Triggers And Their Influence On Health Behaviors, Christine S. Gipson
Triggers And Their Influence On Health Behaviors, Christine S. Gipson
Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article provides a conceptual definition of the concept trigger within the context of health behaviors and applies it to the highly significant health issue of obesity. Healthy behaviors are essential to life and happiness, but they do not just happen. They are triggered, and an inner drive keeps them alive. To help patients gain and retain optimal health, nurses must understand the triggers of healthy behaviors. Walker and Avant’s (2011) method of concept analysis is used as the basis for defining the concept of trigger. The antecedents, defining attributes, and consequences of trigger are identified. Findings suggest that nurses …

Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention In 18 To 24-Year-Old Heterosexual Men: Pilot Study, Susan P. Mckeefrey
Doctoral Projects
The CDC reported that there were over 20 million cases in the United States and half affected young adults, 15 to 25-year olds. Strategies STD prevention have been developed by the CDC but does not include avoiding alcohol or other similar agents in the context of a sexual encounter. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of STD prevention education intervention by improving Condom Use Self-Efficacy in heterosexually 18 to 24-year old men. It was hypothesized self-efficacy would improve with a face-to-face brief educational intervention. A quasi-experimental, pre-/post-test design with simple randomization of subjects into control and …

The Implementation Gap Between Evidence-Based Guidelines And Primary Care Providers' Provision Of Care For Adult Obese Individuals, Linda Ailene Hagemann
The Implementation Gap Between Evidence-Based Guidelines And Primary Care Providers' Provision Of Care For Adult Obese Individuals, Linda Ailene Hagemann
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Adult obesity has become a significant problem in the United States. To reduce health consequences and the rising cost of obesity, evidence-based guidelines to identify and treat obesity are available to primary care providers (PCPs). Despite literature supporting favorable outcomes by PCPs who address obesity at a patient's visit, studies indicate obesity counseling is occurring infrequently, particularly in military primary care settings.
Guided by the Diffusion of Innovations Theory, this research utilization project evaluated whether there is an implementation gap between use of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Defense (DoD) Clinical Practice Guideline for Screening and …
The Impact Of Teach-Back As A Patient Education Tool In Women With Inadequate Maternal Health Literacy Seeking Immunizations For Their Children, Barbara Jared
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Health literacy is recognized as a contributor to health outcomes and maternal health literacy is important to the health and wellbeing of children and families. Of particular interest are mothers seeking immunization services for their children. The complexity of the recommended immunization schedule and the care management of children receiving immunizations have the potential to create negative health outcomes in the low health literate population. Assessment of maternal health literacy and provision of effective patient education adapted to the health literacy level of the individual is important for information transfer. The Teach-Back provides an opportunity to both assess understanding and …
Psychometric Evaluation Of The Nursing Child Assessment Teaching (Ncat) Scale In Two Samples Of Mothers And Children, Samantha H. Ransone
Psychometric Evaluation Of The Nursing Child Assessment Teaching (Ncat) Scale In Two Samples Of Mothers And Children, Samantha H. Ransone
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
The mother-child relationship (MCR) has received an increasing amount of attention over the last several decades regarding its effect on long-term child development. Because the quality and quantity of interactions in the MCR have been established as important predictors of the child’s development, early identification of areas in the relationship requiring support and intervention is essential for promoting positive child outcomes. Observational assessment of the mother and child is considered best practice in evaluating maternal-child interaction (MCI). The Nursing Child Assessment Teaching (NCAT) scale is an instrument that has been used to quantify the quality of interaction in the MCR …
African American Men And Ostrich Behavior, Debbie Slack-Gay
African American Men And Ostrich Behavior, Debbie Slack-Gay
Doctoral Projects
This project explores why African American men choose Ostrich Behavior when it comes to health care prevention and maintenance as related to hypertension. The population was African American men, ages18–80, in Northern California. Men were recruited while getting a haircut or waiting for one or after church services. Blood pressure readings were taken and a health questionnaire was administered. The results show that even if hypertension is known, men ages 18–45 go to fewer office visits than African American men in other age groups, and older men tend to seek medical care and take medication if prescribed.

