Toward Expert Consensus On Guidelines For The Use Of Yoga In The Treatment Of Anxiety In Children And Adolescents., Laura J. Abels
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Despite clinical evidence to support the use of yoga as a treatment option for children and adolescents with anxiety, clinical practice guidelines do not exist. Purpose: This project used the modified Delphi technique to determine if consensus exists on the need for clinical practice guidelines among experts in the fields of child and adolescent psychiatry, psychology, and yoga. Additionally, this project aimed to determine if consensus exists on what should be included in clinical practice guidelines for the use of yoga as a therapeutic intervention for anxiety in children and adolescents. Methods: Three rounds of questionnaires were used …
Prevention Of Oral Mucositis In Cancer Patients, Patricia E. Biel
Prevention Of Oral Mucositis In Cancer Patients, Patricia E. Biel
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Oral mucositis [OM] is one of the most severe non-hematological problems related to cancer treatments and can impact quality of life. It is linked to poorer outcomes due to the associated weight loss, pain, dehydration, and risk of developing life-threatening infections. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to determine if OM is preventable with the use of an oral care protocol and zinc supplementation when compared to use of oral care protocols alone. The Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Model was used to guide project implementation in an outpatient oncology office. Recommendations were developed from an exhaustive review …

A Practical Understanding Of Preeclampsia For A Nurse In A Third World Setting, Anna Lovin
A Practical Understanding Of Preeclampsia For A Nurse In A Third World Setting, Anna Lovin
Senior Honors Theses
Preeclampsia is a disease of pregnancy that affects approximately 3-5% of women with child. It is one of the primary causes of mortality in mothers and babies across the globe. The exact cause, pathogenesis, or disease progression is unknown. Therefore, there is no definition of which patients are at risk for developing preeclampsia and what can work as a preventative measure. In high socioeconomic settings where there is good healthcare, standard treatment is established to manage the symptoms and decrease the progression of preeclampsia to eclampsia. However, in more rural, third-world settings of developing countries, caring for patients with preeclampsia …

Nursing Students' Knowledge Of Alcohol - Interactive Medications, Andrew Coop
Honors Projects
In 2018, nearly 57% of American adults reported drinking alcohol in the past month, and 41.5% of current drinkers reported taking alcohol-interactive (AI) medications. Consuming alcohol and medications concurrently may result in adverse effects. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a one-hour lecture about AI medications in a class of undergraduate nursing students (N = 48) at a small Midwestern university. The Jarvis Nursing Knowledge of Alcohol-Interactive Medications survey was distributed on August 27, 2018, and again on November 19, 2018. A significant increase was found between pretest and posttest on correct identification of …

Sustainability In Quality Improvement And Patient Safety Initiatives, Angelo P. Giardino, Eileen R. Giardino
Sustainability In Quality Improvement And Patient Safety Initiatives, Angelo P. Giardino, Eileen R. Giardino
Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety
The question often asked of a quality improvement initiative is whether the improvement process has been sustained within the organization. Rarely is the question answered satisfactorily. The sustainability of an improvement process is important as it justifies the investment of human and financial capital. The term 'evaporation of improvements' addresses the dilemma that between 33% to 70% of all innovations are reportedly not sustained (Fleiszer, Semenic, Ritchie, Richer, & Denis, 2015) . This evaporation of improvement captures the frustrating inability of many institutions to maintain the achieved improvement after the newness of the initial effort wears off (Buchanan, Fitzgerald, & …
Gastrostomy Tube Complications And Management, Deborah J. Garcia
Gastrostomy Tube Complications And Management, Deborah J. Garcia
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
The avoidable complications of clogging and dislodgement of gastrostomy tubes (g-tubes) place a tremendous burden on patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, and the entire medical system. These complications are associated with $130 million in healthcare utilization each year. Insufficient education of patients and personal caregivers regarding the prevention of complications of clogging and dislodgement of g-tubes is identified as a major barrier. Preintervention and postintervention education program models were established, which include a preprocedure clinic visit with education as well as scheduled follow-up phone calls. A chart review and follow-up phone call was used to evaluate the effect of providing consistent …

