Nietzsche And His Friends: Richard Wagner And Jakob Burckhardt, Meredith A. Butler
Nietzsche And His Friends: Richard Wagner And Jakob Burckhardt, Meredith A. Butler
The Courier
From November 1 to 10, 1972, Syracuse University's Bird Library was host to a unique exhibition of books, manuscript materials, photographs, and original graphics by and about Friedrich Nietzsche.
The section of the exhibition subtitled "Nietzsche and Friends" is given emphasis in this paper, which was based on materials from Syracuse University Special Collections. They detail Nietzsche's friendship with Richard Wagner and Jakob Burckhardt. As Walter Kaufmann wrote: "It was Wagner's presence that convinced Nietzsche that greatness and genuine creation were still possible, and it was Wagner who inspired him with the persistent longing first to equal and then to …

Ua35/11 Student Honors Bulletin, Vol. I, No. 1, Wku Honors Program
WKU Administration Documents
Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.

The Teacher As Liberator: An Analysis Of The Philosophy Of Education Of Friedrich Nietzsche (1973), Ann Margaret Sharp
The Teacher As Liberator: An Analysis Of The Philosophy Of Education Of Friedrich Nietzsche (1973), Ann Margaret Sharp
Collected Papers of Ann Margaret Sharp
This dissertation will be an exegesis of the educational thought of Friedrich Nietzsche with the central focus on his conception of the teacher as liberator. This will involve an analysis of his conception of freedom, an analysis which involves a grasp of his philosophy as a whole. Nietzsche never wrote a systematic educational philosophy. Yet, in a certain sense, education is his primary concern. "I teach you the overman. Man is something that shall be overcome.... The overman is the meaning of the earth." In Nietzsche's view, the conscious production of the overman, a person who is characterized by a …

Some Moral And Ethical Dilemmas Of Science In The 1970'S, Yvonne C. Condell
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Some critics of the scientific community - scientists and non-scientists - believe that scientists should become more socially responsible, that science should be tolerated only as long as its results are socially beneficial, and that science must be constitutionalized and controlled if it is not to destroy civilization.

ANTICIPATING a presidential election, with its quadrennial testing of national purpose, shortly after the appearance of this October 1972 issue of THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY, we call attention to the timeliness of articles dealing with the American dilemma in Southeast Asia, the cultural strain of an expanding technology, the brain glut of unemployed scientists as a special instance of that strain, and the evidence, slight as yet but worrisome, of a new barbarism bred by what the McLuhanites call the "cool" medium TV. This timeliness is part luck and part planning. Out of the ever increasing …
The Role Of Metaphor In Cognition:Self-Reference, Iconicity, And Simple Natures., Charles Jessup Harriman
The Role Of Metaphor In Cognition:Self-Reference, Iconicity, And Simple Natures., Charles Jessup Harriman
Philosophy ETDs
Since Aristotle's time a close connection has been recognized between metaphor and cognition. The connection can be explained if the process of understanding is metaphorical. Such an explanation involves self-reference in two ways. First, the explanation will necessarily apply to itself. Second, metaphor, because it creates significance, must include directions for its own interpretation. Self-reference has been held to result in paradox or nonsense.
Self-referential inconsistency is a problem only if meaning is determinate. Theories of determinate meaning arc based on object-reference, or propositional equivalence. Both bases are shown to be unsatisfactory, and a non-referential theory of meaning based on …

The history of Western Philosophy was precipitated by the individualization of human experiencing. The Greek classical era, which produced the West's first 'philosophers,' was the cultural progeny of the first humans in our historical record to perceive a world from the perspective of a consciousing aware of itself as a distinct entity. Prior to classical times, perception was a corporate phenomenon: in the Homeric world, the group, not the individual, was the matrix of thought and experience.

THERE ARE LUXURIES no editor can afford, like closing up shop on a balmy spring day with the rationalization that there is nothing new under the sun and of making quarterly magazines there is no end and much writing is a weariness and a vexation of the flesh. To these limited and self-serving truths we are quarterly constrained to oppose the recollection that however little our efforts accomplish we would accomplish nothing if we made no efforts. The fact that our problems are perennial does not let us off the perennial struggle to ameliorate them. …

The Relationship Of Self-Concept Changes And Performance On A Paired-Associates Learning Task To Communication Skills Training, Grace Hayden Blanchard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The study examined the relationship of Communication Skills training to attitudes toward the self and to rate of learning. Sixty fifth-grade subjects from two public school classrooms were tested twice, before and after treatment, on the Piers-Harris Children’s Self-Concept Scale and a Paired- Associates Learning task. The latter test, administered orally and individually, consisted of ten pictures of common objects. All ten pairs were shown to each subject after which only the first picture of each pair was presented and the subject was asked to recall its picture-associate. The Piers-Harris scale entitled, "The Way I Feel About Myself," a self …

A Follow-Up Study (1970-1972) Of The 1969 State Scholarship Program In The State Of Rhode Island, Fred R. Bocchio, Anthony M. Ferraro
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Introduction
The philosophy and objectives underlying the Rhode Island State Scholarship Program encompassed severa1 basic assumptions about secondary education. Some of these assumptions have changed substantially over the past fifteen years and deserve close consideration. The new emphasis toward equalizing educational opportunities had been reflected in the changing philosophy that guided the administration of student financial aid. The genesis of most aid programs could be found in a concept that fostered the belief in a system built entirely upon meritocracy. This approach provided aid to students with high achievement and measured potential, irrespective of financial need. Educators seeing the inequity …

Thinking, Freedom, And Intersubjectivity In The Philosophy Of Merleau-Ponty., Thomas W. King
Thinking, Freedom, And Intersubjectivity In The Philosophy Of Merleau-Ponty., Thomas W. King
Philosophy ETDs
Merleau-Ponty claims to have! overcome the traditional philosophical problem of the dualism of the body and the mind by describing their unity in an ambiguous "body-subject." However, it is easily demonstrated that in addition to the "body-subject11 or "pre-reflexive consciousness" Merleau-Ponty must and does allow a true and separate reflexive consciousness. It is just this reflexive consciousness, "mind," which must be reunited with the body, "body-subject," in order to overcome the dualism. Merleau-Ponty has only added a kind of subjectivity to the body, he has not united the traditional senses of "body" and "mind," both of which he must allow. …
