Topical Menthol, Ice, Peripheral Blood Flow, And Perceived Discomfort, Robert V. Topp, Elizabeth R. Ledford, Dean E. Jacks
Topical Menthol, Ice, Peripheral Blood Flow, And Perceived Discomfort, Robert V. Topp, Elizabeth R. Ledford, Dean E. Jacks
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Context : Injury management commonly includes decreasing arterial blood flow to the affected site in an attempt to reduce microvascular blood flow and edema and limit the induction of inflammation. Applied separately, ice and menthol gel decrease arterial blood flow, but the combined effects of ice and menthol gel on arterial blood flow are unknown.
Objectives : To compare radial artery blood flow, arterial diameter, and perceived discomfort before and after the application of 1 of 4 treatment conditions.
Design : Experimental crossover design.
Setting : Clinical laboratory.
Participants or Other Participants : Ten healthy men, 9 healthy women (mean …
The Effect Of Either Topical Menthol Or A Placebo On Functioning And Knee Pain Among Patients With Knee Oa, Robert V. Topp, Joseph A. Brosky, David Pieschel
The Effect Of Either Topical Menthol Or A Placebo On Functioning And Knee Pain Among Patients With Knee Oa, Robert V. Topp, Joseph A. Brosky, David Pieschel
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common health problem with symptoms including reduced functioning and joint pain. Protracted pharmacological management of knee OA is associated with side effects including gastrointestinal, renal, and neurological dysfunction.Menthol gels have been used with limited empirical support to relieve pain and improve functioning among individual with OA. The purpose of this study was to compare the ability to complete functional tasks and knee pain while completing functional tasks among patients with knee OA after topical application of either 3.5% menthol gel or an inert placebo gel. Twenty individuals with knee OA volunteered to complete 2 data collection …

Methodology Issues In Implementation Science, Robin Newhouse, Kathleen Bobay, Patricia C. Dykes, Kathleen R. Stevens, Marita Titler
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Background: Putting evidence into practice at the point of care delivery requires an understanding of implementation strategies that work, in what context and how.
Objective: To identify methodological issues in implementation science using 4 studies as cases and make recommendations for further methods development.
Research Design: Four cases are presented and methodological issues identified. For each issue raised, evidence on the state of the science is described.
Results: Issues in implementation science identified include diverse conceptual frameworks, potential weaknesses in pragmatic study designs, and the paucity of standard concepts and measurement.
Conclusions: Recommendations to advance methods in implementation include developing …

Psychometrics Of The Depressive Cognition Scale In Caregivers Of Persons With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Abir K. Bekhet, Jaclene A. Zauszniewski
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Caregivers of persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are prone to depression, and early identification of cognitive depressive symptoms is important to prevent the development of clinical depression. The Depressive Cognition Scale (DCS) can be used for early detection, but the scale's psychometrics has not been tested in caregivers of persons with ASD. In this study, 95 caregivers of persons with ASD completed the eight-item DCS and measures of caregiver burden and resourcefulness. A Cronbach's alpha of .90 indicated internal consistency. Construct validity was supported by significant correlations with caregiver burden (.59) and resourcefulness (− .57). Principal component factor analysis …

Mentoring Nursing Students In An Underserved Diverse Community, Wendover, Ut, Dr. Karen Miller
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Nursing students were required to complete 120 clinical hours in Wendover over a 4 week period. This required 4 trips to Wendover, UT and 4 overnight accommodations. The students rotated through several clinical sites including Anna Smith Elementary, Wendover High School, Toole Public Health Department and the Wendover Community Health Center. At each clinical site, students were paired with members of the community to facilitate learning. BYU students had daily contact with school nurses, teachers and administrators to assist in understanding their role and completing their assignments. At the elementary school, teachers helped BYU students to prepare and teach developmentally …

Caregiver Burden And Sibling Relationships In Families Raising Children With Disabilities, Diane W. Allred
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine sibling relationships and caregiver burden in families raising children with disabilities (CWD). In order to determine (a) are there differences in caregiver burden according to parent gender and types of disability (b) are there differences in sibling relationships according to parent gender and type of disability and (c) is there a relationship between caregiver burden and sibling relationships after controlling for CWD and sibling gender and age, and type of disability? After IRB approval, 166 families living in the west and raising typically developing children (TDC) or a CWD participated. Disabilities included …

Nursing Student Voices: Reflections On An International Service Learning Experience, Molly Kerby, Eve Main
Gender & Women's Studies Faculty Publications
For the past decade participation in service and experiential learning in higher education has increased. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of BSN and MSN students participating in a multidisciplinary service-learning course in a rural, underserved village in Belize. Researchers analyzed student journals utilizing qualitative data analysis techniques. There were eight consistent themes found in the student journals. The findings indicate that international service learning opportunities increase students' awareness of their place in a global society and the potential contribution they can make in society. For the past decade, service and experiential learning in higher …

School of Nursing & Midwifery
Background: To improve the quality of health care in remote parts of Pakistan, a research project was initiated in the mountainous region of Gilgit-Baltistan using information and communication technology to improve patient care and support continuing education of health providers (eHealth). This paper describes the experience of nurses in using eHealth in their routine practices.
Methods: All health centres of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan using eHealth as part of this study, were taken as a single case. These include four primary healthcare centres, three secondary care centres and one medical centre. In-depth interviews were conducted using semi-structured interview guide to study nurses' …

Excerpt: A recent study published in Workplace Health & Safety concluded, “Morbidity burden level is an indicator of work limitations in employees with diabetes and can be used to identify employees who may benefit from specialized services aimed at addressing their work limitations associated with diabetes” (Sylvia et al., 2012, p. 425). This conclusion is not warranted by the findings of the study because of limitations to both internal and external validity.

Taking Care Of Tootsie: Making A Place For Nurses., Jennifer L. Bellot, Mindy Owen
College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations
Theresa “Tootsie” Smoder, better known as my grandma, always seemed larger than life. She bore eight children in nine years (The “Crazy Eights”), raised them almost single-handedly when her husband died and managed a 160 acre farm. Doing whatever it took to create security and stability for her family, Tootsie worked multiple jobs to feed her brood. She was a social butterfly who always tended to others and modeled the value of caring throughout her life.

Nurses’ Perceptions Of Sustainability Of Magnet® Efforts, Heather Vartanian, Kathleen Bobay, Marianne E. Weiss
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Magnet® designation and redesignation efforts are time and resource intensive. The results of a survey of nurses’ perceptions about 4 components of sustainability indicate differences between Magnet and non-Magnet hospitals. Evaluating nurses’ perception of the sustainability of Magnet efforts will help nurse executives determine where to commit financial, time, and human resources.
