Perceived And Actual Level Of Knowledge Of Diabetes Mellitus Among Nurses, Gayla M. Kupris

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to describe and compare staff nurses perceived and actual levels of knowledge of diabetes mellitus. A convenience sample of 60 staff nurses from a 248 bed suburban teaching hospital was surveyed. The Diabetes Self-Report Tool (Drass, Muir-Nash, Boykin, Turek, & Baker, 1989), was used to assess staff nurses' perceived level of diabetes knowledge. The Diabetes: Basic Knowledge Test (Drass, et al., 1989), was used to measure actual level of diabetes knowledge. Subjects were found to have an …

Analysis Of Cholesterol Screening Practices, Jane Mattina

MSN Research Projects

Cardiovascular disease, which consists of hypertension, coronary heart disease, and cerebrovascular accidents, affects over 82 million American adults and is currently the leading cause of death in the United States. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies high-blood cholesterol as one of the main risk factors in the development of these diseases. Furthermore, 71 million Americans report having a high-blood cholesterol level, yet only about one third of those people have it under control (CDC, 2014c). The National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) guidelines recommend that adults 20 years or older be screened …

Ethnographic field research techniques were used including nine months of observation and in-depth interviews with practicing nurse managers. After reviewing historical events that shaped the role of the nurse manager, the role was then placed within the economic, social and health care context of the 1970's and 80's. Methods Used To Self-Predict Ovulation A Comparative Study, Richard J. Fehring May 1990

Methods Used To Self-Predict Ovulation A Comparative Study, Richard J. Fehring

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Time of ovulation as detected by a self-test of luteinizing hormone (LH) in the urine was compared with time of ovulation as detected by self-observation of cervical mucus. Twenty regularly cycling women monitored their cervical mucus and urine LH for two complete menstrual cycles. Of the cycles that had an LH surge, 100% were on the peak day of cervical mucus or within three days before the peak day. Self-observation of cervical mucus, therefore, can be an accurate method of determining optimal fertility.

The Relationship Between Occupational Choice And Perceptions Of Professional Nursing Functions And Characteristics, Ellis Quinn Youngkin Apr 1990

The Relationship Between Occupational Choice And Perceptions Of Professional Nursing Functions And Characteristics, Ellis Quinn Youngkin

Effects Of Sodium Intake, Furosemide, And Infusion Of Atrial Natriuretic Peptide On The Urinary And Metabolic Clearances Of Arginine Vasopressin In Normal Subjects, Arnold M. Moses, Carol Jones, Carolyn B. Yucha Jan 1990

Yucha

Nursing Faculty Research

Arginine vasopressin (AVP) and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) have important influences on water and electrolyte metabolism, and studies on the interactions between these hormones may have important implications. We have investigated the effects of sodium intake, furosemide, and infusion of ANP on the urinary and metabolic (nonurinary) clearances of AVP in hydrated normal subjects. On a high sodium diet there was an increase in urine volume, sodium excretion, osmolal clearance, plasma ANP concentration, and urinary clearance and fractional excretion of AVP, with a decrease in PRA. The infusion of furosemide increased urine volume, sodium excretion, osmolal clearance, and PRA, but …

Nurses' Use Of Universal Precautions, Robin G.S. Jackson Jan 1990

Nurses' Use Of Universal Precautions, Robin G.S. Jackson

Theses : Honours

Research into Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Hepatitis B., and other bloodborne pathogens has led to the current worldwide awareness that patients can be admitted to hospitals with potentially fatal diseases that can remain undetected in blood and certain body fluids. This has resulted in a change of emphasis in Infection Control, namely isolating the source of infection rather than isolating the diagnosed infectious patient. One such technique recommended to protect healthcare workers, and other patients from nosocomial disease, is Universal Precautions. This study, using a descriptive survey design and structured questionnaire examined nurses' stated compliance to this technique in a …
