Impact Of A Multidisciplinary Education Class On Knowledge And Health-Promoting Behaviors In Persons With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In Rural Mississippi, Carmen Leigh Parks Aug 1998

Impact Of A Multidisciplinary Education Class On Knowledge And Health-Promoting Behaviors In Persons With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In Rural Mississippi, Carmen Leigh Parks

MSN Research Projects

Prevalence rates of known diabetes mellitus continue to increase in the United States. However, studies show that people can reduce their risks of long-term complications by maintaining adequate blood sugar control. Good metabolic control, however, can be very difficult for persons with diabetes because it requires knowledge, motivation, lifestyle adjustments, close monitoring, and ongoing support from a health care team. The purpose of this quasi-experimental pretest/posttest study was to determine the impact of a multidisciplinary education class on knowledge and health-promoting behaviors in persons with type 2 diabetes in rural Mississippi. Pender's Health Promotion Model was used as the theoretical …

The Effects Of Two Teaching Methodologies On Knowledge Of Insulin Administration Practices In An Older Adult Group, Clara D.J. Pieh

MSN Research Projects

Approximately 11 million people are affected with acute and chronic complications of diabetes. An estimated $20 billion is spent annually on the diagnosis and management of diabetes. Client adherence to self-care practice is essential to the control of diabetes. The self-care practice of injecting insulin is imperative for the management of both patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Teaching modalities which effectively increase patient knowledge about insulin administration need to be developed and implemented. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether individualized instructions or audiovisual instructions increased the knowledge of insulin administration practices in older …

Diabetes is a chronic disease which affects a significant portion of the United States population. Effective management requires adherence to a prescribed dietary regimen. Many diabetics have difficulty adhering to their recommended diet. This descriptive study explored diabetic diet adherence in older adults. The following research question guided the study: What are the factors that affect diabetic diet adherence in older adults? Sr. Callista Roy's adaptation theory provided direction for the study. Thirty two diabetic patients age 45 years and older in Louisiana comprised the sample. The sample included rural and urban patients of a home health agency and a …

Alternative Health Practices Of Homebound Adults In Northeast Mississippi, Jenny Barnes Aug 1998

Alternative Health Practices Of Homebound Adults In Northeast Mississippi, Jenny Barnes

MSN Research Projects

More people are relying on alternative practices and less conventional therapies for a wide variety of problems. Alternative therapies have gained increasing popularity, recognition, and usage in the past decade. Minimal knowledge exists regarding the alternative health care practices of the essentially homebound population who may be more likely to use alternative forms of health care due to the difficulty in leaving home and in following with certain cultural beliefs and practices. The focus of this descriptive study was to describe the alternative health practices of home health clients and how these practices may effect care in the primary care …

Being Alone: The Experience Of Elderly Homebound Females, Sharon Davis Burt Dnsc, Msn, Rn May 1998

Being Alone: The Experience Of Elderly Homebound Females, Sharon Davis Burt Dnsc, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

Elderly women comprise one of the fastest growing segments of the population in the United States. This growth is due in large part to increasing longevity, and a woman's life expectancy has now reached 79 years. However, along with those added years comes an increase in morbidity and a greater likelihood of living alone. This study describes the life experience of a specific group of elderly women, those who are homebound and living alone. When elderly women are included in research, the same combination of descriptors used for the participants in this study has not been incorporated. Consequently, while much …

Self-Reported Energy Intake And Energy Expenditure In Elderly Women, Randall J. Gretebeck, R. A. Boileau May 1998

Self-Reported Energy Intake And Energy Expenditure In Elderly Women, Randall J. Gretebeck, R. A. Boileau

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The elderly are a growing population; however, limited information concerning energy requirements of the elderly is available. Dietary intake data have been collected in research and clinical settings to determine the intakes of energy and nutrients, but the accuracy of dietary intake data has been difficult to verify. Studies using doubly labeled water have suggested that dietary energy intake is underreported by obese subjects (1), adolescents (2), and athletes (3). Diet records were collected for 6 to 14 days in these studies (1), (2), (3). Elderly subjects have also underreported energy intake compared with total energy expenditure (TEE), either measured …

The Relationship Between Rural Low-Income Women's Knowledge And Short-Term Duration Of Breastfeeding, Jefferey J.A. Enstad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although patterns of breastfeeding initiation and duration among American women have made dramatic changes over the past 100 years, these patterns have not been studied in rural, low-income women. Furthermore, even less is known about the characteristics of rural low-income women who practice short-term breastfeeding. Therefore, the problem under investigation was to explore the relationship between rural low-income women's knowledge and short-term duration of breastfeeding. The objectives of the study were to: 1) describe what are the characteristics of rural low-income women who breastfeed for four or more weeks postpartum, 2) describe what sources did they receive breastfeeding instruction and …

A descriptive design with a one group paired t-test was used to analyze the differences …

Predicting The Severity Of Radiation Skin Reactions In Women With Breast Cancer, Davina Porock Jan 1998

Predicting The Severity Of Radiation Skin Reactions In Women With Breast Cancer, Davina Porock

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Skin reactions are unavoidable side effects of radiotherapy for breast cancer that may limit the amount of treatment a patient is able to receive. As well, the discomfort associated with the treatment may negatively affect the patient's quality of life and their willingness to complete a course of treatment that typically extends over seven weeks. Prior literature suggests that variations in patients' tissue reactions to radiation may be related to Individual patient characteristics. Before health care providers can intervene to prevent or minimise skin reactions, a clinical model that helps predict which patients will experience more skin reactions is needed. …

The Effectiveness Of A Strength Training Program On Extremity Strength, Flexibility, And Balance Of Elderly Women, Patricia L. Murphy Jan 1998

The Effectiveness Of A Strength Training Program On Extremity Strength, Flexibility, And Balance Of Elderly Women, Patricia L. Murphy

Master's Projects

This quasi-experimental study, partially replicating that of Nelson and Wernick (1997), compares balance, flexibility, and extremity strength before and after an 8-week weight-bearing exercise class. Six women, aged 69 to 85, used 1-5 pound wrist weights and ankle weights up to 1 o pounds. Pre-and post-exercise measurements of biceps curls, seated leg lifts with weights, one leg stand, and seated stretches were gathered. Results showed improvement in every category, with the greatest improvement (41.6%) in balance and the least (8.3%) in trunk flexibility. Nursing is uniquely positioned to assist this population by promoting, developing, and implementing such exercise programs.
