Effect Of Proximal Thermal/Pressure Cutaneous Stimulation On The Discomfort Of Intramuscular Injection, Michael Edward Desrocher Jan 1987

Effect Of Proximal Thermal/Pressure Cutaneous Stimulation On The Discomfort Of Intramuscular Injection, Michael Edward Desrocher

Masters Theses

The discomfort from receiving an intramuscular injection is pain that may be reduced by proper nursing intervention if the gate control theory is applied. A group of 71 adult preoperative patients were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. The experimental group received a warm (43.5{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C), 800 gram pack proximal to the site of injection. The control and experimental group scores were compared using a Mann-Whitney U test of significance for the intervention. The intervention was not significant in reducing the discomfort from an intramuscular injection at the.05 level.

The Relationship Between Role Supplementation And The Level Of Marital Functioning In Couples Living With Cardiac Disease, Laurie Ann Demull-Bok Jan 1987

The Relationship Between Role Supplementation And The Level Of Marital Functioning In Couples Living With Cardiac Disease, Laurie Ann Demull-Bok

Masters Theses

Eighteen couples experiencing the onset of heart disease (Myocardial Infarction or Coronary Artery Bypass Graft procedure) participated in this study. Nine couples participated in a role supplementation program consisting of role modeling and role discussion. Role modeling was facilitated by exposure to a role model couple in a group situation. The role discussion component utilized a tool that allowed each partner to identify his/her responsibility for the treatment plan.;The hypothesis of the study was that couples who participated in a role supplementation program would have a higher level of marital functioning than couples who did not participate in role supplementation. …

The Relationship Between Functional Disability Of Chronic Low Back Pain To Depression, Janice Ellen Looman Jan 1987

The Relationship Between Functional Disability Of Chronic Low Back Pain To Depression, Janice Ellen Looman

Masters Theses

This study is proposed for the purpose of determining if a relationship exists between the functional disability of chronic low back pain (LBP) to depression. In the investigation a random sample of 40-50 clients from area back clinics, at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center and Butterworth Hospital will be selected. The clients who have had LBP over six months will be asked to take a modified Dartmouth Pain Questionnaire (DPQ) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The modified DPQ includes two parts relating to the client's self perception and activity level prior to the LBP event. The self-administered BDI which measures …

The Effects Of Aquatic Exercise On Self-Concept In The Elderly, Ok Chon Allison

MSN Research Projects

This quasi-experimental research study examined the effects of the aquatic exercise on self-concept in the elderly. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant difference in self-concept between elders who participated in an aquatic exercise program and elders who did not participate. A researcher-designed demographic data form and the Tennessee Self Concept Scale were used to collect pertinent data. A total of 22 subjects from two cities 30 miles apart participated in the study. Ten white female subjects were in the experimental group and 9 white and 3 black females were in the control group. The total positive self-concept …

Relationship Of Admission Variables To Success For Licensed Practical Nurses In Associate Degree In Nursing Ladder Program, Sally Kathryn Johnson Aug 1986

Relationship Of Admission Variables To Success For Licensed Practical Nurses In Associate Degree In Nursing Ladder Program, Sally Kathryn Johnson

Dissertations

The problem and challenge for nurse educators in Practical Nursing/Associate Degree Nursing (PN/ADN) ladder programs is to identify admission criteria for Licensed Practical Nurse (PN) applicants entering the advanced standing level. The selected admission criteria should include those which are most likely to indicate success in the program and on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN). Identifying such criteria would promote the most efficient use of scarce educational resources and help avoid loss of time, energy and financial resources for potential nursing students.

The records of 79 LPNs who entered a PN/ADN ladder program at the advanced …

A Survey Of Menstrual Symptoms Of Obese Women, Ruthie Smith Aug 1986

A Survey Of Menstrual Symptoms Of Obese Women, Ruthie Smith

MSN Research Projects

A descriptive study was conducted to survey females who are obese and determine what problems they encounter with menses. The researcher hypothesized that when obese women are surveyed about menstrual problems and the degree of obesity is correlated to the presence of menstrual problems, there would be no significant correlation. In order to facilitate testing of this hypothesis, two operational hypotheses were drafted. The first operational hypothesis was that when the total number of menstrual problems was correlated with the degree of obesity there would be no significant correlation. The second operational hypothesis was that when menstrual problems were individually …

The Relationship Between Functional Impairment And Self-Concept In The Elderly Witih Chronic Illness, Larry Loden

MSN Research Projects

This was a descriptive study designed to determine the relationship of functional impairment and self-concept of elderly clients with chronic illness. The null hypothesis stated that when the clients' scores on the Functional Assessment Form and Tennessee Self-Concept Scale were compared, there would be no significant correlation at the .05 significance level. Data were collected from 15 subjects who were 65 years of age or over, had a chronic illness, and were receiving the services of a home health agency. All subjects were administered the Functional Assessment Form and the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale. These scores were then compared utilizing the …

Use Of Two Data Collection Strategies To Evaluate Stressors And Coping In Spouses Of Patients Sustaining A Myocardial Infarction, Pamalla Manz Stockho

Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations

This study compared stressors and coping mechanisms identified by spouses of myocardial infarction (MI) patients in a close-ended, self-administered questionnaire (SAS) and an open-ended, nurse-administered questionnaire (NAS). Twenty female participants were divided into two groups and completed the NAS, SAS, and demographic information. The purpose of dividing the group was to explore possible experimenter effect. One group was administered the NAS preceding the SAS. The second group completed the SAS preceding the NAS. Qualitative analysis revealed equivalent stressors and coping mechanisms identified by the NAS and SAS. Stressors related to the MI decreased over time for spouses whose husbands made …
