. The goal …

Communication is a vital part of this complex world in which we live. Even with the vast vocabulary that has evolved throughout recorded history, we still often find difficulty in expressing ourselves. As receivers of information, we struggle to grasp what the other person is trying to say. Also, when we speak to others, we struggle for the right words to use so that we can convey to that person exactly what we mean. The words we use and how we use them are very important to us as we communicate with each other. We have all experienced a time …
