Increasing Patient Feedback Survey Completions Through Patient-Centered Nursing Communication: A Quality Improvement Project, Lindsey E. Pawlowski
Increasing Patient Feedback Survey Completions Through Patient-Centered Nursing Communication: A Quality Improvement Project, Lindsey E. Pawlowski
Master's Theses and Capstones
Background: Patient feedback is essential to providing the best possible nursing care. Positive patient experiences can impact overall patient satisfaction, loyalty, and trust.
Local Problem: On a pediatric unit at a New England hospital, an assessment of the microsystem revealed that there was a low number of monthly patient feedback survey completions, which limited insight into patient experiences.
Aim Statement: The primary aim of this project was to increase the number of monthly National Research Corporation (NRC) surveys to ten by June 30, 2026.
Methods: This quality improvement project was guided by the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model. The first stage of …
Improving Telemetry Alarm Fatigue By Reducing Perception Of Noise Through Education: A Quality Improvement Project, Emma Bergeron
Improving Telemetry Alarm Fatigue By Reducing Perception Of Noise Through Education: A Quality Improvement Project, Emma Bergeron
Master's Theses and Capstones
Background: The perception of excess telemetry noise has a negative impact on nursing staff workflow, emotional stress, physical stress, and alarm fatigue. This can create a distressing workplace, interrupt the ability to answer telemetry alarms in an appropriate amount of time, and further worsen alarm fatigue in nursing staff.
Local Problem: The local problem identified was the perception of telemetry noise and alarm fatigue. The purpose of this study was to assess the extent of alarm fatigue and perception of telemetry noise on the unit.
Methods: The study consisted of an assessment of the microsystem itself and the observed impact …
Promoting Safe And Effective Ciwa-Ar Protocol Adherence On An Inpatient Psychiatric Unit Through An Educational Reference Poster: A Quality Improvement Project, Kenan J. Gray
Master's Theses and Capstones
Abstract
Background: Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) can progress to seizures, delirium tremens, and autonomic instability. The Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol–Revised (CIWA-Ar) supports symptom-triggered AWS management, but safe use depends on timely nursing assessment, reassessment, and documentation.
Local Problem: On an adult inpatient psychiatric unit, chart audits identified CIWA-Ar protocol adherence gaps, including missed four-hour assessments and one-hour reassessments after lorazepam.
Methods: This quality improvement project used the Plan-Do-Study-Act model. Three educational reference posters were placed in high-visibility staff areas with QR-linked access to the facility’s AWS protocol and CIWA-Ar scoring guidelines. Outcomes were evaluated using pre- and post-intervention …
Improving Nurse Well-Being And Patient Safety Through A Structured Break Buddy System: A Quality Improvement Project, Elizabeth Harrington
Improving Nurse Well-Being And Patient Safety Through A Structured Break Buddy System: A Quality Improvement Project, Elizabeth Harrington
Master's Theses and Capstones
Abstract
Background: Nursing burnout has become an increasing concern due to heavy workloads, staffing shortages, and the inability of nurses to consistently take uninterrupted rest breaks during their shifts. Missed breaks contribute to fatigue, emotional exhaustion, decreased job satisfaction, and an increased risk of patient safety events. Evidence suggests that structured break interventions may improve opportunities for recovery during the workday.
Methods: A quality improvement (QI) project was conducted on a respiratory care unit at a midsized hospital in central New Hampshire using the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) framework. A microsystem assessment identified inconsistent break-taking as a significant gap. A five-question anonymous …
Implementing A Standardized Patient Report Sheet To Improve Timeliness And Efficiency Of Patient Handoff Reports: A Quality Improvement Project, Brian F. Mclaughlin
Implementing A Standardized Patient Report Sheet To Improve Timeliness And Efficiency Of Patient Handoff Reports: A Quality Improvement Project, Brian F. Mclaughlin
Master's Theses and Capstones
Abstract
Background: A successful patient handoff report is a foundational element of nursing care, it encompasses the patient's medical history, current treatment plan, patient-centered goals, and notes of consideration. Blazin et. al. (2020) identified unsuccessful patient handoff reports as the root cause of many medical errors. Improving the patient handoff report process provides opportunities for increased registered nurse job satisfaction, reduced medical errors, and increased time efficiency.
Local Problem: Anecdotal discussions with nursing staff on an adult medical-surgical unit revealed frustration with the patient handoff reporting process. Nursing staff cited interruptions, lengthy patient handoff report times, and the need to …

