Enhancing Diabetes Care With Peer Mentorship And Support Groups, Barry Mccann Bsn, Rn

Posters & Presentations

Poster presented at the Parkview Nursing Research Symposium, 2023.

Continued increase in prevalence of type 2 diabetes indicates need for more effective interventions to support lifestyle and behavior changes (ADA 2018).

• Evidence indicates attending diabetes self management education programs can improve diabetes outcomes, unfortunately they are often under referred and underutilized (Powers et al. 2015, Boakye et al. 2018).

• Limited class times, locations, and capacities can make attendance for all patients difficult and vulnerable populations are less likely to participate (Boakye et al. 2018).

• Diabetes education programs often lack culturally and individually relevant guidance, provide no long-term …

Nursing Leadership in Community Engagement Projects

Implementing Health Information Stations at the Addiction Recovery Center

Six Seattle Pacific University nursing students partnered with an addiction recovery center to address aging healthcare concerns. The recovery center is a non-profit organization that provides a refuge for healing for community members recovering from trauma, homelessness, addiction, and other mental health challenges. Through our weekly meetings with the community, we wanted to address specific barriers such as aging healthcare concerns. We focused on how the low-income aging population posed barriers to aging well.

Background

There has also been a rise in poverty in aging populations (Saldanha, 2023). Though aging influences …

The Effect Of Obesity On Comorbidities: A Benchmark Study, Kaley Nolen Nov 2023

The Effect Of Obesity On Comorbidities: A Benchmark Study, Kaley Nolen

MSN Capstone Projects

Obesity is distinguished by a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30. Tremmel et al. (2017) reports obese individuals are at a greater risk for developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. In 2014, approximately 641 million adults were classified as obese (Zhang et al., 2018). This epidemic has drastically worsened over the last two decades resulting in obesity ranking as the fifth most common cause of death globally (Safaei et al., 2021). Okunogbe et al. (2021) states, slowing the incidence rate of obesity by 5% will save approximately $3.3 billion annually between 2020-2060. The pathophysiology and cause of obesity is …

Re-Evaluating Mobilization Practices And Their Impact On Hapis, Erin Christopher, Mary Prochaska, Luna Pierre, Lindsay Santucci, Kenny Van Ryn, Francheska Santiago Nov 2023

Re-Evaluating Mobilization Practices And Their Impact On Hapis, Erin Christopher, Mary Prochaska, Luna Pierre, Lindsay Santucci, Kenny Van Ryn, Francheska Santiago

Nursing Research and EBP Day 2023

Hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) contribute to longer length of stay, poor clinical outcomes and increased healthcare costs.

A literature review showed that the implementation of visual cues to identify patients who require assistance with mobility and positioning in addition to the implementation of scheduled turn teams could have a positive health impact for the patients at RGH and reduce HAPIs incidence. Research suggests that educating unlicensed staff to recognize patient Braden Scale scores and to provide daily care based on risk factors for skin breakdown may lead to improved clinical outcomes.

Assa'ad, Sami L. Bahna, Antonio Bognanni, Rose Kamenwa

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Cow’s milk allergy is rare in exclusively breastfed infants. To support the continuation of breastfeeding an infant after diagnosis with a cow’s milk allergy, it is critical to examine the evidence for and against any form of cow’s milk elimination diet for lactating mothers. In this narrative review, we highlight the lack of high-quality evidence, hence subsequent controversy, regarding whether the minuscule quantities of cow’s milk proteins detectable in human milk cause infant cow’s milk allergy symptoms. Current clinical practice recommendations advise a 2–4 week trial of maternal cow’s milk dietary elimination for: a) IgE-mediated cow’s milk allergy only if …

Using Natural Language Processing To Evaluate Electronic Health Records Of Patients With Ovarian Cancer For Documentation Of Goals Of Care, Hillarie Elizabeth Joehl

Dissertations

Growing evidence supports the benefits of serious illness communication including goals of care (GOC) discussions and documentation in the electronic health record (EHR). Patients who discuss end-of-life (EOL) care with their clinicians are more likely to have positive outcomes including better-reported quality of life, less distress, and a higher likelihood of receiving care consistent with their preferences. Limited research suggests only a small fraction of ovarian cancer patients have such discussions with their clinicians. Using a novel natural language processing (NLP) methodology, this retrospective and descriptive study explores EHRs for patients with ovarian cancer to characterize documentation of GOC. Using …
