Examining The Relationship Among Physical And Psychological Health, Parent And Peer Attachment, And Cyberbullying In Adolescents In Urban And Suburban Environments, Jemica Monique Carter

Wayne State University Dissertations

Cyberbullying is a new phenomenon that has received substantial attention via media. An extensive review of the literature revealed limited nursing research on this topic. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of cyberbullying on adolescents' physical (e.g., headache, stomachache, etc.) and psychosocial (e.g., self-esteem, depression, post traumatic stress syndrome, etc.) outcomes. Individuals who experience repeated traditional bullying are at increased risk for experiencing repeated incidents of cyberbullying. Research has shown that effects of cyberbullying may be more traumatic than traditional bullying because victims can be bullied 24 hours and 7 days a week, on and off …

A Salutogenic Framework To Understand Disparity In Breast Cancer Screening Behavior In African American Women, Regina Conway-Phillips Jan 2011

A Salutogenic Framework To Understand Disparity In Breast Cancer Screening Behavior In African American Women, Regina Conway-Phillips

Dissertations

African American women (AAW) have the highest breast cancer mortality rate than any other racial or ethnic group. Limited access to care reduces mammography screening for AAW. Despite barriers, some AAW engage in breast cancer screening (BCS) behaviors like mammography. The salutogenic theory of health focuses on positive health behaviors and offers a framework to understand personal factors which allow some AAW to overcome adversity and engage in BCS. Sense of coherence (SOC) is central to salutogenic theory. Individuals with greater SOC utilize available resources to attain optimal health. This study: 1) Evaluated the contribution of SOC, social support and …

Mentoring Nurse Practitioners In A Hospital Setting, Rodica S. Pop Jan 2011

Mentoring Nurse Practitioners In A Hospital Setting, Rodica S. Pop

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

In 2009, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners report identified more than 125, 000 Nurse Practitioners (NP) working in the United States. As the number of NPs increases and their role expands, questions about their work satisfaction and ability to learn and perform the role arise. Since NPs have to combine a nursing philosophy with a medical care model, it is often difficult to mediate the two approaches and fully understand the role. Mentoring has been successfully used to facilitate role transition and role understanding for nurses and physicians, but has been rarely studied in NPs. Although widely used in …

Health Screenings Beyond A History Of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Secondary Analysis Of The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, Johnnetta Phillips Kelly

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects over 200,000 women in the United States each year placing them at a sevenfold risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus within a decade of delivery as compared to women without GDM. Diabetes has been projected to become more epidemic among women yet, a paucity of research has examined glucose screening trends beyond the postpartum period and longitudinal studies are few among those with a reproductive history of GDM. Suboptimal glucose screening and delayed diabetes detection can lead to an increased risk of cardiometabolic morbidity and mortality. Therefore, this study was designed to examine the …

Duplicated Laboratory Tests : A Hospital Audit And Evaluation Of A Computerized Alert Intervention, Sharon Bridges

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Laboratory testing is necessary when it contributes to the overall clinical management of the patient. Redundant testing, however, is often unnecessary and expensive and contributes to overall reductions in healthcare system efficiency. The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, to evaluate the frequency of ordering duplicate laboratory tests in hospitalized patients and the costs associated with this practice. Second, it was designed to determine if the use of a computerized alert or prompt will reduce the total number of unnecessarily duplicated Acute Hepatitis Profile (AHP) laboratory tests. This two-phase study took place in an inpatient facility that was part …
