Evaluation Of A Special Teaching Program With Ambulatory Cardiac Patients, Mary L. Mcgregor Minns Apr 1976

Evaluation Of A Special Teaching Program With Ambulatory Cardiac Patients, Mary L. Mcgregor Minns

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was designed to test the hypotheses that ambulatory cardiac patients given a special teaching program would have increased understanding about their medication, make fewer medication errors, and know more about undesirable effects and how to handle them than patients not included in the special teaching program. Forty-one ambulatory cardiac patients were, after a random start, alternately assigned to an experimental or to a control group. All the patients were taking one or more of three different medications before hospitalization, during their hospital stay, and after their discharge. Three medications, digoxin (lanoxin), lasix, and nitroglycerin, were studied. The program …

Brokaw School Of Nursing Student Handbook, Circa 1976, Laura J. Mahlum Jan 1976

Brokaw School Of Nursing Student Handbook, Circa 1976, Laura J. Mahlum

IWU Digitized Nursing Archives

This pre-1976 nursing student handbook represents just one of many, spanning from the Brokaw Collegiate School of Nursing, 1976-1977, to the Illinois Wesleyan University School of Nursing Student Handbook, 2002-2003, housed in Tate Archives & Special Collections. Reading through a few of these, you can see the changes made over time, which demonstrate the evolution of nursing here at Illinois Wesleyan. The Brokaw handbook is only eight pages, while the one published in 2002 is twenty-eight, which makes sense as there were only twenty-two topics covered within those eight pages: all only having a few sentences underneath them. Over the …

The Extent To Which The Nursing Process Is Acknowledged By I.W.U'S Baccalaureate Nursing Graduates As Compared To Other Nursing Graduates Employed In This Community, Debra S. Schwieman Jan 1976

The Extent To Which The Nursing Process Is Acknowledged By I.W.U'S Baccalaureate Nursing Graduates As Compared To Other Nursing Graduates Employed In This Community, Debra S. Schwieman

Honors Projects

The importance of the nursing process has been demonstrated in the past decade and therefore a need exists to investigate whether or not nurses feel they are able to utilize that process to its maximum and whether or not barriers exist which prevent such maximum utilization. The utilization of the nursing process in evaluation of nursing care has been demonstrated. The criterion for evaluation of record keeping has been nursing care. Therefore, the nursing process is related to the quality of nursing care and to the quality of record keeping.

Sexual Adjustment After Myocardial Infarction, Brenda Hove Long

Theses and Dissertations

"Cardiovascular diseases claim more American lives than all other causes of death combined,”1 as stated in the American Heart Association's Heart Facts 1975. In 1972, it was estimated that 1,036,560 individuals died of cardiovascular disease; 683,100 of these were attributable to acute myocardial infarction.2 In addition, an estimated 28,420,000 Americans have some type of cardiovascular disease at a cost of $20 billion annually.3 The figures ”bring home" a stalking reality; cardiovascular disease is epidemic in this country, the incidence and ramifications of which make it an ever-present threat to all Americans. The greatest threat is heart attack, …

Field Test Of An Experimental Language Development Program, Sadie Patton Fant Aug 1975

Field Test Of An Experimental Language Development Program, Sadie Patton Fant

MSN Research Projects

According to Lee (1971), during the past years, most research in the areas of language development has been concerned with the study of normal children. Nation (1972) reported that educators, speech pathol ogists, linguists, psychologists, and others have analyzed the structure of language, the development of language and the functions of language in human behavior. In the past, according to Nation, each discipline has tended to move in a particular direction without becoming aware of the research being done in other disciplines. Presently an increasing number of psycholinguists have been making use of the information from other disciplines, thus providing …

A Descriptive Study Of Women's Attitudes Towards Obtaining Or Not Obtaining Papanicolaou Smears, Linda J. Shults Jun 1975

A Descriptive Study Of Women's Attitudes Towards Obtaining Or Not Obtaining Papanicolaou Smears, Linda J. Shults

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It was the purpose of this study to identify the attitudes of a selected group of women which influenced their participation in Papanicolaou testing. These attitudes were inferred from the reasons women gave for obtaining the test. The subjects were randomly selected from the telephone book of a medium-sized town in Southern California. The 135 women who participated in the telephone interview were considered to be the respondents in the study.

A review of the literature revealed that through the annual use of the Papanicolaou smear, approximately 11,000 deaths every year from uterine and cervical cancer could be prevented, Attitudes …

A Study Of The Relationships Between Attitudes Of Student Nurses And Graduate Nurses Toward Death And The Type Of Care Student Nurses And Graduate Nurses Give Or Would Give Dying Patients, Paula Raibley

Honors Projects

There are two events that every human being experiences, birth and death. In our society we talk freely about birth and the birth process. However, many sociologists and psychologists have labeled death and the act of dying as "taboo topics" in American society.

Daily Temperature Rhythm In Hospitalized Female Patients, Phyllis L. Mcelmurry Mar 1975

Daily Temperature Rhythm In Hospitalized Female Patients, Phyllis L. Mcelmurry

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study was designed to determine the hour when temperature peaks occur in adult hospitalized females, and to find if factors such as age and natural or surgical menopause with replacement therapy affect the thermal circadian cycle. Previous studies indicated that the temperature peak occurs in afternoon or early evening, but there were no investigations to determine if aging, sex, or menopause affects the temperature cycle.

The sample included 62 female patients, 29 between 21 and 62 years of age, and 33 between 65 and 90 years. Each subject admitted to the study was screened against fifteen qualifying criteria. Some …

The Relationship Of Locus Of Control Of The Diabetic Patient And Compliance With Medical Regimen, Lois Daniel Mar 1975

The Relationship Of Locus Of Control Of The Diabetic Patient And Compliance With Medical Regimen, Lois Daniel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The literature indicates that many diabetic patients do not adhere to their prescribed medical regimen and that there is a need to discover factors that stimulate compliant behavior. It has been proposed that the patient's decision to accept or reject treatment has many determinants. This study explored the effect of one such determinant, the locus of control (the source of the stimulus for a person's behavior). It was hypothesized that a person with an internal locus (one who believes his actions influence his future) would be more likely to comply with a medical regimen than one with an external locus …

A Survey Of Parental Knowledge Of Asthma, Nancy Aldred O'Donnell Jan 1975

A Survey Of Parental Knowledge Of Asthma, Nancy Aldred O'Donnell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of parents' knowledge regarding asthma.

Twenty-five parents of children who have asthma were interviewed during their child's hospitalization for status asthmaticus. Adequate knowledge about environmental control and medication was noted in the majority of the subjects but over half were unable to explain the pathological changes which caused wheezeing. While most parents appear to have adequate knowledge of medications and environmental control on which to base their decisions about their child’s care there appears to be a need for more information regarding the pathophysiology.
