Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 6 - Assessment Of The Nutritional Variability Of Lupins As An Aquaculture Feed Ingredient, Brett Glencross, John Curnow, Wayne Hawkins Nov 2003

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 6 - Assessment Of The Nutritional Variability Of Lupins As An Aquaculture Feed Ingredient, Brett Glencross, John Curnow, Wayne Hawkins

Fisheries Research Reports

The nutritional value of the kernel meals of three species of lupin (Lupinus albus, L. angustifolius and L. luteus) was compared against each other and a reference ingredient of solvent extracted soybean meal, when fed to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Each lupin kernel meal was included in test diets at 300 g/kg and also at a greater level, representing 50% of the total protein content in the diet. The digestibility of protein of all lupin kernel meals was better than for the soybean meal. The highest protein digestibility was that from L. luteus kernel meal at 30% inclusion (100%), which …

Effects Of Salts On Crystallization Kinetics And Rheological Behavior Of Concentrated , -Trehalose Solutions, Marina Cerdeira, M. C. Puppo, Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera Nov 2003

Effects Of Salts On Crystallization Kinetics And Rheological Behavior Of Concentrated , -Trehalose Solutions, Marina Cerdeira, M. C. Puppo, Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The effect of addition of CaCl2 2H2O and MgCl2 6H2O on crystallization kinetics and the rheological behavior of a 70% trehalose solution was studied by polarized light microscopy and dynamic oscillatory rheometry. Salts caused a delay on nucleation with induction times for crystallization longer for Mg2+ than for Ca2+. Divalent cations were incorporated into crystals, changing the growth of certain faces preferentially, which resulted in changes in morphology. Addition of CaCl2 2H2O in a high salt/trehalose molar ratio dramatically increased complex modulus (G*), indicating a stronger viscoelastic behavior. A gel-like structure was formed when Ca2+ was added to trehalose solution. …

Reviews Of Fatal Harvest: The Tragedy Of Industrial Agriculture And The Fatal Harvest Reader: The Tragedy Of Industrial Agriculture, Edited By Andrew Kimbrell, Charles A. Francis

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Fatal Harvest introduces and dispels key myths about industrial agriculture: greater efficiency; safe and nutritious food that is cheap to consumers; benefits to wildlife and environment; how biotechnology will save the world. In essays by leading proponents of a more equitable and sustainable food system, the book presents compelling evidence that alternative systems guided by an agrarian ethic will better address our food needs while protecting our natural environment and soil resources.

Wendell Berry cites the separation of people from their food supply and natural environment as a causal factor in our ready acceptance of today's industrial agriculture. When we …

Effect Of Sucrose Ester Addition On Nucleation And Growth Behavior Of Milk Fat-Sunflower Oil Blends, Marina Cerdeira, Silvana Martini, Richard W. Hartel, Maria Lidia Herrera Sep 2003

Effect Of Sucrose Ester Addition On Nucleation And Growth Behavior Of Milk Fat-Sunflower Oil Blends, Marina Cerdeira, Silvana Martini, Richard W. Hartel, Maria Lidia Herrera

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The effects of addition of the sucrose esters (SE) P-1670, P-170, and S-170 to a high-melting fraction of milk fat (HMF) and its blends with sunflower oil (SFO) on nucleation and growth were studied by laser polarized light turbidimetry and polarized light microscopy (PLM). The three SE delayed nucleation of HMF at the temperatures selected. P-1670 did not modify average crystal size after 3 h at crystallization temperature (Tc) or crystal size distribution and modified crystallization kinetics only slightly. P-170 and S-170, however, markedly diminished crystal size and narrowed crystal size distribution. Activation free energies of nucleation at equivalent supercooling, …

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 4 - Determining Waste Excretion Parameters From Barramundi Aquaculture: Final Report For Aquaculture Development Fund Of Wa, Brett Glencross, Neil Rutherford, Wayne Hawkins Sep 2003

