Human Need Fulfillment Alteration In The Client With Uterine Cancer: The Registered Nurses' Perception Versus The Clients' Perception, Linda Lane Lilley

Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations

This study was a comparison of the similarities and differences between the registered nurses' perception and clients' perception of human need fulfillment alterations in the client with uterine cancer. The effect of level of educational preparation and number of years work experience on the nurses' perception was also analyzed. The participants were 15 registered nurses and 15 clients who had uterine cancer and were admitted to two acute care hospitals in Tidewater. Registered nurses were asked to complete the tool entitled Human Needs Assessment Scale and rate the 35 human needs in relation to the perceived importance for the client. …

A Study Of Loneliness And Health Related Complaints In Residents Of High Rise Apartment Buildings For The Elderly, Susan H. Jones

Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore feelings of loneliness among relocated elderly residents of age-segregated, high-rise apartment buildings and any relationship between these subjective feelings of loneliness and certain variables which were hypothesized as predictors of feelings of loneliness. The variables studied in relation to loneliness were cathectic investment, activity, and perceptions of health. A non-experimental survey design where data were collected by interviewing subjects was used. The sample consisted of 18 female residents of a high-rise apartment building for the elderly. Each was interviewed using the Loneliness Rating Scale developed by Dr. Gloria M. Francis and a …

Predictors Of Appointment-Keeping Behaviors Among Users Of Adult Medical Clinics, Ruth L. Campau

Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations

In a descriptive correlational study, three predictors of appointment keeping behaviors of adults who attend general medical clinics in a primary health care setting were explored. The three selected predictors from the Health Belief Model, a preventive health behavior model, were: (a) perceived barriers to health care, (b) health locus of control (HLC), and (c) satisfaction with health care. The purpose of this study was to identify the predictive value of multiple variables for a specific health-related behavior. Data on the study were collected on a non-probability, purposive sample of 52 users of the adult general medical clinics. The tool …

Trait Anxiety In Female Heads Of Household, Bonnie Martinette Wheeler Apr 1984

Trait Anxiety In Female Heads Of Household, Bonnie Martinette Wheeler

Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if being the female head of a single-parent household was associated with increased trait anxiety. Ninety-four female nurses completed the Trait portion of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory developed by Spielberger, Gorsuch, and Lushene (1964) and a demographic inventory. The demographic inventory provided the information regarding marital status and presence or absence of children needed to delineate the sample into four groups: Group I (n=31) married females with dependent children in the home; Group II (n=10) married females with no dependent children in the home; Group III (n=26) single, separated or divorced females …

The Effect Of Social Support On The Blood Pressure Of Mild And Moderate Hypertensives, Edith Price Vaughan Jan 1984

The Effect Of Social Support On The Blood Pressure Of Mild And Moderate Hypertensives, Edith Price Vaughan

Theses and Dissertations

The study was conducted to determine the relationship between social support and the blood pressure of mild and moderate hypertensives. Motivation for the study was derived from the growing realization that the social support of an individual has a far-reaching effect on illness and health and that little research has been done concerning the specific effect that social support has on blood pressure.

The Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire (NSSQ) was administered to a convenience sample of 30 subjects selected from among the hypertensive clients of the Family Practice Clinic and General Medical Clinic located in the Peninsula Health Center. The …

The Relationship Between Oral Contraceptives And Intraepithelial Neoplasia Of The Uterine Cervix, Barbara Jeannette Fox

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between specific oral contraceptive use and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and to determine if duration of use and content of oral contraceptives were related to CIN. The hypotheses tested in this study were: (1) norgestrel-containing oral contraceptives are associated with more severe levels of CIN, and (2) longer duration of oral contraceptive use is associated with more severe CIN.

Data was collected from 52 clinical records of clients who attended a colposcopy clinic during a four month period. Clients included in the study were utilizing one of five specific oral …

Staff Nurses' Self-Esteem As It Relates To Working In Specialty Areas, Donna Lynn Evans Jan 1984

Staff Nurses' Self-Esteem As It Relates To Working In Specialty Areas, Donna Lynn Evans

Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations

This study compared the levels of self-esteem of hospital staff nurses working in specialty areas versus those working in general medical-surgical areas. Fifty registered nurses employed full-time in staff positions at a large, acute-care hospital participated in the study. After indicating the area of the hospital in which they worked, the type of education they had, and the number of years of experience as a registered nurse, they then completed the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale. Scores were then compared using independent t-tests applied to the area in which the subject worked, the type of education, and the years of experience. Results …

Effects Of Biofeedback-Aided Relaxation On The Psychological Stress Symptoms Of College Students, Richard J. Fehring

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of Benson's relaxation technique (BRT) with Benson's technique augmented with GSR biofeedback (i.e., biofeedback-aided relaxation, BAR) on the psychological stress symptoms of well college students. Seventy-eight normotensive college students were randomly assigned to one of three groups: the BRT group, the BAR group, and a control group. The BRT and BAR students were asked to practice their respective relaxation technique daily for an eight-week period. Pre-and postintervention, all subjects were administered a state-anxiety inventory and a profile-of-mood state (POMS) test. Posttest analysis indicated that the BAR group had significantly lower …
