Examination Of Reflections From Nurse Anesthesia Trainee Volunteers In Honduras, Thomas M. Boyce Aug 2019

Examination Of Reflections From Nurse Anesthesia Trainee Volunteers In Honduras, Thomas M. Boyce

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

There is a lack of surgical and anesthesia services in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) which creates an increased burden of disease from otherwise surgically treatable conditions. Nurse anesthesia trainees (NATs) can serve to fill this lack of anesthesia services while also gaining real life experience that can enhance their training. Identifying common experiences and barriers among NATs that have volunteered on a surgical brigade is important to understand the benefits experienced by NATs and to increase volunteer surgical brigade programs among nurse anesthesia programs. A retrospective thematic analysis of 23 written reflections of NATs who participated in a one-week …

Ethical Considerations In Short Term Global Health Experiences, Sheri Compton-Mcbride

The project was designed to increase the knowledge of undergraduate nursing students scheduled to embark on a short term experience in global health. Module development and dissemination of evidence regarding the ethics of care and cultural …

Servant Leadership Towards Cultural Competency And Critical Thinking: A Mixed Methods Study In Zambia, Jill Marie Brown Jan 2019

Servant Leadership Towards Cultural Competency And Critical Thinking: A Mixed Methods Study In Zambia, Jill Marie Brown

Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

There is a paucity of occupational therapy literature related to the professional development process that occurs when students participate in immersive, international servant leadership experiences in developing countries. A scarcity of literature exists on how such culturally rich experiences can influence the development of the participating students’ dispositional critical thinking and cultural competency skill sets. This mixed methods study depicts how a 3-week servant leadership experience in Zambia, Africa, measured the acquisition of dispositional critical thinking and cultural competency skill sets in novice to experienced occupational therapy students. Moreover, this study infuses a constructivist grounded theory approach to uncover a …

Comparing The Effects Of Immersion Service Learning And Local Service Learning In Pre-Licensure Health Care Students’ Transcultural Self-Efficacy, Kimberly Johnson Mar 2018

Comparing The Effects Of Immersion Service Learning And Local Service Learning In Pre-Licensure Health Care Students’ Transcultural Self-Efficacy, Kimberly Johnson

DNP Projects

Local and immersion service learning methods prepare pre-licensure health care professionals to deliver culturally competent care to diverse populations- an important need because of the rapid racial and ethnic diversity growth in the U.S. A mixed-methods approach compared the effect of local and immersion service learning methods on multiple disciplines of pre-licensure health care students’ confidence in delivering care to diverse populations. Guided by Jeffreys (2016) CCC Model, the Transcultural Self Efficacy Tool (TSET) was used to compare pre-licensure health care students’ (n=34) transcultural self-efficacy perceptions following local or immersion service learning experiences. Secondary source, qualitative data obtained from …

Learning Cultural Humility Through Stories And Global Service-Learning, Stephanie Fisher, Eloise Hockett, Linda Samek

Faculty Publications - College of Nursing

Service-learning experiences are often utilized by nursing programs in efforts to increase the cultural competence of nursing students. Through the use of sharing story, the concepts of cultural competence and cultural humility can be explained for students preparing for upcoming intercultural experiences. This case study describes the experience of nursing students and university faculty on their first service-learning trip to rural Kenya and how the intercultural issues were navigated there as students developed characteristics of cultural humility. This story is now being shared in preparations for subsequent international trips with nursing students and can be a model for programs wanting …

Cultural Competency In Effective Medical Missions, Abigail Drogosz Nov 2017

Cultural Competency In Effective Medical Missions, Abigail Drogosz

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: Every year medical professionals and volunteers travel internationally to provide services to individuals in need. However, some times these trips can be more detrimental than helpful. This can be due to the fact that these trips are self-serving in which they provide value for visitors without meeting the local community needs (Unite for Site, 2015). Secondly, they raise unmet expectations due to language barriers or lack of medical training for particular diseases. In addition, they may provide culturally irrelevant or inadequate care to the communities they are serving. Lastly, these missions may not follow current standards of health …

(First paragraph) I enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1985. After reporting for basic training, I learned to execute military formation maneuvering commands. Military formations help organize ceremonial parades, gain tactical advantage, and create discipline. It occurs to me that the same elements that contribute to effective functioning of a military unit- ceremony, tactical planning, and discipline- also contribute to achieving one's goals after completing graduate school.

The Effect Of Continuing Professional Development From The Perspective Of Nurses And Midwives Who Participated In Continuing Education Programs Offered By Global Health Alliance Western Australia: A Mixed-Method Study, Yan Ing (Jenni) Ng Jan 2017

The Effect Of Continuing Professional Development From The Perspective Of Nurses And Midwives Who Participated In Continuing Education Programs Offered By Global Health Alliance Western Australia: A Mixed-Method Study, Yan Ing (Jenni) Ng

Theses

Continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities for nurses and midwives are central to improving knowledge, broadening skills and maintaining competencies to provide best practice and clinical care. This is gained through participating in continuing education (CE). CPD is readily accessible and a mandatory requirement for nurses and midwives in developed nations, such as Australia. However, in developing countries, such as Tanzania, while CPD is promoted, it has limited availability. As such, the Global Health Alliance Western Australia (GHAWA), an international health development program, seeks to provide further sustainable CPD opportunities for nurses and midwives in Tanzania.

The purpose of this research …

Appropriate Gestational Weight Gain, Eugelyn Opalec Santos May 2016

Appropriate Gestational Weight Gain, Eugelyn Opalec Santos

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Abstract

Over the past 30 years, excessive weight gain during pregnancy among American women has been a significant concern, resulting in serious health consequences to mothers and their newborns. During 2011, 48% of U.S. women gained more than the ideal amount of weight during pregnancy. Several international studies have also documented that excessive weight gain during pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. As a result, one in ten babies were born prematurely in the United States in 2014. Based on the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) guidelines (2009), the purpose of this project was to implement the Healthy …

Does Theory Translate In The Trenches Of Short Term Mission Work?, Rhonda D. Hensley Jan 2016

Does Theory Translate In The Trenches Of Short Term Mission Work?, Rhonda D. Hensley

Journal of Health Ethics

Despite numerous criticisms in the literature on the ethics and sustainable outcomes of short term international mission trips, there can be positive outcomes for volunteers and for recipients of short term mission care efforts. Utilizing a theoretical framework that addresses efforts to promote sustainability can lead to a structured, productive, and satisfying experience. With effective host country partnerships and an organized model of care delivery, international mission volunteers can provide highly effective health care services that are specific to the health and cultural needs of the host community.

Nurses who have engaged in volunteer activities anecdotally describe personally transforming experiences gained through their efforts and for many nurses volunteering becomes part of their professional mandate. Although many social disciplines have studied volunteering, to date there has been a paucity of research on nurses who volunteer. The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics of novice nurses who volunteer and determine the influence of volunteering and associated …
