Patient Satisfaction With The Nurse Practitioner, Diane Mcmahen Aug 1995

Patient Satisfaction With The Nurse Practitioner, Diane Mcmahen

MSN Research Projects

Due to the increased need for nurse practitioners to provide primary health care and the current national emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention, nurse practitioners can help solve the health care delivery dilemma. The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify the level of satisfaction for patients who received care by a nurse practitioner. Orem's Nursing Systems Theory was utilized to guide the study. The research questions were is there a difference in the perception of patient satisfaction when comparing nurse practitioners and physicians as health care providers? and do demographic variables correlate to patient use of a …

Residents' And Nursing Staff's Perceptions Of The Needs Of Nursing Home Residents, Joan M. Pritchard Aug 1995

Residents' And Nursing Staff's Perceptions Of The Needs Of Nursing Home Residents, Joan M. Pritchard

MSN Research Projects

Historically, perceptions of nursing home residents have been based on stereotypes which compromise individuality. Care has been structured for efficiency of the organization, with staff emphasis on activities of daily living (ADL). Indeed, most residents move into nursing homes when they can no longer manage alone. The purpose of this descriptive study was to replicate research by Lindgren and Linton (1991) which focused on perceptions of residents' needs in nursing homes. Pender's Health Promotion Model provided the theoretical framework. The following research question was addressed : Do residents and nursing staff differ in their perceptions of residents' needs in nursing …

Women's Perception Of Heart Disease As A Health Risk Associated With Identified Risk Factors, Kathy Mckay Aug 1995

Women's Perception Of Heart Disease As A Health Risk Associated With Identified Risk Factors, Kathy Mckay

MSN Research Projects

Heart disease has been identified as the leading cause of death in women in the United States, affecting an estimated 21,000 women under the age of 65. While these figures are alarming, population survey data have shown women do not perceive heart disease as a priority health problem- The purpose of this descriptive study was to investigate women's perception of heart disease as a health risk. The Health Belief Model served as the theoretical framework for this study. Two research questions guided this study: Is there a significant correlation between selected demographic variables and perception of heart disease as a …

A sample of 90 subjects, recovering from a recent cardiac event, was selected from two acute care medical centers in southwestern Michigan and northwestern Michigan. Each subject responded to a mailed questionnaire six to eight weeks post hospitalization which assessed perceived benefits, perceived barriers and self-efficacy as they related to a regular, aerobic exercise program.; Descriptive statistics, along with t-test and chi-square were used to analyze the data. Findings include (a) …

Health Promotion Lifestyle Behaviors Of African American Women In A Rural Setting, Phyllis Polk Johnson Jul 1995

Health Promotion Lifestyle Behaviors Of African American Women In A Rural Setting, Phyllis Polk Johnson

MSN Research Projects

A complete understanding of health promoting behavior patterns has not been achieved by health care professionals. The lack of understanding of health promoting behavior patterns is particularly true in relation to African American women. The lack of understanding is in part due to the limited research conducted regarding health care practices among minority populations. The purpose of this descriptive study was to describe the health promoting lifestyle behaviors of African American women in a rural setting in Mississippi. The Madeleine Leninger Cultural Care Theory was used as the theoretical framework for this study. Data were collected utilizing the Health Promotion …

Incidence Of Cervical Dysplasia In Women With And Without Cytology Suggestive Of Human Papillomavirus, Deanna Mackie Jul 1995

Incidence Of Cervical Dysplasia In Women With And Without Cytology Suggestive Of Human Papillomavirus, Deanna Mackie

MSN Research Projects

Significant controversy has existed in the areas of management of women with cervical cytological diagnoses of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) and ASCUS suggestive of human papillomavirus (HPV). The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of cervical dysplasia in women with and without cytology suggestive of HPV in order to improve patient management. The Bethesda System was utilized as the basis for a conceptual physiological framework. Orem's self-care theory was shown to support the framework. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no difference in the incidence of cervical dysplasia in women with cytology suggestive …

The Influence Of National Culture On Work-Related Values And Job Satisfaction Between American And Filipino Registered Nurses, Karin Polifko-Harris

Health Services Research Dissertations

This ex post facto study explored the effects of national culture on work-related values and job satisfaction between American and Filipino registered nurses. Three questionnaires were used: Hofstede's Values Survey Module 94, the Survey of Work Values and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire. The all-female sample comprised 88 American and 56 Filipino registered nurses employed at an urban acute care facility in South Hampton Roads, Virginia.

