Food Resources for the Allen Family Center

Allen Family Center (AFC), a part of the nonprofit organization Mary’s Place, is a family driven resource hub that focuses on the needs and goals of families experiencing or on the verge of homelessness (Mercy Housing, 2022). They use a multigenerational approach to break the cycle of homelessness which promotes inclusivity, safety and provides opportunities to improve health (Mercy Housing, 2022).

When meeting with the team, we identified a concern as the limited food supplies available to AFC and the lack of food outreach they can provide. Providing resources to the community is …

Pick Your Plate: A Nutrition Education Study, Emmalyn Tucker

Honors College Theses

Childhood obesity has become a cause for concern among many nutrition experts. Childhood obesity can contribute to several health problems such as type 2 diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure. The large percentage of children affected with childhood obesity suggests a lack of essential nutrition education in our country. Junk food consumption and inadequate intake of the USDA’s MyPlate food groups have become essential areas for intervention. Multiple school-based nutrition education interventions have been explored to improve both children’s nutrition knowledge and improve healthy eating behaviors. “Pick Your Plate” is a nutrition education study designed to improve nutrition knowledge regarding junk …

Children’S Experiences Of Hospitalization Over Time: An Evaluation Of Using Poetry And Creative Writing By Children To Assess Their Experiences Of Hospitalization, David Wood

Patient Experience Journal

This article explores children’s experiences of hospital admissions through their poetry and creative writing and assesses the validity of this medium compared to other methods of evaluation. Pediatric patient experiences of hospital and their effects on children have been studied in various ways and there have been stepwise changes throughout the past century, matching the overall changes of medical care from paternalistic to patient centered. 17 poems were analyzed from children aged 6-13 years old (median 10) for recurrent themes whilst admitted to a large tertiary hospital in the north of England. Children frequently wrote about attacks on their senses, …

Toolkit For Screening Older Adults Desiring To Age In Place In Independent Living, Sister Raymond Marie Labonte

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The world is experiencing an increase in the aged population. This increase stimulated the popular theme of aging in place. Much time, effort and research have been channeled into exploring this model as an alternative to assisted living or skilled nursing settings for senior citizens worldwide. Elders desire to age in place. Current, recent, and decades old literature identifies this preferential option of the elderly and supports the need to develop plans and tools to assist elders to be able to successfully age in place. This quality assurance project is the venture to create both a congregate living community and …

Implementation Of Nurse Navigators For Behavioral Health, Theresa Papagna Oct 2022

Implementation Of Nurse Navigators For Behavioral Health, Theresa Papagna

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Mental health patients have been notoriously non-adherent with diligent medication conformity, office visit fidelity, candor about side effects, use of illegal substances for self-medication, and truthfulness about co-occurring conditions. This non-adherence makes treatment difficult for psychiatric providers, and all those who participate in the care of patients with mental illness. Patient non-adherence can cause frustration and can lead to provider burnout, which affects patients as well as providers. Also, there are concerning financial implications of excessive time and resources needed to adequately monitor mental health patients. Implications regarding 30- day re-admissions are tantamount to consideration of financial strains put on …

Implementation Of A Bowel Management Care Bundle On The Spinal Cord Injury Patient Population During Acute Recovery, Jessica Rene Baldwin Oct 2022

Implementation Of A Bowel Management Care Bundle On The Spinal Cord Injury Patient Population During Acute Recovery, Jessica Rene Baldwin

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Over 17,000 Americans suffer from spinal cord injuries (SCI) annually. Although the loss of motor function is a blatantly obvious sequela, the loss of autonomic nervous system control, and its direct effects on various body systems, is scarcely understood. The most frequently reported impairment associated with SCI-related bowel dysmotility is Neurogenic Bowel Dysfunction (NBD), affecting approximately 20-60% of the SCI population. NBD is defined as slow colonic time and is hallmarked by constipation and often impaction, leading to life-threatening complications, such as bowel obstruction, fecal impaction, autonomic dysreflexia, and even death. Identifying dysmotility within the SCI patient population and early …

