The Essential Characteristics Of Advocacy Associated With The Nurse-Client Relationship: The Client's Perspective, Victoria Louise Cole Schonlau Dnsc, Mpa, Bsn, Rn
Dissertations
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe clients' lived experiences of advocacy associated with the nurse-client relationship. The sample consisted of ten non-hospitalized adults, 19 to 72 years of age, who had a hospitalization or ambulatory relationship with a registered nurse within the previous six months. Data were gathered via interviews initiated with the same open-ended question. Georgi's five step method was used for data analysis. Four essential characteristics of advocacy associated with the nurse-client relationship were identified. Described by clients as nurse attributes, behaviors, and actions, they were labelled: Competent Knower, Competent Doer, Humanizer, and Communicator. Clients …

Coping Strategies And Health Locus Of Control In Women With Chronic Hypertension, Mary Ledford
MSN Research Projects
The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to determine the coping strategies most often used, their perceived effectiveness, and their correlation to health locus of control in women with chronic hypertension. The nonrandomized sample (N = 35) were women ages 35-65 years from a rural northeast Mississippi community. The subjects were primarily middle-aged, white, and of middle socioeconomic status. The theoretical framework for this study was Roy's Adaptation Model. Data collection were accomplished with the Personal Information Checklist, the Jalowiec Coping Scale, and the Health Locus of Control Scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson product …
The Relationship Between Occupational Choice And Perceptions Of Professional Nursing Functions And Characteristics, Ellis Quinn Youngkin
The Relationship Between Occupational Choice And Perceptions Of Professional Nursing Functions And Characteristics, Ellis Quinn Youngkin
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management
This study identifies the occupational interests and predominant vocational personality types of freshmen students (undeclared majors, nursing majors, and non-nursing majors), explores perceptions about selected professional nursing functions and characteristics among the students, and examines perceptual differences between groups (majors).
A non-experimental ex post facto design is used to analyze data from 312 students in a large urban university. Descriptive and inferential statistics are applied in data analysis. The following findings support the hypotheses: (1) Nursing continues to attract the traditional student who has Holland's Social vocational personality type as measured by the Self-Directed Search, although many Social types are …

The Effects Of Reminiscence Therapy On Social Interactions Of Institutionalized Elders, Lori A. Cooley
The Effects Of Reminiscence Therapy On Social Interactions Of Institutionalized Elders, Lori A. Cooley
MSN Research Projects
The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effects of reminiscence therapy on social interaction in a group of institutionalized elders. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant differences over time in social interactions as institutionalized elders participated in a reminiscence group. The sample was comprised of three elderly females in a nursing home in North Mississippi. The subjects were observed for behaviors indicating interaction during eight sessions. These sessions were conducted for 3 weeks and each one lasted approximately one hour. A trained observer recorded observations using the Social Interaction Tool. The data were submitted …

A Comparison Of Nursing Role Conceptions Among Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Their Nursing Faculty, And Clinical Nurse Mentors, Michele Lynn Musella
A Comparison Of Nursing Role Conceptions Among Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Their Nursing Faculty, And Clinical Nurse Mentors, Michele Lynn Musella
Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations
This descriptive study focused on the bureaucratic, professional, and service role conceptions of nurses. It was hypothesized that there are significant differences in the ideal and actual perceptions of these role orientations among baccalaureate nursing students, their nursing faculty, and their clinical nurse mentors. The three subscales of Pieta's 1976 Nursing Role Conception Scale (NRC) were used. The results of a discriminant analysis indicated significant differences in professional and service nursing role conceptions among students and both their nursing faculty and clinical mentors (p

Hopelessness In The Institutionalized Elderly, Joanne Hansen
Hopelessness In The Institutionalized Elderly, Joanne Hansen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The losses and stresses of the elderly make them susceptible to powerlessness which ultimately may lead to hopelessness and death. The use of client initiated interventions designed to increase the individual's control of the environment may interrupt the powerlessness, hopelessness and death cycle. The research question for this study addressed the influence of client-initiated interventions on the hopelessness score among the institutionalized elderly.
The specific research questions were:
I. To what extent do the use of client-initiated interventions affect the level of hopelessness in the institutionalized client on a short- and long-term basis?
2. Which of the client-initiated interventions have …

Ethical Decision Making By Hospital Nurses (Work Alienation), Jonathon Lawrence Cox
Ethical Decision Making By Hospital Nurses (Work Alienation), Jonathon Lawrence Cox
Wayne State University Dissertations
The hospital nurse is required to make decisions that affect the lives of patients. The American Nurses Association Code for Nurses ought to be the framework used by nurses in making those ethical decisions. The Code is not the primary basis for ethical decision making as has been shown in this and previous research. In this research the role of hospital employer, personal and professional values of staff nurses has been examined for their influence on the ethical decisions made by nurses. The nurses completed the Health Care Work Powerlessness Scale, and the Nursing Dilemmas Test and Ethical Behavior Inventory. …
Differences In Typology Among Nurses At Different Levels Of Management In Acute Care Institutions As Measured By The Mbti, Catherine Marie Devet
Differences In Typology Among Nurses At Different Levels Of Management In Acute Care Institutions As Measured By The Mbti, Catherine Marie Devet
Dissertations
This survey research study explored differences in personality types between staff nurses and nurse managers in acute care institutions (hospitals). The study tested a theory about expected differences which was based on an extensive literature review of nursing administration and type theory as developed by Jung and measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
Eight acute care institutions were selected randomly from hospitals listed by the American Hospital Association (1983) as having 400-600 beds and located in the state of Michigan but outside of Wayne County. Of the eight hospitals approached, permission to conduct the study was obtained in five. …

A Comparison Of Stress Levels And Body Weight In School-Age Children, Melissa Kent
MSN Research Projects
This descriptive study was designed to compare stress levels in school-age children according to weight category. The researcher hypothesized that when third-grade students’ scores on the Kent Stress Measurement Tool for children were compared according to weight category (underweight, appropriate weight, overweight), there would be no signifi cant difference. Sixty-four third-grade public school students participated in the study. Height and weight measurements were done, plotted on a growth percentile graph, and a weight category assigned. A researcher-designed question naire, the Kent Stress Management Tool for Children, was administered to the students. The one-way ANOVA was used to analyze the scores. …

Sexuality And The Elderly: A Study Of Knowledge And Attitudes Of Health Care Providers In A Nursing Home Setting, Leola Fielder Kirsh
MSN Research Projects
This descriptive study was designed to measure knowledge and attitudes toward sexuality of nursing home health care personnel. A researcher-designed test measuring sexual knowledge and attitudes was administered to 72 nursing home employees. These health care providers included registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nurse's aides. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant correlation between the knowledge and attitude scores of nursing home personnel on a test about sexuality in the elderly. Data were analyzed using the Pearson r_ statistic and the findings led to rejection of the null hypothesis. The researcher concluded that the more knowledge about …