A major finding of the study is the direction and intensity of the country scores in the Values Survey Module 94, especially in the Filipinos' scores. The masculinity value was reported as strongly feminine for …

Energy Expenditure During Antiorthostatic Bed Rest (Simulated Microgravity), Randall J. Gretebeck, Dale A. Schoeller, Everett K. Gibson, Helen W. Lane Jun 1995

Energy Expenditure During Antiorthostatic Bed Rest (Simulated Microgravity), Randall J. Gretebeck, Dale A. Schoeller, Everett K. Gibson, Helen W. Lane

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Few studies have addressed the interaction between energy balance and lean body mass in healthy subjects during spaceflight or its simulations. We used doubly labeled water to measure total energy expenditure (TEE) in nine healthy adult men during two 7-day periods, once before and once during a 10-day head-down bed-rest period. Mean TEE was 21% less during than before bed rest; however, neither basal (BEE) nor resting (REE) energy expenditures changed, implying that the lesser TEE resulted from a reduction in physical activity. During the bed-rest period, energy intake was 563 +/- 280 kcal/day higher than TEE (P < 0.05) but body weight, fluid balance, BEE, and REE did not change relative to before bed rest. However, the small but statistically significant increase in body fat (0.44 +/- 0.67 kg, P < 0.05) during the bed-rest period suggests that body weight alone does not accurately reflect changes in energy balance during antiorthostatic bed rest.

The Impact Of A Health Education Program On The Attitudes Of African-American Hypertensive Clients Regarding Adherence To A Prescribed Medical Regimen, Teresa Y. Mcpherson May 1995

The Impact Of A Health Education Program On The Attitudes Of African-American Hypertensive Clients Regarding Adherence To A Prescribed Medical Regimen, Teresa Y. Mcpherson

Theses & Dissertations

This quasi-experimental study examined the effect of an educational program on the attitudes of hypertensive African-American clients regarding their adherence to a prescribed medical regimen.

Despite increased public awareness and improved treatment in hypertension, poorly controlled hypertension continues to be a significant problem especially among blacks and other minority populations in the United States (Shea, Misra, Ehlich, Field, & Francis, 1991). On the basis of different experiences, people may form different beliefs and, therefore different attitudes about the consequences of performing or not performing a behavior (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980). Studies have indicated that a variety of factors such as …

Care Of Aging Parents: The Experiences Of Middle-Aged Filipino Women, Carmen B. Toledo Galang Dnsc, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine and analyze parent care as experienced by middle-aged Filipino women, particularly those who have resided in the United States for over 20 years. There is little information known about this topic; therefore, a grounded theory study design was utilized. Open-ended, semi-structured interviews of 29 Filipino women were conducted in English and/or Tagalog, and at times a combination of both languages. Data were transcribed verbatim from the audio-recorded interviews and analyzed using a constant comparative method of analytic induction. Field notes were kept and patterns of observation were analyzed according to their significance. …

A Model Of Patient Satisfaction And Behavioral Intention In Managed Care, Diane Sturdy Greeneich Dnsc, Ms, Rn May 1995

A Model Of Patient Satisfaction And Behavioral Intention In Managed Care, Diane Sturdy Greeneich Dnsc, Ms, Rn

Dissertations

Determination of patient outcomes associated with new and return business is a primary objective of the managed care marketplace. Identification of variables which contribute to both positive and negative patient experience in managed care systems is crucial to their effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to test the functional relationships between the variables of nurse practitioner attributes and behaviors, patient perceptions of the managed care system, and outcomes of patient satisfaction and intention to return to and recommend the managed care system. Functional relationships were measured with the Patient Satisfaction Semantic Differential (Greeneich and Long, 1992), and the Service …

A History Of The Concept Of Creativity In Western Nursing: A Cultural Feminist Perspective, Karen K. Fritz Dnsc, Ms, Ba, Rn May 1995

A History Of The Concept Of Creativity In Western Nursing: A Cultural Feminist Perspective, Karen K. Fritz Dnsc, Ms, Ba, Rn

Dissertations

Using historical methodology, this study examined the concept of creativity in Western nursing from a cultural feminist perspective. An exploration of the concept was accomplished by means of a review emanating from the English literature of Western nursing and its allied disciplines of education and psychology. Two distinct views of creativity were delineated--the classical and the contemporary. The classical understanding required the completion of a major product or attainment in order for creativity to be ascribed. In contrast, the contemporary view was that of a novel, unrestrained thought process. It required no creative work or attainment for its ascription. The …
