Women's Perception Of Heart Disease As A Health Risk Associated With Identified Risk Factors, Kathy Mckay Aug 1995

Women's Perception Of Heart Disease As A Health Risk Associated With Identified Risk Factors, Kathy Mckay

MSN Research Projects

Heart disease has been identified as the leading cause of death in women in the United States, affecting an estimated 21,000 women under the age of 65. While these figures are alarming, population survey data have shown women do not perceive heart disease as a priority health problem- The purpose of this descriptive study was to investigate women's perception of heart disease as a health risk. The Health Belief Model served as the theoretical framework for this study. Two research questions guided this study: Is there a significant correlation between selected demographic variables and perception of heart disease as a …

Health Promotion Lifestyle Behaviors Of African American Women In A Rural Setting, Phyllis Polk Johnson Jul 1995

Health Promotion Lifestyle Behaviors Of African American Women In A Rural Setting, Phyllis Polk Johnson

MSN Research Projects

A complete understanding of health promoting behavior patterns has not been achieved by health care professionals. The lack of understanding of health promoting behavior patterns is particularly true in relation to African American women. The lack of understanding is in part due to the limited research conducted regarding health care practices among minority populations. The purpose of this descriptive study was to describe the health promoting lifestyle behaviors of African American women in a rural setting in Mississippi. The Madeleine Leninger Cultural Care Theory was used as the theoretical framework for this study. Data were collected utilizing the Health Promotion …

Energy Expenditure During Antiorthostatic Bed Rest (Simulated Microgravity), Randall J. Gretebeck, Dale A. Schoeller, Everett K. Gibson, Helen W. Lane Jun 1995

Energy Expenditure During Antiorthostatic Bed Rest (Simulated Microgravity), Randall J. Gretebeck, Dale A. Schoeller, Everett K. Gibson, Helen W. Lane

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Few studies have addressed the interaction between energy balance and lean body mass in healthy subjects during spaceflight or its simulations. We used doubly labeled water to measure total energy expenditure (TEE) in nine healthy adult men during two 7-day periods, once before and once during a 10-day head-down bed-rest period. Mean TEE was 21% less during than before bed rest; however, neither basal (BEE) nor resting (REE) energy expenditures changed, implying that the lesser TEE resulted from a reduction in physical activity. During the bed-rest period, energy intake was 563 +/- 280 kcal/day higher than TEE (P < 0.05) but body weight, fluid balance, BEE, and REE did not change relative to before bed rest. However, the small but statistically significant increase in body fat (0.44 +/- 0.67 kg, P < 0.05) during the bed-rest period suggests that body weight alone does not accurately reflect changes in energy balance during antiorthostatic bed rest.

Personal Interviews Vs. Awareness: A Health Promotion Program For Behavior Change, Elizabeth Klein Apr 1995

Personal Interviews Vs. Awareness: A Health Promotion Program For Behavior Change, Elizabeth Klein

Honors Theses

In the United States, heart disease is currently the number one cause of death in the adult population (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1991). Unlike many of the major causes of death, heart disease is largely preventable through changes in health related behaviors. Although a portion of heart disease risk is attributed to genetics, the primary cause of heart disease development lies in the eating habits, exercise behaviors, and smoking habits of the individual.

The Scope And Practice Of Rural Nurse Practitioners In Central Illinois, Lisa L. Lovegren Jan 1995

The Scope And Practice Of Rural Nurse Practitioners In Central Illinois, Lisa L. Lovegren

Honors Projects

In today's atmosphere of escalating health care costs, limited access to health care, and changes in the health care delivery systems, it is necessary to evaluate the roles and responsibilities of non physician health care providers. The advanced Nurse Practitioner is one such health care professional who currently provides vital services to the public. However, utilization of Nurse Practitioners has been limited within Illinois. The purpose of this study was to: 1) examine current perceived roles of rural Central Illinois Nurse Practitioners, and 2) determine perceived practice-related changes and trends for the future.

Prediction Of In-Hospital Delirium In Elderly Hip Fracture Patients Using Family Assessment Of Pre-Morbid Cognitive Behaviors, Ronell R. Ruhlandt Jan 1995

Prediction Of In-Hospital Delirium In Elderly Hip Fracture Patients Using Family Assessment Of Pre-Morbid Cognitive Behaviors, Ronell R. Ruhlandt

Masters Theses

The elderly are the fastest growing segment of the population in the United States. Elderly persons are at high risk for developing delirium when hospitalized. The purpose of this study was to determine if pre-morbid cognitive behaviors were predictive of in-hospital delirium in elderly hip-fracture patients. The ability to predict or diagnose delirium early could prevent complications during hospitalization and decrease the length of hospital stays. The study was descriptive correlational. Subjects were admitted to a metropolitan teaching hospital during February through August 1993, were 60 years or older, and were diagnosed with hip fracture. Admission assessments included the Cognitive …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Registered Nurse Time Spent In Direct Care Activities, Nursing Skill Mix And Patient Perceptions Of Nurse Caring, Jeanne L. Roode Jan 1995

A Study Of The Relationship Between Registered Nurse Time Spent In Direct Care Activities, Nursing Skill Mix And Patient Perceptions Of Nurse Caring, Jeanne L. Roode