Riddle Me Resilient: Investigating The Impact Of Riddle Based Class Openings On Student Resilience And Well-Being, Carolyn T. Brown
DNP Projects
Abstract
Background: Burnout among nurses and nursing students is a widespread and well‑documented problem that adversely affects professional performance and psychological well‑being. Resilience serves as a key protective factor, helping buffer the effects of academic stress and reducing burnout over time. Incorporating brief, low‑stakes cognitive challenges—such as a riddle—can help foster resilience.
Purpose: This project evaluated the impact of incorporating riddles into a wellness-focused course, Introduction to Mindfulness and Wellness, on resilience and well-being among undergraduate nursing students.
Methods: This project employed an Institutional Review Board approved pre-post survey design to measure the effect of an intervention focused on …
Evaluating The Implementation And Use Of A Standardized Screening Process To Increase Flu Vaccine Uptake In A Rural Health Primary Care Clinic, Mackenzie L. Pierce
Evaluating The Implementation And Use Of A Standardized Screening Process To Increase Flu Vaccine Uptake In A Rural Health Primary Care Clinic, Mackenzie L. Pierce
DNP Projects
Background: Research has shown that an annual influenza vaccine is the most effective way to both prevent and reduce the risk of hospitalization and severe health complications of the flu. A yearly influenza vaccination is recommended for everyone age 6 moths and older.
Local Problem: Rural communities have lower rates of influenza vaccination which can be due in part to a lack of screening and education on vaccines and their importance. No process for influenza vaccine status screening existed at the project site prior to this project.
Methods: A quality-improvement project was conducted to evaluate the implementation of a standardized …

Advancing Rural Health Equity Through Systematic Sdoh Screening- A Quality Improvement Initiative, Laura C. Combs
DNP Projects
Background: Social determinants of health (SDoH) significantly affect health outcomes and healthcare utilization, particularly in rural communities. In 2024, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services mandated SDoH screenings in the inpatient setting, with recommendation to implement in rural clinics without specifying a standardized tool, resulting in inconsistent identification of needs, e.g., food insecurity, housing instability, mental health concerns, financial strain, and transportation barriers.
Purpose: This quality improvement initiative implemented a standardized SDoH screening tool in a rural outpatient clinic to evaluate changes in referral rates to community-based resources pre- and post-implementation and to improve patient reporting of social needs. …
Implementation Of A Cardiomems Screening Tool To Increase Provider Awareness And Referrals In Eligible Patients, Monica Rios
Implementation Of A Cardiomems Screening Tool To Increase Provider Awareness And Referrals In Eligible Patients, Monica Rios
DNP Projects
Background: Heart failure affects over 6 million Americans and causes more than one million hospitalizations annually. CardioMEMS, a remote pulmonary artery pressure monitoring device, effectively reduces hospitalizations, yet its use remains limited due to provider and system barriers. The purpose was to increase CardioMEMS referrals for eligible heart failure patients through targeted provider education and a standardized screening tool.
Local Problem: Kentucky experiences higher heart failure hospitalization rates than the national average, contributing to prolonged hospital stays and rising healthcare costs.
Methods: A pre—post quasi-experimental study was conducted at an academic medical center. Baseline chart review of 47 patients evaluated …
Improving Compliance With Preoperative Antibiotic Protocols For Cardiac Implanted Electronic Devices: A Quality Improvement Project, James Kaup
DNP Projects
Abstract
Background
Cardiac implantable electronic device infections remain a serious complication of permanent pacemaker implantation despite evidence-based infection prevention guidelines.
Local Problem
An academic electrophysiology laboratory identified inconsistent guideline-concordant antibiotic selection despite consistently high compliance with recommended antibiotic timing.
Methods
A nurse-led, quasi-experimental pre-post quality improvement project evaluated implementation of a standardized preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis protocol. Data from 36 permanent pacemaker implantations (16 pre-intervention, 20 postintervention) were analyzed.
Interventions
The intervention included a standardized antibiotic protocol, multidisciplinary staff education, and performance feedback.
Results
Guideline-concordant antibiotic selection improved from 37.5% to 95.0% (χ² = 11.27, P = .001). Antibiotic timing remained …