Are Education And Work Process Redesign Effective In Increasing Documentation Of Annual Retinal Exams Among Diabetic Patients?, Stacy Screws
Are Education And Work Process Redesign Effective In Increasing Documentation Of Annual Retinal Exams Among Diabetic Patients?, Stacy Screws
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Annual retinal eye exams are one of the key strategies in controlling vision loss due to diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) states that in order to “provide high-quality diabetes care, practitioners need information systems that help them track patient progress toward goals, as well as tools to help them meet those goals.” The electronic medical record (EMR) is a mainstay of healthcare today but the basic utilization of a EMR does not necessarily change the quality of care that patients receive. The purpose of this project was to determine if education and work process redesign are effective in increasing …
Study Of Nurses' Attitudes And Practices Towards Pain Evaluation In Nonverbal Patients, Rebekah Lovin
Study Of Nurses' Attitudes And Practices Towards Pain Evaluation In Nonverbal Patients, Rebekah Lovin
Senior Honors Theses
Pain, and the appropriate treatment of it, has recently come to the forefront of issues addressed with healthcare providers. Since the cornerstone of pain management is an appropriate assessment, methods of accurate pain evaluation are necessary. This need is particularly important in the population of patients who cannot express their pain. While pain assessment tools are available for use with nonverbal patients and hospitals typically mandate the use of one of these tools, actual compliance with such policy may not actually occur. Various barriers, such as education in the use of a tool, time, and the personal views of the …
Deaf Access To Healthcare, Jennifer L. Yates
Deaf Access To Healthcare, Jennifer L. Yates
Senior Honors Theses
Modern medical professionals strive to provide culturally competent care; however, Deaf[1] culture remains overlooked. Common language and experience draw deaf individuals together as a cultural group. Ignorance about Deaf culture perpetuates barriers to holistic care in the medical setting. Deaf patients receive misdiagnoses, delayed treatment, and privacy breaches. Deaf culture understandably avoids healthcare and is characterized by numerous health disparities as a result. Obstacles hindering Deaf access to healthcare are directly opposed to the intended therapeutic relationship and holistic care. Increased awareness of Deaf culture is required to improve the Deaf’s access to healthcare.
[1] The word deaf should …

Improving Lgbt Cultural Competence In Senior Nursing Students, Hallie Orgel
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) health care is considered a national priority by The Institute of Medicine (IOM, 2011) and HealthyPeople 2020 (2013). The shortage of LGBT culturally competent health care providers is a top contributor to the oppression and discrimination affecting LGBT health (2013). The purpose of the evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to improve the cultural competence of nursing students by improving their knowledge, attitudes, and skills in working with the LBGT population. A multi-method intervention was provided to seniors in a baccalaureate program. The project took place at a private Midwestern university and utilized a pretest/post-test design. …

The Effects Of A Hpv Educational Intervention Aimed At Collegiate Males On Knowledge, Vaccine Intention, And Uptake, Mary A. Knudtson
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States (US). In 2013, approximately 6% of 19 to 26-year-old males had received at least one dose of the HPV vaccine (Richman, Maddy, Torres, & Goldberg, 2016). Currently there is no known cure for HPV, however a prophylactic vaccination provides an efficacious method for protection against HPV related diseases. The purpose of the evidence-based project was to provide a HPV educational intervention to collegiate males and examine the effects of HPV knowledge, intention to vaccinate, and receipt of vaccination. The Health Belief Model was selected to …
The Effects Of Continuous Insulin Pump Therapy On Glycemic Control In Pregnant Type 1 Diabetics, Kimberly Kelsey
The Effects Of Continuous Insulin Pump Therapy On Glycemic Control In Pregnant Type 1 Diabetics, Kimberly Kelsey
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus accounts for approximately 5% of the diabetic population (CDC, 2015). Numerous complications must be avoided when a diabetic is insulin dependent. Women who are diabetic who are planning to conceive a family have special considerations. Little research has been focused into how to best manage Type 1 diabetics during pregnancy. Since Type 1 diabetes is predominantly diagnosed between birth and 30 years of age, many Type 1 diabetics have potential to become pregnant without knowing how to best manage their diabetes. Poor glycemic control in diabetics has been related to miscarriages, stillbirths, malformations, and macrosomia (Lapolla, …
The Efficacy Of Narcotic Contracts In Preventing Drug-Seeking Behaviors In Adolescents Experiencing Chronic Pain Related To Sickle Cell Anemia, Haley Russotti
The Efficacy Of Narcotic Contracts In Preventing Drug-Seeking Behaviors In Adolescents Experiencing Chronic Pain Related To Sickle Cell Anemia, Haley Russotti
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
It is a primary job of a nurse to advocate for their patients. If a patient is in pain, it is the nurse who is responsible for making sure that their pain gets treated. Adolescents with sickle cell anemia experience chronic pain related to vaso-occlusive crises. Once the symptoms start, they will, “persist throughout life, and there is no cure” (Atoui, 2015, p. 425). Due to their long-term use of narcotics, these adolescents could begin to demonstrate drug-seeking behaviors. Narcotic contracts are an intervention that health care teams have created to prevent drug-seeking behaviors in patients using narcotics to treat …