Perspectives Of Behavioral Health Providers In School Based Health Clinics (Sbhc) About Behavioral Health Services And Low-Income Adolescent Males’ Academic Achievement, Suzanne Gagnon
Nursing ETDs
ABSTRACT
Low-income adolescent males are subject to both health and educational inequities. Male adolescents are the least likely of all pediatric age and gender groups to access either primary care or behavioral health services. This same population is most likely to not complete high school or college. Health and educational outcomes are both affected by social determinants. School-based Health Centers (SBHCs) are known for providing access to primary care and behavioral health services for low-income and vulnerable populations. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to identify themes from one-on-one semi-structured qualitative interviews with behavioral health providers, who provide …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Problem Description: Adults in the United States do not exercise sufficiently to meet the specifications outlined in the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2018). The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion’s (2018) Healthy People 2020 aims to eliminate health disparities and achieve health equity among all population groups in the United States. However, statistics from the U.S. Office of Minority Health (2014) indicate that Hispanics are twice as likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes as non-Hispanic whites. According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report in 2015, …

Theory Of Planned Behavior: Examining Breastfeeding Intentions And Behaviors, Rebecca Chema
18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)
Breastfeeding is the gold standard for infant nutrition, providing benefits to both infants and mothers. According to the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), a mother’s breastfeeding intention is directly related to the following antecedents: attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. The purpose of this descriptive, prospective study was to examine the relationship between antecedents and breastfeeding intentions and behavior at 60 days postpartum utilizing three online questionnaires administered prior to birth and at 10 and 60 days postpartum. The baseline questionnaire measured participants’ attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control toward breastfeeding intentions, while day 10 and day 60 …

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
The purpose of the quasi-experimental study was to examine the effect of a community educational offering on attendees’ knowledge of osteoporosis as measured by the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test. A statistical significant difference was noted between the pretest and post-test means (p = .000). The findings demonstrate that a brief educational session can increase knowledge regarding osteoporosis. Development of partnerships with community populations to provide opportunities for health education can be valuable in promoting healthy behaviors.

The field of pediatric nursing is one that has captured my heart since I was 16. When I thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up, the only aspiration in my clearly uncertain plan was that I wanted to work with children. Soon after, I came to see the huge gratification that being a peds nurse could bring me. Through the work I have completed in my honors independent study, I have had the opportunity to focus on and learn more about this exceptional and rewarding field.
I began with comprising an educational blog focused on the …

Bringing Truth To The Table: An Evidence Review To Dispell Common Dietary Myths, Madison Pierce
Bringing Truth To The Table: An Evidence Review To Dispell Common Dietary Myths, Madison Pierce
Senior Theses
Background/Significance
Nurses are most directly involved with patient care and are in an excellent position to be patient educators. Patients are more likely to actively listen after establishing rapport, especially for loaded topics such as lifestyle choices. While nurses have general nutrition knowledge, they may lack current, scientifically-based information to help patients implement a healthy diet. Nurses can both educate and be an example of health habits that patients should emulate, and therefore need to be adequately informed about topics like dietary misconceptions.
Purpose
The purpose of this project is to provide current evidence-based information regarding dietary misconceptions to nurses …

This Doctor of Nursing Practice project conducted a survey to evaluate the social determinants of health among this population and how they influence the participant’s ability to follow-up. This is the first phase of a three-phase project involving assessment and evaluation. The second and third phases of this project will center on intervention and re-evaluation after intervention. The survey was administered to eligible participants who presented to the emergency department at San Francisco General Hospital. Fifty participants were surveyed …
Pressure Ulcers, Kelly Jeter, Courtney Frazier, Jimmy Mcdonell
Pressure Ulcers, Kelly Jeter, Courtney Frazier, Jimmy Mcdonell
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
During this research project, we are investigating if repositioning an immobile patient every two hours would reduce the risk of pressure ulcers forming. Pressure ulcers are caused by increased pressure or friction on bony prominences and are most likely found on immobile patients. Pressure ulcers are a major infection risk for the patient and a huge cost factor for the hospital. When the patient is immobile it becomes the nurses job to identify the risk of pressure ulcers and help prevent them from occurring. With constant repositioning every two hours, these factors could be reduced or stopped all together.
A Multi-Faceted Intervention To Improve Diagnosis And Treatment Rates Of Overweight And Obesity By Nurse Practitioners In Primary Care, Susan Disser
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
The United States is amid an obesity epidemic (Institute of Medicine, 2012). Indiana ranks as the tenth most overweight state. (America’s Health Rankings, 2018). Despite guidelines outlining the treatment of obesity, primary care providers seldom use these guidelines (Hayes et al., 2017). In a 2010 study, only 28.9% of obese patients received a diagnosis of obesity and less than 25% of these patients received counseling on diet, exercise, or weight loss (Bleich, Pickett-Blackely, & Cooper, 2011). The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project is to determine if a multi-faceted intervention consisting of academic detailing, reminders, audit with feedback, and …