Background:
This study investigated the influence of belongingness, self-efficacy, and clinical learning support on readiness for nursing practice and explored the role of demographic factors and nursing program differences.Method:
A quantitative, descriptive approach was used to explore undergraduate prelicensure senior nursing students' perceptions across the United States. Results:
Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression demonstrated students in traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs reported significantly higher scores across all domains compared with those in associate degree programs (p < .01). Similarly, students in programs with ≤400 clinical hours and those assigned only one preceptor scored significantly higher on all measures (p < .01 and p < .05, respectively). Regression analysis indicated self-efficacy and learning support explained 47.9% of the variance in practice readiness (p < .05).Conclusion:
These findings share how clinical experiences shape students' readiness for nursing practice. Recommendations …Investigating The Role Of Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine For Cancer Symptom Management In Older Adults: A Rapid Review, Isabelle C. Karshner

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a significant public health concern in the United States, with increasing rates reported in many states, including North Carolina. Limited sexual health education, stigma surrounding sexual health discussions, and lack of awareness regarding prevention and screening contribute to ongoing transmission, delayed diagnosis, and potential long-term complications associated with untreated STIs. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to implement a sexual health education program aimed at increasing knowledge of STI transmission, prevention strategies, and the importance of screening among adults aged 18 years and older. Two educational sessions were completed within …

Predicting the likelihood parents will become physically abusive towards their children remains a high priority. Early parenting stress may increase the extent to which parents negatively appraise their children's behaviours, which in turn may influence their abuse risk. This study explored whether parental negative attributions mediated the association between early parenting stress and later abuse risk. A sample of 186 first-time mothers and 146 of their male partners reported on their parenting stress when infants were 6 months old and their negative attributions regarding child behaviours at 18 months. Parents' child abuse risk was assessed at age four using two …

Background
Internationally educated nurses play a vital role in addressing global nursing workforce shortages and supporting healthcare systems across many high-income countries. As international nurse migration continues to increase worldwide, effective transition, onboarding, and acculturation practices have become important determinants of workforce integration and retention. In the United States, internationally educated nurses comprise a growing segment of the nursing workforce; however, variability in onboarding practices may affect successful integration and retention.
Aim
To examine recruitment agency–mediated onboarding and acculturation practices and their association with contract completion among internationally educated nurses in the United States.
Design
Cross-sectional descriptive correlational study.