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 4 - Determining Waste Excretion Parameters From Barramundi Aquaculture: Final Report For Aquaculture Development Fund Of Wa, Brett Glencross, Neil Rutherford, Wayne Hawkins

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

This study was undertaken to evaluate the nutrient excretion budgets for each of three key commercial diets when fed to barramundi (Lates calcarifer). The diets differed primarily in their energy density ranging from 21.3 MJ/kg DM to 23.0 MJ/kg DM, with the protein content of each diet being relatively constant at around 550 g/kg DM. The determination of the nutrient excretion budgets required the assessment of the digestibilities of key nutrients from each of the diets and also the specific retention of nutrients over a prolonged period. This necessitated two digestibility trials and a growth trial.

An examination was also …

The Psychological Characteristics Of Obese Children, Thomas Taylor Mitchell Sep 2003

The Psychological Characteristics Of Obese Children, Thomas Taylor Mitchell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Several studies along with the surgeon general of the United States have identified obesity as a national health issue. Research indicates that adult obesity treatment has relatively poor long-term effects. Consequently increased attention has been given to addressing obesity in children. This focus is particularly vital due to the fact that children are one of the populations showing the most rapid increase in overweight and obesity. The purpose of this study was to identify the some of the unique psychological characteristics of obese children by analyzing the intake data of children and adolescents attending the Loma Linda University Growing Fit …

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 3 - Early Life History Of Abalone (Haliotis Rubra, H. Laevigata): Settlement, Survival And Early Growth. Final Report For Frdc Project 1998/306, Dr Sabine Daume Sep 2003

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 3 - Early Life History Of Abalone (Haliotis Rubra, H. Laevigata): Settlement, Survival And Early Growth. Final Report For Frdc Project 1998/306, Dr Sabine Daume

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

Australian abalone fisheries produce a high value, export-orientated products that provided 60% of the world supply in 1994 (Fleming, 2000). With wild abalone fisheries declining in countries worldwide, the interest in aquaculture products has increased substantially. The world production of abalone from aquaculture in 1999 was approximately 7,775 tonnes with only 89 tonnes (ca. 1%) being produced in Australia (Fleming, 2000). Abalone farming is expected to develop into a major industry and is a significant investment opportunity (McNamara, Victorian Aquaculture Strategy, May 1997). Future production from the numerous farms and sites either established, under construction or approved in Australia, could …

Quality Of White Rice Retail Packaged In No. 10 Cans For Long-Term Storage, M. B. Halling, N. D. Van Noy, Lynn V. Ogden, Oscar A. Pike

Faculty Publications

Dry foods, such as white rice, are available for retail sale packaged in No. 10 cans for long-term storage in case of natural disasters or other emergencies. Little information is available regarding the quality of such products that are packaged for prolonged storage using hermetically sealed containers and oxygen absorbers. The objective of this research was to evaluate and compare the quality of several different brands of white rice products packaged for long-term storage, available at the retail level. Ten brands of rice products (7 long-grain white rice, 2 parboiled white rice, 1 instant white rice) packaged in No. 10 …

Quality Of Dehydrated Whole Egg Packaged In No. 10 Cans, T.A. Gnadt, Lynn V. Ogden, Oscar A. Pike

Faculty Publications

Dehydration reduces egg mass and increases shelf-life without significantly affecting most functional properties. This has created a demand for dehydrated whole egg in military rations, emergency relief programs and personal storage. However, because such products are usually stored before use, the buyer may be unaware of product quality until long after purchase. The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality of several brands of dehydrated whole egg commercially packaged in No. 10 cans. Eight brands of dehydrated whole egg were obtained from food retailers. All but 1 brand were labeled as having a low oxygen environment. A 50 …

Quality And Adequacy For Long-Term Storage Of Dehydrated Apple Slices Packaged In No. 10 Cans, T. S. Oesterle, Lynn V. Ogden, Oscar A. Pike

