The Level Of Confidence Of School Nurses To Perform 46 Specified School Nursing Services, Camille Maysonave Brinks
The Level Of Confidence Of School Nurses To Perform 46 Specified School Nursing Services, Camille Maysonave Brinks
Master's Projects
The newly hired, novice school nurse often transitions from a baccalaureate program or an acute care setting to the school nurse role. This newly hired school nurse may be ill prepared for the wide range of services required in school nursing. The California, coastal school district where this pilot study took place, needed to develop an orientation program for newly hired school nurses. The purpose of the project was to ascertain confidence levels of novice school nurses in performing their new role as compared to experienced nurses. Benner's framework "From Novice to Expert" was used to guide this study. The …

Hiv/Aids Patients' Perceptions Of Nurse Caring Behaviors, Jennifer Lynn Jordahl
Masters Theses
The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine which nurse caring behaviors HIV/AIDS patient's perceived as most important. Subjects were recruited from an HIV/AIDS clinic in a large Midwestern city. Twenty-three subjects completed Cronin and Harrison (1988) Caring Behaviors Assessment (CBA) along with a patient demographic questionnaire and an open ended question asking, "Is there anything else a nurse could do to make you feel care for or about? If so what?".
Results of this study suggest that HIV/AIDS patients perceive expressive nurse caring behaviors, such as, listening to the patient, treating the patient with respect, and knowing when …
The Effectiveness Of A Strength Training Program On Extremity Strength, Flexibility, And Balance Of Elderly Women, Patricia L. Murphy
The Effectiveness Of A Strength Training Program On Extremity Strength, Flexibility, And Balance Of Elderly Women, Patricia L. Murphy
Master's Projects
This quasi-experimental study, partially replicating that of Nelson and Wernick (1997), compares balance, flexibility, and extremity strength before and after an 8-week weight-bearing exercise class. Six women, aged 69 to 85, used 1-5 pound wrist weights and ankle weights up to 1 o pounds. Pre-and post-exercise measurements of biceps curls, seated leg lifts with weights, one leg stand, and seated stretches were gathered. Results showed improvement in every category, with the greatest improvement (41.6%) in balance and the least (8.3%) in trunk flexibility. Nursing is uniquely positioned to assist this population by promoting, developing, and implementing such exercise programs.

Background: The infusion of amphotericin-B (AmB) often produces clinically distressing rigors and chills, which promptly abate with intravenous injection of meperidine, although its mechanism of action is unknown.
Objective: To examine the effects of meperidine on the transcription or secretion of Interleukin 1β (IL-1β) in human mononuclear leukocytes (MNL) exposed in vitro to the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) contained inEscherichia coli endotoxin or to AmB.
Methods: Blood was drawn from eight healthy adult volunteers. The blood was centrifuged, and the layer containing MNL was separated; incubated with various combinations of medium, meperidine, and AmB; then tested for IL-1 content to determine …
Hiv Transmission Risk Behaviors Of Hiv-Positive Adolescents In Mississippi, Kristi A. Henderson
Hiv Transmission Risk Behaviors Of Hiv-Positive Adolescents In Mississippi, Kristi A. Henderson
MSN Research Projects
Risk behaviors for transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus are prevalent among adolescents. One outcome of continued participation in risk behaviors is increased prevalence of HIV. Based on Fishbein and Ajzen's Theory of Reasoned Action (1975), a descriptive design was utilized to examine, the following research question: What are the HIV transmission risk behaviors of HIV-positive adolescents? The Henderson Risk Behavior Participation Survey was utilized to examine HIV transmission risk behaviors among adolescents already infected with HIV. The sample for this study was comprised of 24 adolescents age 11 to 21 years who were drawn from two infectious disease clinics …

Comparisons Of Outcomes In A Pediatric Primary Care Clinic In Patients Treated By A Physician Or A Nurse Practitioner, Ken Burnette
MSN Research Projects
Physician availability during the 2 0th century has waxed and waned. During periods of physician shortage and surplus, there have always been underserved segments of our society. Nurse practitioners (NPs) have provided care for these underserved populations. Unfortunately, 30 years after the first NPs began to practice there remain underserved populations and underutilized practitioners. The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes between physicians and practitioners. The research questions are the following: Is there a difference in patient's satisfaction between care provided by a physician and a nurse practitioner? Does care differ when initiated by a physician or a …

Immune Responses To Final Exams In Healthy And Asthmatic Adolescents, Duck-Hee Kang, Christopher L. Coe, Donna O. Mccarthy, William B. Ershler
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Immune responses to an academic stressor were examined in healthy and asthmatic adolescents with regard to their illness symptom reports. Eighty-seven high school students completed a health diary for 2 weeks and provided three blood samples during midsemester, final-exam, and postexam periods. During exam week, all students showed significant immunological alterations from baseline: Natural killer cell activity was significantly lower, whereas lymphocyte proliferation and neutrophil superoxide release were significantly higher. These immune changes tended to return toward baseline during the postexam period, but the enhanced neutrophil reactivity continued to rise. Overall, immunological responses were similar between asthmatic subjects and controls. …