Hypertension is a major problem in the United States. It is critical to identify effective strategies to treat and manage hypertension. An experimental design was utilized to determine the effectiveness of home-based blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) in the management of prehypertension, newly diagnosed, or uncontrolled hypertension. A randomized convenience sample of 20 adults was recruited into a control (n=9) and experimental (n=11) group. The translational care project was conducted over 60 days where participants measured their blood pressures as instructed for the intervention and control groups. An independent t-test was conducted to analyze the effectiveness of HBPM on the participants’ …
Post-Intensive Care Syndrome: Comparison Of Educational Interventions To Educate Parents Of Children Hospitalized In The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit At St. Louis Children’S Hospital, Stephanie A. Esses
Dissertations
Background: Family members of children hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) can develop cognitive, psychological, and physical manifestations of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). Targeted education to help parents/caregivers recognize the signs and symptoms of PICS may result in better awareness of the syndrome and greater willingness to seek and receive support during their child’s PICU admission.
Objective: to evaluate three targeted PICS educational interventions to increase PICS awareness among parents/caregivers in the St. Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH) PICU.
Results: A total of 62 parents/caregivers received one of three educational interventions: informational brochures (n=22), scripted informational conversation (n=20), or …

Improving New Graduate Critical Care Nurse Practitioner Knowledge And Retention Using A Dedicated Orientation And Mentoring Program, Katherine Huffer
Dissertations
Abstract
Background: There has been a significant amount of research into the many challenges that nurse practitioners (NPs) face as they transition from school to practice, however, there is limited research on how to improve this transition. Regardless of the setting in which the NPs are working, novices NPs alike report feelings of being unprepared and experiencing high levels of stress, anxiety, fear, and frustration. New research suggests that a comprehensive NP orientation and residency programs may provide a way to integrate the new NPs into their practice environment successfully.

Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton
Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton
Nursing ETDs
Compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction are two inter-related concepts. Individuals in helping professions may occasionally face compassion fatigue from giving so much of themselves to others. Compassion fatigue has been studied in a variety of settings: medical, social work, nursing, law enforcement, and fire departments, to name a few. While some researchers have studied nurses, little published work has focused exclusively on nurses who care for specialty pediatric populations. Additionally, there is scant research on whether compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue are associated with patient satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of compassion satisfaction and …

Merging Human Becoming Theory And Health Coaching Principles Into The Role Of The Family Nurse Practitioner, Tammy Lee Olney
Theses and Graduate Projects
Family Nurse Practitioners have limited time with patients to address their health care concerns. Practitioners need to make the most of this limited time in order to promote positive patient outcomes. Health coaching is a proven method to assist others in identifying obstacles, prioritize what is important to them, leverage strengths, and in making healthy behavior changes. Drawing on evidenced-based practice in health coaching assists the Family Nurse Practitioner with making deeper connections with patients and guides in co-creating a plan that is truly patient-centered. The health coaching process is in parallel with the Human Becoming Theory by the use …