Faculty Publications

Dehydrated food commodities can be packaged in restaurant-size No.10 cans intended for long-term storage for such uses as personal storage, emergency relief efforts and military rations. Because foods packaged for long-term storage are seldom opened soon after purchase, the quality of the product or the adequacy of the packaging could be unknown to the buyer for months or even years. The objective of this research was to compare the quality of various brands of dehydrated apple slices sold at the retail level in No.10 cans and to evaluate the adequacy of the packaging for long-term food storage. Nine brands of …

Quality Of Hermetically Packaged Nonfat Dry Milk In Long-Term Storage, Michelle A. Lloyd, Lynn V. Ogden, Oscar A. Pike

Faculty Publications

Over the past few decades, nonfat dry milk (NFDM) has been retail-packaged for long-term storage in No. 10 cans under reduced oxygen concentrations for use in emergency situations. Little information is available concerning the quality of NFDM held in such conditions for prolonged storage periods. The objective of this research was to evaluate the quality attributes of NFDM in hermetically sealed cans with reduced oxygen levels held in long-term storage. Twenty samples of regular and instant NFDM (representing 9 brands) stored up to 29 years at ambient conditions were obtained from 14 sources. Samples were evaluated for headspace oxygen, can …

Quality Of Dehydrated Mashed Potatoes Retail Packaged In No. 10 Cans, H. Farnsworth, Lynn V. Ogden, Oscar A. Pike

Faculty Publications

Manufacturers of further processed potato products recognize consumer demand for convenience and the economy of transporting dehydrated commodities. Because of their bulkiness, dehydrated potato products are often sold in large containers, including No. 10 cans. The quality of such products available at the retail level has not been reported. The objective of this research was to compare the quality of several brands of dehydrated instant mashed potatoes packaged in No. 10 cans for retail sale. Eight brands of instant mashed potatoes, including two types (4 granules, 4 flakes) packaged in No. 10 cans were obtained from retail outlets representing at …

Effects Of Long-Term Storage On Quality Of Regular And Quick Rolled Oats, M. B. Mcewan, Lynn V. Ogden, Oscar A. Pike

Faculty Publications

Traditionally, shelf life studies of cereal staples have investigated quality after storage for a maximum of several (~18) months. However, there is a market for product that will store for much longer periods of time, intended for such uses as personal storage, emergency relief efforts and military rations. Rolled oats in hermetically sealed cans and treated to remove oxygen are available at the retail level, yet little work has investigated the effects of long-term storage on quality. The objective of this research was to investigate the quality of regular and quick rolled oats packaged in cans for long-term storage. Twenty …

Pre-Exercise Fueling And Endurance: Effect Of A Pre-Exercise Almond-Raisin Beverage Versus A Commercial Sports Beverage On Performance In Trained Male Runners, Wendy N. Bazilian

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Aside from genetics and training, no factor plays as important a role in exercise performance as nutrition. What athletes consume before exercise longer than 60 min influences fuel use, perceived exertion (RPE), heart rate (HR) and time-to-exhaustion (TE). Ingesting carbohydrates (CHO) before exercise can delay exhaustion over placebo, but less is known about combinations of CHO and fat on fuel use and endurance. To date, there are few studies that systematically explore nutritious, whole food products like nuts and dried fruits as pre-exercise fuel sources for endurance exercise.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of 2 …

Crystallization Of Sunflower Oil Waxes, Silvana Martini, M. C. Anon

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Activation free energies of nucleation (ΔG c ) were calculated using induction times of crystallization measurements. Results showed that ΔG c decreased exponentially as wax concentration increased at a constant crystallization temperature (T c ). In contrast, for a constant supersaturation, ΔG c increased from 12 to 22°C but decreased between 22 and 35°C. Melting behavior of purified waxes and solutions of purified waxes in sunflower oil were studied by DSC after crystallization at fast and slow cooling rates (20 and 1°C/min, respectively). Low supercooling temperatures (T c >65°C) showed an increase in the onset temperature (T 0 ) as …
