Increasing Nurses’ Knowledge Of Cultural Preferences Influencing Diabetes Self-Management Among Sierra Leoneans, Winstina Aminata Taylor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The practice problem identified at the project site was the lack of nurses’ knowledge of how cultural preferences influence diabetes self-management practices among African Americans with diabetes mellitus. An educational program focused on the cultural preferences of Sierra Leoneans that influence diabetes self-management practices was provided for 48 nurses who worked in the agency. The doctoral project included concepts from nursing education and cultural competence theories to inform the approach. The project followed the ADDIE model process steps to develop and implement the educational program. The sources of evidence included pre- and posteducation surveys administered to participating nurses to assess …

Determining The Impact Of A Diabetes Logbook In Improving Self-Care Among African Americans With Type 2 Diabetes, Winifred Moore
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Type 2 diabetes is a prevalent chronic disorder that is associated with defects in the metabolism of glucose. The management of type 2 diabetes depends on patients’ adherence to self-care activities. However, patients at the project site reported poor glycemic control, which increased their risk of diabetes complications. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to educate nursing staff on the use of diabetes logbooks to improve self-care among African Americans with type 2 diabetes and thereafter have the nursing staff educate diabetic patients. A quasi-experimental pre-post-intervention design involving 30 African American adults (mean age 43.70 years) with uncontrolled …

Using Self-Assessment Tools And Complementary Alternative Therapy For Chronic Migraines In Menopausal Women, Krystal Rachelle Bridwell
Using Self-Assessment Tools And Complementary Alternative Therapy For Chronic Migraines In Menopausal Women, Krystal Rachelle Bridwell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
Migraine headaches are ranked as one of the highest disabling conditions in the United States. Women who are in the perimenopausal transition phase have a higher prevalence of disabling migraines that can result in a decreased quality of life, loss of income, decreased productivity, and a higher risk for emotional difficulties. The gap in practice is the lack of education on complementary alternative medicine (CAM) and the use of a migraine diary to recognize individual symptoms as a substitute or cotherapy with pharmacologic treatments. The purpose of this scholarly project was to improve clinical practice and outcomes for perimenopausal …

The effective contents were classified into two major categories: effects on interpersonal relationships, and effects attributable to the physical and emotional aspects of the lives of the children. The medical staff involved were mainly occupational therapists, followed by physical therapists and speech-language pathologists. The included studies also mention the involvement of trained equine therapists and volunteers, but not the involvement of …
Improving Obesity And Related Chronic Disease Outcomes: Developing Nurse Practitioner Competence In Motivational Interviewing, Jodi Wilson
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Background: Despite America’s persistent focus on health, over 40% of the US population is obese. A significant obstacle to mitigating disease in those with obesity is inspiring lasting behavioral change. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is highly effective yet under-utilized for catalyzing personal change inertia. Recent meta-analyses demonstrated statistically significant improvement in BMI, A1C, and blood pressure. Objectives: This evidenced-based project (EBP) aimed to develop nurse practitioner (NP) skills in deploying fidelity-based MI, resulting in increased adherence to lifestyle interventions. Implementation: This EBP project implemented MI into routine primary care through a self-paced healthcare provider MI certification and a 45-minute skill …

Evaluation Of Breastfeeding Interventions To Improve Duration In Women At Risk For Breastfeeding Attrition, Anthonia Anukam
Evaluation Of Breastfeeding Interventions To Improve Duration In Women At Risk For Breastfeeding Attrition, Anthonia Anukam
The Corinthian
Children that are optimally breastfed have the healthiest start in life. The World Health Organization and the CDC recommend that mothers optimally breastfeed. Benefits of breastfeeding to children include the receipt of antibodies, reduction of ear, respiratory, and gastrointestinal infections, decreased sudden infant death syndrome, allergies, diabetes, and childhood leukemia. Several research studies have reported a strong positive correlation between breastfeeding and reduced infant morbidity and mortality. Evidence illustrates that the health benefits from breastfeeding are dose-dependent, thus the longer the breastfeeding duration the greater the acquisition of the enumerated benefits. However, premature cessation of breastfeeding less than the WHO …
