Factors Related To 30-Day Readmission Among Hispanics With Type 2 Diabetes, Athena Mohebbi
Dissertations
Background: Medicare spends $17 billion yearly on 30-day readmissions. Hispanic adults have a higher prevalence of diabetes (12.6%) compared to non-Hispanic whites (9.4%). Those with a diagnosis of diabetes have the 17% higher rate (14-23%) for 30-day readmission. Little research has been conducted on Hispanics with diabetes relative to 30-day readmissions. Aims: Among Hispanics with type 2 diabetes: 1) measure the incidence of 30-day readmission by sociodemographic, behavioral and clinical factors;2) identify independent factors associated with 30-day readmission among Hispanic adults with type 2 diabetes accounting for potential covariates; 3) compare the ability of the Hispanic Diabetic Study Model plus …

Back To The Basics With Environmental Hygiene, Shanna D. Stowe
Back To The Basics With Environmental Hygiene, Shanna D. Stowe
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Environmental hygiene is fundamental in preventing the transmission of pathogens that can cause health care-associated infections (HAIs). Inanimate surfaces within the patient’s environment are defined as high-touch surfaces and include areas such as bedrails, tray tables, call lights, telephones, any equipment that is attached to the patient, and the computer on wheels. HAIs develop during hospitalization and occur within 48 to 72 hours of admission or within 10 days after hospital discharge (CDC, 2014; Collins, 2008). HAIs increase the morbidity, mortality, and hospital expenditures; and critically ill patients are at greater risk for HAIs because of their compromised immune systems, …

Reflux, Apnea And The Impact On Discharge, Michele Savin, Dnp, Nnp-Bc, Kaitlin Kenaley, Md, Maureen Moffet, Msn, Rula Nassar, Md
College of Nursing Posters
Decisions made about timing of discharge can be subjective. Definitions of significant bradycardia are multiple, and interventions are variable.
This necessitates an informed discussion with parents about the natural course of apnea, bradycardia and reflux.
The physiology of gastroesophageal reflux and respiratory control have intermingled confounding variables.
Critical thinking is required to educate and support families, however a paucity of research exists. Risks and benefits of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions should be evaluated.
Nurses need increased confidence in understanding how to approach the preterm infant with apnea and/or reflux as well as how to interact with families to support discharge …

Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who begin their careers in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) may be challenged in this practice environment. Inadequate prior experience as a staff nurse, limited opportunities for clinical placements in the PICU during graduate education, and being in a fast-paced, high-acuity practice environment without prior exposure to critically ill children are practice challenges in the PICU setting. The goal of postgraduate education training programs (fellowship programs) for the acute care pediatric nurse practitioner (ACPNP) is to prepare students to become beginner practitioners who can function effectively in the acute care setting within a few …

Centeringpregnancy: Perceptions Of Providers And Staff In A Private Ob Practice, Allison F. Mills
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Traditional prenatal care has been the stalwart of care in the United States since the 1920s; however, a new model of care is emerging: group-style prenatal care. This model of care has been well-documented within literature as having notable maternal and fetal outcomes, including increased patient satisfaction, decreased preterm birth rates, increased breastfeeding rates, and increased patient compliance, to name only a few. With such remarkable outcomes, it begs the question of why the group prenatal care model is not more widely utilized. This project aimed to determine if increasing the knowledge of healthcare providers in a private obstetrics practice …

Thorough and appropriate nutritional screening upon admission to the hospital can mitigate the negative consequences often associated with secondary malnutrition. At a suburban hospital in the southeastern United States, there was an 250% increase in consults to dieticians upon initiating use of the Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST) as the primary form of nutrition screening, which has been previously shown to have a high false positive rate. As a result, the workload of the dieticians increased. This time spent on analysis of false positive screenings takes away from time that could be spent on truly malnourished or at-risk patients. This quality …