Masters Theses

There is a need for nurse administrators to understand how the use of nursing resources impacts the quality of patient care. A descriptive correlational research design was used to examine the relationship between R.N. time spent in direct care activities, nursing skill mix and patient perceptions of nurse caring. A secondary analysis was conducted using data previously collected as part of a large-scale data set from a 529 bed community teaching hospital. The data consisted of 76,491 activity samples obtained through work sampling of 16 nursing units, 2 categories of unit skill mix measurements, and a Caring Behaviors Inventory completed …

The Impact Of Delirium On Mental Status And Physical Functioning Of The Hip Fracture Patient One To One And One Half Years Post-Injury, Delores L. Arendsen Jan 1995

The Impact Of Delirium On Mental Status And Physical Functioning Of The Hip Fracture Patient One To One And One Half Years Post-Injury, Delores L. Arendsen

Masters Theses

Delirium occurs frequently among hospitalized hip fractured elders. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a delirious episode on physical and mental status of those patients 12-18 months post-injury. This ex post facto correlational study utilized Levine's Conservation Principles as the conceptual framework. The sample consisted of 67 subjects age 60 or older. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Katz Index of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) were administered on admission and by telephone at the post-injury interview. The Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) Diagnostic Instrument was used to assess for the syndrome of delirium. Eleven (16%) …

Perceived Stress And Health-Promoting Behaviors In Nursing Students Using Pender's Health Promotion Model, Gail E. Dunham Jan 1995

Perceived Stress And Health-Promoting Behaviors In Nursing Students Using Pender's Health Promotion Model, Gail E. Dunham

Masters Theses

The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to add support to the literature that there is a relationship between the perceived stress (Student Stress Inventory) that nursing students report and their practice of health-promoting behaviors (Health Promoting Lifestyle Inventory). A convenience sample of 36 first-year associate degree nursing students was obtained. The conceptual framework used was Pender's Health Promotion Model. No relationships were found between demographic variables and perceived stress. Results indicated that subjects reported they engaged in health-promoting behaviors more than sometimes and they perceived themselves overall as slightly stressed. A negative correlation between perceived stress and health-promoting …

African American Nurses' Perceptions Of Social Support Available During Graduate School, Jacquelyn Denese Pettis Jan 1995

African American Nurses' Perceptions Of Social Support Available During Graduate School, Jacquelyn Denese Pettis

This study examined African American nurses' perceptions of social support available during graduate school that contributed to their completion of graduate studies. A descriptive correlational research design using a mailed questionnaire was employed for the study. The sample consisted of 91 African American nurses who were women and had completed graduate studies within the United States. A modified Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire (Norbeck, Lindsey, & Carrieri, 1981) was used to collect the data.; Data analysis consisted of reporting means, standard deviations, and range of scores for perceived social support available. Pearson's correlations and t-test were used to examine significant differences …

Relationship Between Coping Strategies And Perceived Quality Of Life In Icd Recipients, Jacquelyn M. Oliai Jan 1995

Relationship Between Coping Strategies And Perceived Quality Of Life In Icd Recipients, Jacquelyn M. Oliai

Masters Theses

A descriptive, correlational design was used to examine the relationship between use of the 8 coping strategies as identified by Jalowiec (1987) and quality of life (QOL). In addition, relationships and differences among demographic variables and stressors, as well as answers to open ended questions were examined. Thirty-nine Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) recipients who were {dollar}\ge{dollar}1 year post implant completed the Jalowiec Coping Scale, a revised Quality of Life Index Scale, and an informational questionnaire. Betty Neuman's conceptual framework for nursing provided the theoretical framework for this study.; There were no statistically significant results found from the data of this …

The Impact Of Total Hip Replacement, Teri L. Holwerda Jan 1995

The Impact Of Total Hip Replacement, Teri L. Holwerda

Masters Theses

This descriptive, correlational study replicated an investigation by Selman (1989) exploring the effects of Total Hip Replacement (THR) on quality of life to identify adaptation level in the four effector modes of Roy's Adaptation Model: physiologic function, self-concept, role function and interdependence. The convenience sample consisted of 43 subjects with a mean age of 67 electing to undergo primary TBR at one 410-bed midwestern medical center July, 1994 through December, 1994. Subjects were tested prior to undergoing THR and four months postoperatively. The instrument used was the Arthritis Impact Measurement Scales (AIMS) an arthritis-specific, self-administered questionnaire.; Analysis of data revealed …

Factors Influencing Western Australian Clinical Registered Nurses In Discharge Planning, S. R. Suiter Jan 1995

Factors Influencing Western Australian Clinical Registered Nurses In Discharge Planning, S. R. Suiter

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

A descriptive quantitative study was conducted to determine what factors nurses considered when discharge planning, and how these factors compared with factors identified in the literature as being effective in planning for discharge. This study was undertaken because with the intended Prospective Payment System (PPS) of funding to hospitals, it is essential that Western Australian Clinical Registered Nurses are able to prepare patients for discharge effectively to prevent the financial burden of cost outliers and re-admissions. Anderson and Steinberg ( 1984) in their studies of factors that influence the cost of hospital care for the elderly, found that the results …
