Dayton And The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, George Ruppell S.M. Jun 1976

Dayton And The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, George Ruppell S.M.

University of Dayton Review

Even today some people wonder why Dayton, Ohio is called the home of aviation and the mention of McCook, Wright and Patterson fields seems like another mystery. Even the news media before 1910 missed the big story. In Dayton the two sons of Bishop Milton Wright, Wilbur and Orville, bicycle builders and repairmen, thought that they could fly with an engine, and at the same time there was Samuel P. Langley, the head of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., doing the same thing. The Dayton boys corresponded with everyone they thought would have some experience with flying. Octave Chanute …

Ernst Cassirer And The Synthesis Of The Past: A Paradigm In The History Of Ideas, Mart Stewart Jul 1973

Ernst Cassirer And The Synthesis Of The Past: A Paradigm In The History Of Ideas, Mart Stewart

Dissertations and Theses

The problem of a method of historical analysis played an integral part in the scholarship of Ernst Cassirer, German philosopher and historian. An Essay on Man, the work for which he is best known in the United State, includes his most lucid discussion of the tasks and aims of the historian. The historian must reconstruct the past, infusing it with the immediacy of a living expression. "Rebirth of the past" gives man a better view of his potentialities, a freedom to see beyond the demands, characteristics, and contingencies of the moment.

This view of history and the historian's task …

Nietzsche And His Friends: Richard Wagner And Jakob Burckhardt, Meredith A. Butler

The Courier

From November 1 to 10, 1972, Syracuse University's Bird Library was host to a unique exhibition of books, manuscript materials, photographs, and original graphics by and about Friedrich Nietzsche.

The section of the exhibition subtitled "Nietzsche and Friends" is given emphasis in this paper, which was based on materials from Syracuse University Special Collections. They detail Nietzsche's friendship with Richard Wagner and Jakob Burckhardt. As Walter Kaufmann wrote: "It was Wagner's presence that convinced Nietzsche that greatness and genuine creation were still possible, and it was Wagner who inspired him with the persistent longing first to equal and then to …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

WITH this number, THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY rounds out Volume I and in effect reaches a kind of maturity. Like the April issue, this fourth number moves our horizons further out by broadening the scope of material published. Once more the editors are able to offer a fairly wide variety of intellectual fare for our discerning readers. While the April issue saw us embark for the first time on the wine-dark sea of verse, this issue carries us further with contributions from two poets who write in the modem mood. And, manuscripts already in hand indicate, …

Some Active Techniques Of Whole Functioning, William Moyer Swartley

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The following 18 best described as a comparative survey. It was written in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the American Academy of Asian Studies, a graduate school of the College of the Pacific. Since Its formation 1n 1951, the Academy has sponsored an almost unique approach to Asian Studies. The emphasis has been on what the people of the contemporary Western world have to learn from, rather than about, the cultures of the Near and Far East. Until recently, most oriental scholars have accepted a scholarly taboo against "getting too close" to …

The Development Of Character Education, Evelyn M. Shaughnessy Jun 1928

The Development Of Character Education, Evelyn M. Shaughnessy

Bachelors’ Theses

All down through the Christian years of Civilization the ultimate end of all education has been the production of men and women of character and high ideals. Then as the rush and commercialism of modern times swept upon us, this real end of education seemed to be overshadowed in the search for mere information.
