Decreasing Surgical Complications In Diabetic Patients, Bandana Mahato
Decreasing Surgical Complications In Diabetic Patients, Bandana Mahato
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Executive Summary
Objective: This manuscript aims to determine if controlling diabetes prior to undergoing low back surgery could decrease complications and disability.
Contexts: Despite the overwhelming information on the complications of uncontrolled diabetes, patients continue to have elevated HgA1C before having surgery. Furthermore, there is a plethora of data showing uncontrolled diabetic patients will have higher complications after surgery, yet patients continue to have elective surgery despite having unchecked diabetes. There are no clear guidelines for primary care providers or surgeons on when they should allow patients to have elective surgery. Therefore, it is vital that HgA1c needs to be …

Sepsis Criteria On Triage (Scot): Sepsis Alert, Kristie Givens
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Sepsis is a serious life-threatening condition that kills hundreds of thousands of patients every year and is a major leading cause of death. Sepsis is a medical emergency where early identification and prompt treatment are crucial for survival. Despite assessment tools for early recognition, a delay in antibiotic therapy remains. A sepsis alert (Code Sepsis) in the emergency department could improve sepsis care, spare countless lives, and save billions of dollars nationwide, annually. The implementation of a Code Sepsis will trigger a team to deliver immediate treatment and ensure one hour antibiotic administration times. The John Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice …
Fostering Critical Thinking Through Simulation: An Integrative Review, Sarah Knapp, Raymonta Green
Fostering Critical Thinking Through Simulation: An Integrative Review, Sarah Knapp, Raymonta Green
Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects
Over the past decade simulation has become a staple of nursing education with increasing use during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both manikin-based and virtual simulation are used to increase the preparedness of nursing students for their roles at the bedside. With the increasing experience-complexity gap, it is important that students enter the workforce prepared to effectively care for patients. Simulation allows students to work with a patient scenario without the possibility of injury; in simulation, mistakes are opportunities instead of harm. This integrative review searched the literature questioning if in pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing students, do virtual simulation and …

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Abstract The most common complaint seen in the Emergency Department, along with abdominal pain, is nonspecific chest pain. Often, these complaints cause prolonged lengths of stay in the ED, followed by hospital admissions and subsequent readmissions for various reasons. When thinking about these various reasons, the question for prevention of readmission comes to mind. What could we do as a department to keep patients from continuously using the Emergency Department as a primary point of care instead of outpatient facilities when necessary? Project Aim: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to initiate the need for a patient navigator …

The Impact Of Infectious Disease Education On The Knowledge And Confidence Of Assisted Living Staff, Kathryn Joy Smith
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Infectious disease outbreaks, like COVID-19, often catch much of the world by surprise, including health care workers. Health care workers faced deficits in training, resources, and staffing when responding to the pandemic. Staff of assisted living facilities fared even worse, with limited infectious disease education, infection control policies, and access to and training on personal protective equipment. Assisted living staff must have a protocol in place and have sufficient education on infectious diseases so they are prepared to respond and provide quality care to residents, should an outbreak occur. The purpose of this scholarly project was to examine the effects …

Nursing Student Course Papers
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a gram-positive coccus that normally colonizes the digestive and genital tract (Puopolo & Madoff, 2023). Worldwide, approximately 18% of pregnant people[1] carry GBS, and in the United States of America (USA), approximately 25% of pregnant people are GBS positive (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). GBS can be passed onto an infant during birth when it travels through the vaginal canal, a process called vertical transmission. Unfortunately, for newborns who have an immature immune system, GBS can result in early onset GBS disease requiring a lengthy stay in the NICU or even death. …

Nurses' Knowledge, Attitude, And Practices Towards Trauma Care Among Patients Admitted In The Surgical Wards At Kenyatta National Hospital, Shemmy Hussain Sharafat
MSc in Advanced Practice Nursing
Trauma-related injuries contribute to a higher mortality rate than the combined impact of prevalent infectious diseases. Notably, mortality secondary to trauma is disproportionately elevated in low- to middle-income countries compared to their developed counterparts. In these resource-constrained settings, trauma care stands out as one of the least developed aspects of healthcare, hindered by an uncoordinated system and limited resources. Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), positioned publicly and proximate to significant roadways, experiences a substantial influx of patients with trauma-related injuries. Despite preventive initiatives, the incidence of trauma-related injuries has surged significantly, placing a heavy burden on KNH. This study aims to …

Investigating Nurses Lived Experiences Toward Family Presence During Resuscitation To Enhance The Future Of Nursing Curriculum, Laurie Stone
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Death is inevitable, but dying alone can be an agonizing prospect for patients and their families. Family presence during resuscitation (FPDR) is a controversial but evidence-based concept that helps relieve some of the fear and anxiety for the family. Sadly, loved ones are often not allowed to be with the patient during resuscitation. FPDR importance is typically taught within the healthcare setting but still lacks implementation. By starting education while healthcare students are in a higher learning setting, this concept has a higher probability of success. To fill the gap concerning FPDR, this researcher interviewed nurses who have witnessed FPDR. …