Organizational Readiness For Implementing A Postpartum Depression Screening Protocol In The Nicu, Deanna L. Suber Oct 2022

Organizational Readiness For Implementing A Postpartum Depression Screening Protocol In The Nicu, Deanna L. Suber

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Problem Statement: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major depressive disorder that is the most common complication following childbirth, occurring in about 16% of new mothers (Berns et al., 2021). Mothers with infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are 40% more likely to develop PPD but are not typically screened for this complication (Berns et al., 2021; Cherry et al., 2016; Garfield et al., 2021). Implementing a PPD screening protocol in the NICU could help increase the detection of PPD in this population but would first require an evaluation of organizational readiness to ensure sustainability. Purpose: The purpose of …

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to implement the use of a silicone foam dressing under respiratory devices, monitored using kamishibai cards (k-cards) to decrease pressure injuries. K-cards are a rounding tool that staff can use to identify barriers that prevent the standard of care.

Intervention: A pre-study, three-month period, was compared to the implementation period in the …

Screening For Prediabetes In The Inpatient Setting, Mikayla Jordan Moore Oct 2022

Screening For Prediabetes In The Inpatient Setting, Mikayla Jordan Moore

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Problem Statement: Many patients that utilize the hospital system do not see a primary care provider and, therefore, miss important screenings. The hospital system can provide convenient screenings, or screenings conducted whenever a patient encounters the health system regardless of their chief complaint (Obinwa et al., 2020).

Purpose: Determine whether convenient prediabetes screenings administered to admitted patients on an Intermediate Critical Care Unit (ICCU) detect prediabetes at a higher rate than no formal screenings.

Methods: Participants will be sampled from those admitted to an intermediate critical care unit at a large acute-care facility.

Inclusion Criteria: Any adult patient (>18 …

Telemedicine Perception: An Identification And Evaluation Of Factors Contributing To The Use Of Telemedicine Services, Katherine Lewing

Doctoral Projects

A morbidity and mortality report made by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on the impact of telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic throughout 2020 noted several instances in which telemedicine tools had contributed to improved patient outcomes, including: increasing the availability of care to patients otherwise left with little access to health care, decreasing unnecessary patient visits, and reduced disease exposure to patients and staff directly at risk (CDC, 2020).

As the utilization of telemedicine becomes more important and prevalent in U.S. health care systems, it is important to recognize factors that inhibit patient usage. Factors such as inadequate …

Improving Hypertension Self Management In African American Men, Elizabeth C. Felix Oct 2022

Improving Hypertension Self Management In African American Men, Elizabeth C. Felix

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hypertension is a cardiopulmonary condition linked to genetic, environmental, and social factors. Left untreated, it can lead to fatal conditions such as heart disease. In the United States, African Americans experience disproportionately high rates of hypertension, earlier onset of symptoms, greater severity, and higher related mortality rates. African Americans also statistically have more difficulty self-managing their hypertension than other demographics. The aim of this project was (a) to identify, define, and measure perceived barriers to self-management of hypertension among African American men and (b) to target these barriers and increase patient engagement through personalized intervention plans. The researcher recruited 24 …

Assessing Primary Care Rns Impact On Quality Patient Care, Elizabeth Carreira

Nursing Research and EBP Day 2022

The purpose of this work was to examine how a large multi-site primary care based organization established an organizational structure that supported the determination, definition, measurement, and reporting of nursing sensitive indicators (NSIs) specific to ambulatory care nursing. NSIs capture the value of care provided by nurses and are a critical component of ANCC Magnet designation. The organization considered that successful pursuit of Magnet designation in an all ambulatory organization would involve establishing a framework to report NSIs that included defining nursing units and NSIs meaningful to the organization.

A multidisciplinary team led by nursing was established to examine and …
