Policy Addressing Family Presence During Resuscitation, Crystal Emanuel-Hayes
Policy Addressing Family Presence During Resuscitation, Crystal Emanuel-Hayes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
When hospitals became the primary care setting for very ill patients, visiting hours and restrictions related to family presence during resuscitation (FPDR) became common. During medical crises that occur in hospital settings, families are separated from loved ones because family members may impair resuscitation efforts or such efforts might psychologically traumatize family members. Various national health care organizations have endorsed family presence during resuscitation; however, practices preventing family presence persist. This project used evidence from the peer-reviewed literature to develop a healthcare institution policy that addresses family presence during resuscitation. Theories, concepts, and models that guided this DNP project included: …

Addressing Spiritual Care Needs In Primary Care, Olayinka Akerele-Olufidipe
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This DNP project focused on the spiritual aspects of care that are often neglected in the outpatient setting. Most patients value their spiritual health and believe that it is just as important as their mental and physical health. The purpose of this project was to improve the overall spiritual care provided to patients, their families, and/or caregivers in times when they were experiencing spiritual distress. This quality improvement (QI) project was designed to determine whether embedding a chaplain in an outpatient clinic instead of providing a pamphlet about chaplain services increases patient satisfaction. Secondary analysis of the data in this …

Inpatient Hospice Home: A Needs Assessment And Business Plan, Stacey Middleton
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project
An Abstract of the Scholarly Project by
Stacey Middleton
There are two constants that every person can count on in life, being born and dying. No amount of research is required, and there is no need to challenge the inevitable. When a child is born, people celebrate and congratulate the new parents and their family. When a person dies, people are saddened by the loss of a friend and loved one. Death comes to all and is either, fast and unexpected or a slow drawn out process. Every dying patient deserves to die with dignity, be free from pain, and …
Spirituality In Clinical Practice: Recognizing The Importance Of Personal Values And Beliefs In Medical Decision-Making, Katie Lutz
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project addresses the importance of values and beliefs in patient’s healthcare decisions. Relying on a holistic theoretical model that accounts for all aspects of the human experience, the focus shifts from standard healthcare delivery to exploration of spiritual values and beliefs. In the past two decades, researchers and healthcare professionals have juxtaposed healthcare and spirituality to broaden the domain of care and enrich the provider and patient experience. Evidence has shown the alliance of spirituality and clinical practice has the potential to improve wellbeing and healthcare outcomes.

To Heal, Escape: Using Theatre Arts To Promote Holistic Health In The Clinical Setting, John Filegar
To Heal, Escape: Using Theatre Arts To Promote Holistic Health In The Clinical Setting, John Filegar
Senior Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to provide an argument for the implementation of theatre arts therapy in the clinical setting. The effects of traditional art therapies involving visual arts, expressive arts, and music on the holistic health of the patient in the clinical setting have been thoroughly researched and understood. However, the extent of the influence of theatre arts therapy on the holistic health of individuals in the clinical setting lacks sufficient evidence and therefore cannot be compared to the influence of traditional art therapies on the holistic health of individuals in the same setting. Following an overview on …

Preparing For The Merit-Based Incentive Payment Structure: A Value-Based Business Plan, Ali R. Saheb
Preparing For The Merit-Based Incentive Payment Structure: A Value-Based Business Plan, Ali R. Saheb
Doctoral Projects
The notion of delivering value-based care while maintaining corporate vitality in health care is a multifaceted process. Shaping a business model to reflect this process requires the alignment of quality implications, reimbursement initiatives, a framework that takes into account stipulations on reimbursement for different types of clinicians, and an understanding and preparedness for emerging guidelines and nationally recognized structures for quality indicators. When organizations recognize the need for change, but are not yet prepared to implement it, a comprehensive business plan can help the organization visualize a path to success. In this project, the foundation of requirements for a value-based …

Transition To Practice Experience: The Impact On Newly Licensed Rn Performance, Patricia P. Lawson
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This quantitative non-experimental descriptive correlational design sought to answer the question if there was a difference in newly licensed RN (NLRN) performance at one-year post hire after participation in a nurse residency program that offers a formalized curriculum that extends throughout the entire year, one that offers a formalized curriculum that does not extend throughout the entire year, or one that does not provide a formalized curriculum. The study utilized the Six Dimension Scale of Nursing Performance (SDNP) and evaluated NLRN performance on six subscales: leadership, critical care, teaching/collaboration, planning/evaluation, interpersonal relations/communication, and professional development at one-year post hire. Compassion Fatigue In Medical Surgical Nurses, Ashlee Nicole Simmons
Compassion Fatigue In Medical Surgical Nurses, Ashlee Nicole Simmons
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
Often nurses are consumed by providing care to others and forget to care for themselves. The lack of self-care can lead to compassion fatigue in the nurse's life. The purpose of this thesis was to assess the level of compassion fatigue within medical surgical nurses, and determine the correlation between years of experience as a registered nurse and compassion fatigue. The Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL-5) was used to identify the existence of compassion fatigue in medical surgical nurses. Data was collected and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Seventy-five medical surgical nurses working in an acute …

This final capstone project inquiry report presents three manuscripts which focus on the reduction of preoperative anxiety in adolescents facing spinal fusion surgery. The first manuscript is a literature review examining current evidence related to preoperative anxiety, adolescents undergoing spinal fusion surgery, and teaching programs aimed …
Simulation Using A Standardized Patient To Measure Perception And Congruency Of Spiritual Care For A Veteran From Three Perspectives To Inform Nursing Education And Practice, Mary E. Desmond
Dissertations
Spiritual care refers to a purposeful process of helping another find meaning and purpose
in life through a mutual connection. Providing spiritual care is a professional nursing mandate, yet nurses report barriers in education and practice. Veterans want spiritual care to promote quality of life, and to cope with military experiences and chronic conditions. Patients report receiving less than desired spiritual care and nurses report infrequent provision of spiritual care. It is also unclear how congruent patients and nurses are in their perceptions of spiritual care. A spiritual care simulation and performance checklist was developed using a review of the …

Educating Nurses About Spirituality's Effects On Quality Of Life With Chronic Illness, April Gant
Educating Nurses About Spirituality's Effects On Quality Of Life With Chronic Illness, April Gant
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Spirituality has been associated with wholeness, inner peace, and key elements of well-being or quality of life. Spirituality support is particularly important for patients with chronic illness and patients who view spirituality as a way of coping with suffering. Evidence-based education is lacking in schools of nursing and in places of nursing employment on spirituality interventions that nurses can use to improve patient quality of life. The purpose of this project was to determine whether an educational intervention would increase knowledge of spiritual care in a small sample of clinic nurses (n = 37). This project used Watson's caring theory, …
