Type 2 Diabetes Nutrition: A Video-Based Education Approach, Erin Russell
Masters Projects
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease associated with life- threatening outcomes. To prevent such outcomes, people with diabetes must possess the knowledge and skills required to manage their chronic disease. Objectives: To evaluate the impact of video-based education (VBE) on participant Diabetes Self-Management Education Skills (DSMES). Methods: The experimental study was conducted in a primary care office in a Midwest state. A convenience sample of 55 participants was selected. Pre- and post-implementation surveys were administered to measure change in self-efficacy between DMSES scores after viewing the VBE intervention. The Wilcoxon Rank Sum test was performed using …
Does Competency-Based Educational Elearning Improve Medical Assistant Knowledge And Performance In Blood Pressure Measurement And Recognition Of Elevated Bp Readings?, Janice Burkybile
Anna Vaughn School of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Inaccurate blood pressure measurement techniques can severely impact patient health, from missed diagnoses to medical mismanagement with the potential development of cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease. Researchers have reported for decades that all skill levels of healthcare providers perform inaccurate blood pressure measurement techniques. This problem can be attributed to one-time instruction with no refresher follow-up and no standardization of technique. Competency-based education facilitates healthcare providers to achieve competency in knowledge and performance of learned new skills and refresher training. Ultimately, competency-based education develops lifelong learners resulting in improved patient outcomes. The educational intervention was a thirty-minute eLearning codeveloped …

Do-Not-Hospitalize Orders In Assisted Living Facilities: Perspectives From Direct Care Workers, Alanna Kates Dancis Dr.
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Context: Do-not-hospitalize (DNH) orders in assisted living facilities (ALFs) are often misunderstood, ignored, or countermanded by direct care workers (DCWs), potentially leading to residents being sent to the hospital against their wishes.
Objectives: The primary purpose of this study was to gather sufficient qualitative data to create an intervention that would help prevent DCWs from sending residents with DNH orders to the hospital against their wishes. To accomplish this goal, the study centered on three research objectives: 1) to understand more fully how DCWs interpret DNH orders; 2) to determine if carrying out DNH orders causes moral distress for DCWs; …
Effects Of Guided Journaling On Nursing Clinical Judgment During An Externship, Jaclyn Parrill
Effects Of Guided Journaling On Nursing Clinical Judgment During An Externship, Jaclyn Parrill
Undergraduate Theses
Background: There is longstanding discussion concerning the competency of novice nurses who passed the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) and their ability to practice safely. Nursing clinical judgment (CJ), also known as critical thinking or clinical decision-making, accounts for more than 46% of daily tasks nurses perform in their first year (Hensel, 2020, p. 128). Guided reflective journaling is one active learning strategy that encourages students to reflect on what they have learned, anticipate future needs, and enhance clinical judgment skills (Meijer, 2021, p. 9, 11). This qualitative pilot study follows one nursing student throughout a student nurse extern program …
Virtual Visits In Routine Prenatal Care, Katrina K. Wu
Virtual Visits In Routine Prenatal Care, Katrina K. Wu

The Motherhood Crusade: Rural Low-Income Mothers, Support, And Empowerment, Christina Castellano
The Motherhood Crusade: Rural Low-Income Mothers, Support, And Empowerment, Christina Castellano
Dissertations
Previous research has shown that postpartum women with untreated mental health conditions are more likely to fail to manage their own health, have inadequate nutrition, abuse substances, experience abuse, be less responsive to their baby’s needs, have fewer positive interactions with their baby, experience difficulties breastfeeding, and question their abilities as a mother. Rural culture plays a complex role in the transition to motherhood, influencing whether mothers seek out and use resources. While more is known about location and access issues, less is known about how rural culture and, more specifically, how empowerment and social support impact postpartum experience. The …
The Rising Rates Of Pediatric Health Conditions Due To Lack Of Nutrition Education, Amanda Healy
The Rising Rates Of Pediatric Health Conditions Due To Lack Of Nutrition Education, Amanda Healy
Nursing | Student Research Posters
Statistics show that there is an increase in childhood health conditions related to nutrition. Throughout the United States, the rates of childhood obesity have drastically increased along with the rates of type two diabetes. There is correlation between these two chronic problems in pediatric patients, but not all pediatrics diagnosed with DM2 are obese. Furthermore, there is a correlation between this increase of obesity/DM2 and the lack of nutrition education in schools. The public school system in the United States does not have the funding to provide adequate nutrition education to the children which is leading to substantial health consequences. …

The Effect Of Delivery Method On Breastfeeding Initiation And Duration, Mariana Carina Benitez
Nursing | Student Research Posters
There is a plethora of research focusing on the physical effects of each delivery method on a mother’s ability to initiate and sustain breastfeeding, however, there may be more psychosocial factors that influence a mothers decision to start and continue breastfeeding once they deliver. It is very common to be educated about breastfeeding after the baby has already been delivered, but it is often missed that education before may improve breastfeeding rates and increase mothers' breastfeeding self-efficacy rates. The primary purpose of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of breastfeeding support groups that provide information, guidance, and social support …

Palliative Care In The Neonatal Population, Raegan Miller
Palliative Care In The Neonatal Population, Raegan Miller
MSN Capstone Projects
In more than 90% of cases of neonate deaths, terminal comfort care was provided in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) (Soni et al., 2011). Palliative care teams are increasing, but not enough organizations have embraced the need for better palliative care guidelines. Nor do many organizations know when, how, or if palliative care should even be introduced. These events lead to comfort care measures being underutilized in the NICU for most newborn infants with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. Neonatal palliative care is discussed more than in years past, but little research has been dedicated to how early palliative care …

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) significantly impacts the lives of Americans and the healthcare industry. Clinicians and patients utilize significant time, effort, and resources to combat the challenges faced. Homeless patients have additional burdens not experienced by those of housed individuals. A Midwest homeless shelter recognized the ongoing unmet needs for primary care and behavioral health services for their clinic patients. It was postulated that implementing a streamlined referral process to primary care services, enabling patients to be seen same day or next day, would increase utilization of services by this population. To increase the probability of patients presenting for their …

The Importance Of Educating Adolescent Mothers In The Postpartum Period, Sydney Price, Madelyn Travis, Reagan Schwable
The Importance Of Educating Adolescent Mothers In The Postpartum Period, Sydney Price, Madelyn Travis, Reagan Schwable
Scholars Week
Due to the lack of policy or procedure for individualized education for adolescent mothers, we concluded that a educational checklist in the charting system would be the most effective way to properly educate young mothers during this confusing stage in their life. Specific education helps to improve perceived quality of care, safety/wellbeing in the young mother and newborn, and reducing the risks of complications such as postpartum depression or issues with pregnancy later on. In summary, ensuring that teenage mothers are fully educated before discharge will provide for better mother and baby outcomes.
