Staff Education To Improve Nurses’ Knowledge On Medication Administration Error Prevention, Francoise Tabe

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This staff education project aimed to enhance nurses’ knowledge on medication administration error prevention through targeted education interventions. Medication administration errors are a significant concern in health care, leading to patient harm and reduced quality of care. This project addressed the gap in nursing knowledge regarding strategies to prevent these errors, with the goal of improving patient safety and outcomes. The practice-focused question explored in this project was the following: How does implementing an education program affect nurses’ knowledge and practices related to medication error prevention? The purpose of this doctoral project was to educate nurses on best practices for …

Penzias, Morris Ondieki Ogero, Robert Tillya, Irabi Kassim, Olabisi Dosunmu, Opeyemi Odedere, Hannah Mwaniki, Vincent Ochieng, Dolphine Mochache, William Macharia

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Health Facility Assessments (HFAs) are important for measuring and tracking service readiness for small and sick newborn care (SSNC). NEST360 Alliance aims to reduce neonatal mortality in four countries (Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania). NEST360 and UNICEF facilitated HFA tool design with ministries of health in four African countries and developed two complimentary approaches to summarize readiness. Using the NEST360/UNICEF HFA tool, we collected data, developed two service readiness scoring approaches for SSNC (standards-based scoring by adapted World Health Organization (WHO) health system building blocks (HSBBs) and assessing service readiness across the health system, and level-2+ scoring by WHO clinical interventions), …

Nursing Advocacy In Maternal Health For Women With Sickle Cell Disease, Jodian Lyn Jun 2025

Nursing Advocacy In Maternal Health For Women With Sickle Cell Disease, Jodian Lyn

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Over 80% of pregnancy-related deaths among Black women in the U.S. are preventable. Racial disparities, biases, and discrimination negatively impact maternal health, by contributing to higher stress levels, affecting pregnancy outcomes. The maternal death rate for Black women with sickle cell (SCD) is 629, Black women without SCD is 12, and the general population 6 per 100,000. The voices of these women are often missing in research.

This qualitative study, using Hermeneutic Phenomenological approach, explores the lived experiences of Black women with SCD during pregnancy. Data analysis was completed using an interpretive framework to elucidate the essence of the lived …

Tobacco, Alcohol, And Poverty In Lao Pdr Based On National Survey Analysis, Robert M. Semakula Jun 2025

Tobacco, Alcohol, And Poverty In Lao Pdr Based On National Survey Analysis, Robert M. Semakula

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Tobacco and alcohol use are among the most prevalent and harmful addictive behaviors globally, including in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). In Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific, substance use patterns are shaped by cultural, social, economic, policyrelated, and environmental factors. This study aimed to: (1) explore associations between different patterns of alcohol and tobacco use among men and women in Lao PDR, and (2) investigate the effect of poverty on the relationship between alcohol and tobacco use. We conducted a secondary analysis of the 2013 Lao National Adult Tobacco Survey (N = 9,706), a nationally representative sample …

Virtual Reality In Undergraduate And Postgraduate Nursing Education: A Scoping Review Protocol Integrating Data Mining For Topic Discovery, Celeste Alfes Jun 2025

Virtual Reality In Undergraduate And Postgraduate Nursing Education: A Scoping Review Protocol Integrating Data Mining For Topic Discovery, Celeste Alfes

Faculty Scholarship

Virtual Reality (VR) encompasses a range of computer-based technologies that simulate complex scenarios, offering immersive, experiential learning in a controlled virtual environment. In nurs- ing education, VR has the potential to enhance both technical and non-technical competencies. However, the existing literature on VR in nursing education is fragmented, making it challenging to fully grasp its scope, applications, and emerging trends. This scoping review protocol outlines a systematic approach to mapping the existing literature on the use of VR in undergraduate and postgraduate nursing education. Following Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines and the PRISMA- ScR 2020 framework, the review will include studies …

Nursing Education Research In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review And Bibliometric Analysis, Beth Waweru, Peter Gatiti, Serah Wachira

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Nursing education is pivotal for ensuring competent healthcare professionals, and its improvement is essential for enhancing the quality of health care systems globally. This study focuses on nursing education research in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) over the last decade, employing both bibliometric analysis and systematic review methodologies. The bibliometric analysis reveals an evolving landscape of nursing education research in SSA, offering insights into trends, key countries, journals, and predominant research themes. Notably, the study identifies a scarcity of literature using bibliometric approaches in nursing research, addressing this gap by providing a comprehensive overview of the field. The systematic review, guided by the …

Working With Patients Who Self-Injure: An Open Label Study Of An Educational Intervention To Upskill Emergency Nurses On Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Penelope Hasking, Amanda Aiyana, Jonathon Burcham, Samantha Carey, Joanne M. Dickson, Daniel Fatovich, Logan Hopkins, Eme John, Shirley Mcgough, Chloe Mclean, Irene Ngune, Alex Wheeler

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), deliberate damage to body tissue with no intent to die, is not engaged with suicidal intent but is the most reliable predictor of later suicidal behaviour. This makes efforts to reduce self-injury critical. Emergency departments can be the gateways to care for many people who have self-injured and optimal sites for interventions that promote recovery. However, emergency nurses have anecdotally reported that they lack training and feel ill-equipped to provide care for patients who self-injure. In this open label trial (where both participants and researchers were aware who received the intervention), all nurses in a metropolitan emergency …
