Interpersonal Violence And Contraceptive Method Use By Women Sex Workers, Jessica L. Zemlak, Rebecca Hamilton White, Danielle Friedman Nestadt, Kamila A. Alexander, Ju Nyeong Park, Susan G. Sherman

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Objective

More than one-half of women sex workers (sex workers) in the United States experience interpersonal violence, defined as physical or sexual violence, by sexual partners, including clients or intimate partners. Women experiencing interpersonal violence by intimate partners often choose hidden, woman-controlled contraception (e.g., intrauterine devices, pills, or sterilization) because fear of violence can impede condom negotiation. Yet, little is known about how interpersonal violence relates to contraception among sex workers who may have different sexual partner perpetrators (clients and intimate partners). The purpose of this study was to examine associations between interpersonal violence perpetrated by clients or intimate partners …

Utilization Of Telephone Outreach And Telemedicine To Improve Diabetic Outcomes, Nicolas Yemm Oct 2021

Utilization Of Telephone Outreach And Telemedicine To Improve Diabetic Outcomes, Nicolas Yemm

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Diabetic adherence is paramount to achieving adequate glycemic control. Telephone outreach and utilization of telemedicine can improve diabetic adherence through closer monitoring and removing barriers to access for care. The goal of the project was to improve the dashboard HbA1c quality metric within the IM office. The office dashboard HbA1c metric initially was in the “red threshold”, which means <70% of patients aged 18-75 years old with diabetes had a HbA1c <8%. This project involved performing telephone outreach to contact diabetic patients who were due for office follow-up to offer telemedicine as a convenient option for patient evaluation. In addition, the secondary goals of the project included identifying social determinants presenting barriers to diabetic care plan adherence. The results indicated telephone outreach and telemedicine use may help achieve better glycemic control in diabetic patients. This project demonstrated improvement in HbA1c dashboard metrics to the “yellow threshold”, indicating 71% of patients (18-75 years old) in the office with diabetes had a HbA1c <8%. Several limitations were identified, including a short implementation window (6 weeks), lack of ability to assess whether providers were instituting project recommendations, staff engagement, and internet bandwidth/technology literacy issues when using telemedicine. From a long-term implementation perspective, the project showed telephone outreach and telemedicine are useful tools that can positively impact poorly controlled diabetic patients to improve glycemic control. However, the limitations of the project will likely need to be addressed to achieve long-term implementation of the project methods.

Detection Of Breast Cancer In African American Women Using Walk-In Mammography, Munachi Nwosu

Dissertations

Abstract

Problem: Breast cancer is a life-threatening condition, in which the prognosis could potentially worsen with a delay in the detection and commencement of treatment. Scheduling patients for mammograms continues to allow for long wait times that exist in screening mammography. Lower rates of participation in scheduled screening mammograms contributes to the increased rate of advanced breast cancer diagnosis that exit in African American women and threatens their health outcomes. The purpose of this project was to implement walk-in mammography to increase participation for early breast cancer detection.

Methods: An observational descriptive design with a retrospective chart review. A PDSA …

A Safety Net: Early Assessment Of Multiple Social Determinants Of Health Risk Factors In The Pediatric Inpatient Population, Emily Caroline Brister

Doctoral Projects

A lack of protocol for screening of social determinants of health (SDH), specifically for pediatric patients, despite national endorsement, is setting a basis for increased rates of negative health outcomes that can follow individuals into adulthood. The PRAPARE tool, or the Protocol for Responding to and Assessing Patients’ Assets, Risks, and Experiences, is a guided national effort to assist healthcare centers in the collection of the necessary social data required to care for patients and act upon their social determinants of health (The National Association of Community Health Centers [NACHC], 2019). This project acted to identify if the early assessment …

The Effects Of Debriefing On Nurse Distress After Perinatal Loss, Russin Marie Kelly Oct 2021

The Effects Of Debriefing On Nurse Distress After Perinatal Loss, Russin Marie Kelly

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Labor and delivery nurses are the first-line caregivers for women suffering a perinatal loss which involves miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant death. This loss of life can cause nurses’ distress. This project proposes using the PEARLS healthcare debriefing tool as an intervention to decrease distress and improve nurse satisfaction. Before and after the debriefing intervention, a survey allowed the nurse to rate their distress from zero to ten using the distress thermometer and answer questions about job satisfaction. The data analyzed shows that the debriefing intervention decreased nurse distress after perinatal loss compared to the prior practice of no debriefing after …

An Integrative Literature Review And Critical Reflection Of Intersectionality Theory, Ashley Ruiz, Jeneile Luebke, Katie Klein, Kaylen M. Moore, Michael Gonzalez, Anne Dressel, Lucy Mkandawire-Valhmu Oct 2021

An Integrative Literature Review And Critical Reflection Of Intersectionality Theory, Ashley Ruiz, Jeneile Luebke, Katie Klein, Kaylen M. Moore, Michael Gonzalez, Anne Dressel, Lucy Mkandawire-Valhmu

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Intersectionality theory has been used by nursing scholars to offer insight into how multiple systems of oppression mutually interact to impact health and to examine how multiple social modes of existence shape individual and group experiences of health inequality. The application of intersectionality theory, however, requires a reflexive critical lens to more effectively inform nursing science and practice. We draw on a comprehensive integrative literature review to offer a critical reflection by considering the semantic and structural consistency, generalizability, simplicity and complexity, and the utility and value of intersectionality theory to nursing science and practice. If nurses are to effectively …

Challenges In Conducting Online Videoconferencing Qualitative Interviews With Adolescents On Sensitive Topics, Salima Moez Meherali, Samantha Louie-Poon

The Qualitative Report

In the wake of COVID-19, researchers are seeking innovative data-collection methods. Computer-mediated communication platforms have played a pivotal role among these pursuits. However, conducting online interviews present challenges to both researchers and participants. Online data-collection forces researchers to give up control over the study environment due to the varying location participants partake in interviews. Consequently, researchers can no longer fully guarantee the confidentiality and privacy of the researcher-participant conversations. Participants may face difficulties if being asked to disclose private information in the presence of family members. These challenges are heightened when conducting online interviews with adolescents on sensitive topics. Thus, …

Examining Predictors Of Attitudes And Knowledge Of Registered Nurses And Nursing Students In Tennessee Toward Pregnant And Perinatal Women With A Substance Use Disorder, Jessica Patrylo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Substance use disorders (SUDs) among pregnant and perinatal women continue to be a national public health crisis. Furthermore, nursing students and perinatal nurses have historically negative and punitive attitudes toward this vulnerable population of women. As nurses are primary care providers for pregnant and perinatal women, this is troublesome as perinatal patients express feeling stigmatized by nurses whom they should be able to trust. This contributes to the reluctance of women to seek needed medical and prenatal care. Tennessee was the first state to criminalize drug use in pregnancy and has higher neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) rates, which were more …
