College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Background
High-quality communication in pediatric and adolescent cancer is the standard of care. Yet, we lack pediatric-specific communication measures. We designed self-report and caregiver-report communication measures for use in pediatric oncology settings.
Methods
We recruited adolescent and young adults (AYAs; 12–24 years) with cancer and parents of children and AYAs between 1 month post-diagnosis and 2 months after completing treatment. Participants completed measures including 58 questions addressing eight previously characterized communication functions. For each function, we conducted factor analysis, and assessed reliability and construct validity. Based on psychometric properties, we created final long-form (31 items) and short-form (eight items) communication …
Evaluation Of Caring Behaviors In High-Fidelity Simulation Following A Caring Concept Educational Intervention, Debra Ann Mcwilliams
Evaluation Of Caring Behaviors In High-Fidelity Simulation Following A Caring Concept Educational Intervention, Debra Ann Mcwilliams
Theses & Dissertations
Background.
Simulation has created a new paradigm in nursing education. Behaviors that demonstrate caring are important aspects of quality nursing practice. Nursing education needs to integrate opportunities to teach caring, and simulation is an ideal environment to do this. Faculty must assist nursing students to establish competence in psychomotor, cognitive, and the affective domains of learning. Many of the widely used, standardized scenarios in simulation predominantly focus on critical-thinking skills while marginalizing the demonstration of caring behaviors.
Purpose.
The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the effect of a caring concept educational intervention (CCEI) in students’ self-reported confidence …

Compassion, Oxytocin, And Simulation Experiences Among Prelicensure Nursing Students, Shelley L. Price
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Background: Compassion is a core competency and the philosophical foundation of nursing. Previous studies demonstrated that uncompassionate nursing care was associated with increased patient morbidity and mortality, prolonged illness and recovery, and missed care opportunities. However, it is unknown whether prelicensure nursing education contributes to greater compassion levels among prelicensure nursing students (PNSs). Aims: These studies addressed three research aims: (1) Describe and compare levels of compassion in first-term and last-term PNSs, (2) Determine the effects of a compassion-inducing simulation event on compassion in PNSs, as measured through a survey and biological measurement, and lastly, (3) Investigate the relationship between …

Postpartum Visitation Policies, Jenna B. Holderman, Morgan E. Matthews
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background: Continual support for the birthing person during labor improves delivery outcomes and overall childbirth experiences. How many support people are present and their relation to the birthing person varies based on individual preference, family dynamics, and sociocultural expectations. During the Covid-19 pandemic, many hospitals implemented a one-visitor policy for deliveries. With these new guidelines in place, the length of hospital stays significantly decreased, and there were a variety of opinions towards these restrictions.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore birthing persons’ overall sentiment towards visitors in the immediate postpartum period.
Methods: The current study analyzed …

Investigating The Relationship Between Consistent Workout Regimen On Quality Of Life Among Crossfitters In South Mississippi, Christian Glass
Honors Theses
Robust literature exists to support the utility of CrossFit in improving metabolic and cardiovascular well-being. However, a metaphorical chasm exists not in the study of the physiological effects of CrossFit but in the psychological effects, namely quality of life (QOL). This thesis aimed to offer an installment into this gap by investigating trends among a population of 81 CrossFitters in south Mississippi. To best fulfill this task, a quantitative study was conducted using a 32-item survey composed of a mixture of questions from the World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief Version (WHOQOL- BREF) to assess reported quality of life …

Use Of Behavior Management Training To Improve Nurses' Confidence In Managing Patient Aggression, Chasity Long
Doctoral Projects
Workplace aggression and violence toward healthcare workers are documented extensively throughout the literature and unfortunately, this behavior has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Challenges brought on by the pandemic, such as visitor restrictions and short staffing, have only exacerbated patient aggression and violence. Workplace aggression and violence can cause not only psychological or physical injury to nurses and nursing staff, but it also impacts patient care, job satisfaction, absenteeism, and nurse retention. Training programs to improve nurses’ assessment skills to predict aggressive behaviors and de-escalate violent situations can help nurses better predict and manage patient aggression. A behavior management training …