A Multidisciplinary Transitional Care Bundle To Reduce Hospital Readmission In Patients With Heart Failure: A Quality Improvement Project, Pearl Zehua Stahler
A Multidisciplinary Transitional Care Bundle To Reduce Hospital Readmission In Patients With Heart Failure: A Quality Improvement Project, Pearl Zehua Stahler
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
Background: Heart failure (HF) is associated with substantial morbidity, mortality, healthcare utilization, and risk of unplanned hospital readmission. Gaps in structured discharge planning and post-discharge follow-up may contribute to preventable readmissions. Purpose: This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to implement a multidisciplinary transitional care bundle to strengthen care coordination, improve the post-discharge pathway, and reduce unplanned heart failure hospital readmissions (UHFHR). Methods: The project included 20 adults hospitalized with HF in a 56-bed telemetry unit in a South Texas acute care hospital. The eight-week intervention included social determinants of health (SDoH) assessment, nursing-led discharge education, HF clinic follow-up within 14 …
Clinical Challenges Associated With Enhancing Hypertension Among The Underserved African American Population, Ashley Richardson
Clinical Challenges Associated With Enhancing Hypertension Among The Underserved African American Population, Ashley Richardson
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
Background
African Americans face a significantly higher prevalence of hypertension, tend to develop complications at younger ages, and have disproportionately higher mortality rates. Key social determinants of health (SDoH)—including food deserts, unequal access to healthcare, and geographic disparities in healthcare resources—contribute to these ongoing inequities. Addressing both systemic and individual barriers is crucial for effective hypertension management.
Objective
This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a culturally relevant, community-based intervention designed to reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure among Black adults with uncontrolled hypertension.
Methods
Quality improvement (QI) initiatives typically employ multicomponent, equity-focused models. The primary components of …

Background: Recovery capital encompasses internal and external factors that support recovery from substance use disorder, such as employment, social support, and physical and mental health. There is a need for more research on recovery capital among women who are incarcerated, who often face complex barriers to recovery, such as poverty, unemployment, and histories of trauma.
Methods: Women (N ¼ 900) were recruited from Kentucky jails as part of the broader NIDA-funded Kentucky Justice Community Opioid Innovation Network (JCOIN) cooperative project. Measures from baseline interviews (during incarceration) were selected in alignment with the Substance Abuse Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA)’s four …

Introduction: Researchers have traditionally engaged Community Advisory Boards (CABs) to meaningfully involve community members in the research process. However, CABs are often formed only after a grant is funded, leading to criticisms of functioning merely as “ethical approvers.” For substance use researchers, the inclusion of people with living experience (PWLE; current experience with drug use) across all stages of research is especially important as they have historically been the experts in the needs of their community. Methods: In response to this need for community engagement in research, the University of Kentucky, in partnership with a local recovery community center (RCC; …

We evaluated the implementation of local coalitions led in partnership with citizen scientists, community-based organizations, and public libraries in four rural communities to lower exposure to radon in the home. The objectives were to (1) describe the Reach-Effectiveness-Adoption-Implementation-Maintenance (RE-AIM) of four radon coalitions, and (2) compare RE-AIM factors among citizen scientists who participated in the coalitions and those who did not. A larger community-engaged research project embedded coalition building using a citizen science approach. Three of the four coalitions focused on health and wellness more broadly (18–34 members); one focused solely on radon (10 members). Coalition membership and activities varied …

Tobacco use remains disproportionately high among adults living with mental illnesses (MIs), contributing to excess morbidity and mortality, particularly in high-burden states such as Kentucky. Behavioral healthcare providers are well-positioned to address this disparity but often lack formal training in evidence-based tobacco treatment. Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) training provides healthcare providers with skills to deliver evidence-based tobacco treatment; however, traditional TTS training models often rely on synchronous, in-person or live virtual formats, which may limit accessibility for some healthcare workforces. Asynchronous, web-based delivery models may reduce these barriers. This study evaluates a targeted, asynchronous TTS training program designed for providers …

Globally, skin injury related to diaper dermatitis remains a pervasive yet preventable threat to neonatal patients (Jaieyoba and Visscher, 2025). In fact, the Jani et.al. 2022 study found that diaper dermatitis is the most frequently reported skin injury in premature infant patients across NICU units globally at 39%, with NICU patients in North America having a significantly higher rate of diaper dermatitis of 62%, juxtaposed to European NICU patients at 31% (Jani et.al., 2022). However, numerous studies found that implementation of a standardized skin assessment tool was a key factor in reducing rates and/or severity of perineal skin injury (Ahmadizadeh …
