The Effects Of A Community-Based Hospice Experience On Attitudes And Self Perceived Competencies Of Senior Nursing Students, Irene Gilliland Apr 2011

The Effects Of A Community-Based Hospice Experience On Attitudes And Self Perceived Competencies Of Senior Nursing Students, Irene Gilliland

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Death is a universal phenomenon. Of all health professionals, the nurse is the most likely one to be present at the time of death. Although nursing curricula provide mandatory clinical experiences in labor and delivery, pediatrics, psychiatry and adult medical surgical areas, there is no mandatory requirement for a clinical experience with death. In fact, before 1999, there was not even a requirement to teach about death and dying in undergraduate nursing curricula. As a result, students (who later become nurses), feel unprepared to take care of dying patients. Because death has meanings beyond just the cessation of vital signs, …

The Adverse Effects Of The Cardiopulmonary Bypass Machine, Shannon Renee Steidl Apr 2011

The Adverse Effects Of The Cardiopulmonary Bypass Machine, Shannon Renee Steidl

Senior Honors Theses

Throughout the United States, the use of the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machine during cardiac surgery has become a widely employed practice. Although this machine has simplified cardiac surgery by allowing the heart to be stopped, the technology also causes adverse effects on a patient’s body and cognitive functions. These include complications of the inflammatory system, heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain. Using the CPB can not only cause physical harm, but it can also lead to cognitive decline that can affect the patient’s quality of life. Studying the CPB in terms of its adverse effects is imperative to making any effort …

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

Recruiting, retaining, and educating advanced practice nurses is essential to meet the growing need for advanced practice nurses in rural and urban communities. Through the support of Health Resources and Services Administration funding, the urban school of nursing expanded its MSN program and implemented the graduate curriculum on its rural campus by utilizing emerging online and distance education technologies. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide an overview of expanding an existing MSN program offered in an urban, traditional classroom setting to rural graduate nursing students via an online synchronous format. In addition, the article will describe the rural …

Compassionate Care, The Patient Perspective, Lori Burnell Phd Apr 2011

Compassionate Care, The Patient Perspective, Lori Burnell Phd

Dissertations

Professional mandates call for nurses to respond with compassion (e.g., American Nurses Association [ANA] Code of Ethics, International Council of Nurses [ICN]) and countless hospital mission and vision statements prominently display compassion as their fundamental purpose. As a component of healthcare and nursing models, however, defining characteristics and standards are inconsistent. Compassion as a means of establishing a connection on a spiritual level abounds in the literature (Buck, 2006; Grant, 2004; O'Brien, 2008; Schultz et al., 2007) and is documented as a nursing requirement (e.g., ANA, ICN); however, it remains virtually uncharted from the lens of the patient. Through interpretive …

The Relationship Of Physical Activity, Eating Behaviors, And Hunger Control To Weight Loss And Quality Of Life In Gastric Banding Patients, Nancy Baugh Mar 2011

The Relationship Of Physical Activity, Eating Behaviors, And Hunger Control To Weight Loss And Quality Of Life In Gastric Banding Patients, Nancy Baugh

Theses and Dissertations

Gastric banding as a weight loss surgery has increased in popularity in the United States since its approval by the Food and Drug Administration in 2001. Successful weight loss after weight loss surgery is most frequently defined as greater than 50 percent of excess weight loss (EWL). Systematic reviews show that the band is widely effective in achieving successful weight loss in most patients, however individual studies show more inconsistent outcomes. Although previous research supports gastric bypass surgery as having a positive effect on quality of life after gastric bypass, there is very little data to support this relationship in …

Family Presence During Resuscitation And/Or Invasive Procedures In The Emergency Department: One Size Does Not Fit All, Renae L. Dougal, Jill H. Anderson, Kathy Reavy, Christine C. Shirazi

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Family presence during resuscitation and/or invasive procedures is receiving more attention today as it speaks to the heart of patient and family-centered care. Family members are the most important support for their loved ones during vulnerable times such as a life-threatening event. Although family presence during resuscitation and/or invasive procedures is becoming a more accepted practice in hospital settings, only 5% of hospitals in the United States have unit policies guiding the practice of family presence in specialty settings.1-5 There is a need for family presence to be studied in non-academic hospitals and in other specialty settings such as …

Relationship Between Self-Stigma And Personal Empowerment Among People Who Have Severe Mental Illness, Diane Fischer Hickman Phd Mar 2011

Relationship Between Self-Stigma And Personal Empowerment Among People Who Have Severe Mental Illness, Diane Fischer Hickman Phd

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-stigma of mental illness and personal empowerment among people who have a severe mental illness. It had been hypothesized that self-stigma of mental illness and personal empowerment are at opposite end of a continuum. As such, individuals who perceive themselves in a stigmatized manner tend to reciprocally perceive themselves as being relatively powerless, rather than having a strong sense of personal empowerment. Likewise, individuals who perceive themselves as having a relatively strong sense of personal empowerment tend to experience a low degree of self-stigma. To test this hypothesis, a …

Improving Diabetic Outcomes With Caring Communication: Identifying Communication Patterning For The Human Diabetic, James R. Kennett Phd

Dissertations

Introduction. The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of caring communication for people living with diabetes (PLD) and the relationship to diabetic outcomes. Caring communication has not been studied for improving diabetic outcomes. Randomized control trials (RCTs) direct care, however people do not do what they told, they need to be included in their care. PLD need a voice to establish what is important to them. Incorporating medical, communication, and nursing science as multidisciplinary approach within a theoretical framework can be predictive diabetic outcomes. Methods. A correlational cross sectional survey design study was done. A sample of …

The Effects Of A Closed-Chain, Eccentric Training Program On Hamstring Injuries Of A Professional Football Cheerleading Team, Jay S. Greenstein, Barton N. Bishop, Jean S. Edward, Robert V. Topp

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Objective

Hamstring injuries are a common occurrence among professional football cheerleaders. The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of an eccentric, closed-chain hamstring exercise intervention on hamstring injury–associated pain during the course of the football season among professional football cheerleaders.

Methods

Forty-three female cheerleaders participated in an eccentric, closed-chain hamstring exercise intervention protocol provided by doctors of chiropractic that incorporated loops of elastic-band or Thera-Band Loops (Hygenic Corporation, Akron, OH) during practice and at home during the regular football season. Hamstring injury–related pain was assessed in June, during team selection; in September, at the start of the …