Dietary Influences And Exposure To Cigarette Smoke On Myringotomy Rates Of Infants, Melanie Eller Thompson
Dietary Influences And Exposure To Cigarette Smoke On Myringotomy Rates Of Infants, Melanie Eller Thompson
MSN Research Projects
Breastfeeding has been identified as a protective measure to defend against infection, while cigarette smoking is linked with increasing the risk of infection. The purpose of this research was to determine if there is a relationship between dietary influences and exposure to cigarette smoke on myringotomy rates of infants. The Betty Neuman Systems Model was the theoretical framework which guided the study. The researcher, using a correlational ex post facto study design, sought an answer to the question: Is there a relationship between dietary influences and exposure to cigarette smoke on myringotomy rates of infants? A convenience sampling of 128 …
An Evaluation Of Needleless Intravenous Therapy Devices, Tina Jones
An Evaluation Of Needleless Intravenous Therapy Devices, Tina Jones
Theses
As the number of persons infected with bloodborne diseases continues to increase, it is paramount that all health care workers exhibit behaviors reflecting unerring compliance with universal precaution.
The majority of occupational exposures to potentially infectious blood and body fluids occur via needlestick injury. The morbidity and mortality from these exposures is significant. A review of research examining work practices mandated by the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard challenges their effectiveness. Principles identified provide insight into why work practice may not prevent needlesticks.
Several industries are developing new products to address this situation, but there are few data on how well these …

Health Locus Of Control And Health Behaviors In Hiv/Aids Individuals, Brian W. Higgerson
MSN Research Projects
Since the early 1980s AIDS has become a major pandemic. Health care practices and the motivational factors influencing these behaviors have become essential elements for health care providers to implement individualized care for persons with HIV or AIDS. The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to determine the relationship between health care behaviors and the Health Locus of Control in HIV/AIDS individuals. The Health Belief Model was used as the theoretical framework. The hypothesis stated that there would be no correlation between health care behaviors and the health locus of control in HIV/AIDS individuals. A convenience sample of HIV/AIDS …
Perception Of Emergency Department Registered Nurses Concerning The Role Of The Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner, Aarthur F. Rogers
Perception Of Emergency Department Registered Nurses Concerning The Role Of The Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner, Aarthur F. Rogers
MSN Research Projects
Emergency departments have become primary care sites for a substantial portion of the population. However, few emergency departments were designed to provide primary care to families or individuals. Implementation of the emergency department nurse practitioner (NP) has been proposed as a solution to providing comprehensive care and follow-up for non-urgent clients. Since emergency department NPs function in collaborative roles with other nurses, the perception of the emergency department registered nurses (RNs) needs to be delineated to verify acceptance and perceptions of this new expanded nursing role. The purpose of this study was to describe these acceptance and perceptual levels. King's …

Practice Nurses And Hepatitis B : Preventative Actions And Their Relationship To Health Beliefs, Helen Le Sueur
Practice Nurses And Hepatitis B : Preventative Actions And Their Relationship To Health Beliefs, Helen Le Sueur
Theses : Honours
Hepatitis B is a major, largely undiagnosed disease in the community and nurses working in doctors' surgeries (practice nurses) undertake many clinical tasks which may expose them to the Hepatitis B virus. Using the Health Belief Model as the theoretical framework, the purpose of this correlational-descriptive study was to determine what actions are taken, by practice nurses in Western Australia to protect themselves against Hepatitis B, and to what extent their health beliefs contribute to those actions. A response rate of 59% (118) was obtained from an anonymous, confidential questionnaire sent to a random sample of 200 practice nurses in …

The Environment: Alive, Whole, Interconnected And Interacting, Dorothy Kleffel Dnsc, Mph, Bsn, Rn
Dissertations
Nurses frequently care for individuals whose conditions are related to destructive environmental influences. Although the environment is a central construct in the nursing paradigm, its definition is client oriented, circumscribed, and does not adequately explain situations emanating from the larger physical, social, cultural, political, or economic spheres of the environment. This research described an expanded, ideal, environmental nursing domain derived from selected upstream scholars whose work has addressed broad environmental dimensions. Using the concept of future search, once this idealized environmental domain is envisioned, the nursing profession can begin to discover the knowledge base that is needed in order to …
Effects Of Touch On Anxiety Levels In Elders Seeking Health Care, Simon Peter Redmon Ii
Effects Of Touch On Anxiety Levels In Elders Seeking Health Care, Simon Peter Redmon Ii
