Health Risk Appraisal And Health Promotion Behavior In Young Adults, Diane L. Hanna Jan 1982

Health Risk Appraisal And Health Promotion Behavior In Young Adults, Diane L. Hanna

Theses and Dissertations

Health Risk Appriaisal (HRA) is gaining widespread popularity as a health promotion strategy. Yet there are limited studies to date to assess the impact of HRA on health behavior, particularly among young populations. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of individual HRA results as a stimulus for young adults to pursue health promoting behavior. It was hypothesized that young adults exposed to the results of their personal HRA would demonstrate a significantly higher health habits change score than would young adults given the HRA, but not exposed to its results.

A pretest-posttest, control group design was …

The Father's Role During Childbirth And The Neonatal Period In Three Cultures, Sarah J. Bucknell Jan 1982

The Father's Role During Childbirth And The Neonatal Period In Three Cultures, Sarah J. Bucknell

Honors Projects

One area in which culture is particularly pervasive is during childbirth and the surrounding period . ( Brownlee 1978, p. 1 98 ) In particular, the role of the father is thought to be especially susceptible to cultural influences because he is less biologically-linked to the infant than the mother. ( Clark 1 978, p. 15 ; May 1978, p. 8 ) However, no studies were found that examine the role of the father from a cultural group during childbirth and the neonatal period. The activities of the father during childbirth, if mentioned at all, are limited to a sentence …

The Relationship Of Role Organization And Role Deprivation To Nurses' Views Toward The Requirement For Entry Into Professional Practice And Its Related Issues, Paula G. Morton Jan 1982

The Relationship Of Role Organization And Role Deprivation To Nurses' Views Toward The Requirement For Entry Into Professional Practice And Its Related Issues, Paula G. Morton

Dissertations and Theses

A national resolution to alter the educational and practice requirements for nurses by 1985 has been adopted in Oregon. It has been theorized that how nurses organize their multiple roles and the degrees of role deprivation they experience will affect their views toward professional issues. Prior research suggests there be a relationship between certain demographic variables and nurses' role organization and role deprivation.

The study sought to establish the relationship of selected demographic variables and the variables of type of role organization and deprivation to nurses' views of four facets of the 1985 Resolution. The intent was to examine the …

The Effect Of Exercise On Blood Flow In Pregnant Guinea Pigs, Marjorie Correll Sladek Jun 1981

The Effect Of Exercise On Blood Flow In Pregnant Guinea Pigs, Marjorie Correll Sladek

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Recent investigations have shown decreased fetal weight in pregnant animals who were exercised regularly during pregnancy (Gilbert; Nelson; Longo, 1979; Terada, 1974). The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate fetal weight gain and measure blood flow in pregnant guinea pigs who were exercised 45 minutes per day; and thus answer the hypothesis that prolonged maternal exercise will cause decreased weight gain and decreased placental blood flow during pregnancy.

Twenty pregnant guinea pigs were exercised 15 minutes three times daily from 10 days gestation to approximately 60-62 days gestation (67 days being term) and were compared with 19 control …

Environmental Enrichment And Nursing Therapy With Comatose Patients : Two Case Studies, Marilyne R. Sayler Jun 1981

Environmental Enrichment And Nursing Therapy With Comatose Patients : Two Case Studies, Marilyne R. Sayler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

As a part of a larger research project with comatose patients the problem stated for this portion of the research study was to investigate the potential for identifying whether or not the quality of nursing care for comatose patients could be improved by nursing therapy with environmental enrichment and meaningful systematic orienting stimuli given by professional nurse clinicians and a patient's significant others. The effects of the orienting stimuli were measured by observable changes in arousal patterns in serial electroencephalograms (EEGs) , level of arousal as scored on the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), and selected measures of recovery outcome (RO). …

An Introspection Of The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner, Cynthia H. Gaskins Jun 1981

An Introspection Of The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner, Cynthia H. Gaskins

MSN Research Projects

The purpose of this research was to investigate whether nurse practitioners (NPs) desired to function collaboratively in a close relationship with a physician. The researcher also attempted to see if the tasks that NPs desired or believed themselves capable of performing were appropriate for the role as determined by a panel of authorities . A researcher-designed questionnaire was distributed to all licensed Mississippi NPs at the March meeting of NPs in Louisville, Mississippi , who volunteered to participate . Since some licensed Mississippi NPs were not present at this meeting, questionnaires were mailed to the remaining licensed NPs known to …

Women's Health Beliefs About Breast Cancer And Self-Examination, Linda P. Kraus Jun 1981

Women's Health Beliefs About Breast Cancer And Self-Examination, Linda P. Kraus

MSN Research Projects

The descriptive method of research was employed in developing this study to assess women's health beliefs about breast cancer and self-examination. The sample consisted of 50 women from rural Northeast Mississippi. Age, occupation, educational level and number of years that they had lived in the area varied. It was hypothesized that (1) when health beliefs of women were compared to the actual practice of breast self-examination, (2) when knowledge was compared to the actual practice of breast self-examination, and (3) when health beliefs were compared to knowledge, there would be no significant correlation. To test these hypotheses a questionnaire developed …

The Effects Of Weekly Or Biweekly Clinical Problem-Solving Supervision On Symptoms Of Burnout In Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurses, Jane M. Bacon

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The syndrome of burnout, which involves negative emotional, psychological, and physical reactions to continuous, work-related stress, is becoming a widely-recognized job hazard for employees in health care settings. The main objective of this retrospective and descriptive study was to investigate the effect of weekly or biweekly, clinical, problem-solving supervision on the following symptoms of burn out on psychiatric/mental health nurses: absenteeism, job turnover rate, job performance ratings. The sample consisted of two groups of psychiatric/mental health nurses who were employees of a major midwestern, private psychiatric treatment facility. The problem was to determine whether the occurrence or reduction of the …
